Wisconsinites -- Stand Up For Our Great Lakes!

Wisconsinites -- Stand Up For Our Great Lakes!

Target:
Representative Scott Gunderson and Senator Mark Miller

Pollution, invasive species, habitat destruction, and record low lake levels are severely threatening the Great Lakes. We can't take the security of our water and this fragile ecosystem for granted.  As the demand for water grows in other states, it is important that we support the Great Lakes Compact to protect and conserve our greatest resource. We must do this before it is too late.

The Senate passed a Compact that was delicately balanced to meet the concerns of conservationists, industry, municipalities, and developers.  Everyone compromised to create protections that we are all happy with. But things have changed.  And we need your help.

Now, builders and developers are back peddling and asking the Assembly for modifications that sacrifice responsible use of Great Lakes water.  You can help by signing the petition and adding your own reasons why you care about the Great Lakes.  You can be even more helpful by forwarding this to your family and friends who care about the Great Lakes!

We, the undersigned, are asking for your support of the Great Lakes Compact. As the demand for water grows in other states, it is important that we support this delicately negotiated initiative to protect and conserve our greatest resource. Our precious Great Lakes are in trouble. Great Lakes water plays a crucial role in our region's economy and in our daily lives whether it's the water we drink, the water that supports manufacturing and power plants, or the special times and places we enjoy with our families on the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes Compact is a balanced plan focused on protecting the Great Lakes and the Wisconsinites who depend on them.  Last-minute efforts to modify and derail this plan by a few misinformed folks place the future of our region at risk.

The time for hesitation is behind us.  Already, four of the eight Great Lakes states have officially supported this plan as well as the Wisconsin Senate. The time for responsible leadership and action is now. Our precious water resources and the future of our region are at stake. We urge you to fully support the Great Lakes Compact today.

I live in an area that is completely dependent upon the health of the waters of the Great Lakes. Without ample clean water; Door County will become an afterthought. I was astonished to find that my legislator, Gary Bies was one of the few who voted to hold up the vote on this issue. He may well pay for that decision in the coming election. We need this compact signed in it's strongest possible language to keep the waters within the basin and we need it signed ASAP.

When I was about 10 years old, I was in the Lake Michigan. I stepped on what I thought was a stone, and kept on swimming. When I was pretty far out, I kept feeling a throbbing pain where I had stepped, so I lifted my foot out of the water and found that it had been sliced open in a sort of right angle shape. The lake used to be a great place to swim and it used to be safe. Now it's so dangerous that nobody I know will go in there. Action must be taken.

Please protect our Great Lakes. I'd like to be able to tell my son that we did everything we could to keep our water here in WI and to ensure that he will be able to use and enjoy them, just as we can today.
