Governor of California

State Capital Building

Sacramento, CA 95814

RE: Assembly Bill 2064- Sponsored by Assembly Member Juan Arambula

Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,

I encourage your support of AB 2064, which would require the State Board of Education and the Curriculum Development and Supplemental Materials Commission to adopt textbooks and instructional materials to include instruction on the Vietnam War specifically the Secret War in Laos, the role of Southeast Asians in that war, and the refugee/immigrant/new American experience as a result of the war.

Throughout the United States involvement in the Vietnam War, Southeast Asians were courageous allies in the struggle against the spread of communism.  Their stories of heroism, sacrifices, and struggles need to be told as a part of the American history especially to our youth.  By supporting Assembly Bill AB 2064, we are ensuring that the Southeast Asian stories and their legacies will be remembered beyond the generations that participated in the Vietnam War.

AB 2064 will have no cost to the State because adoption will be executed during normal book adoption cycle in 2011.

I am asking for your signature Assembly Bill 2064 reaches your desk.  I also want to thank you for joining Assembly Member Arambula and I in support of this Bill.

Sincerely yours,

July 26, 2008

I think this should be added into American History because how can a significant group of people who were allied to the United States be ignored. Not only that, the genocide that is happening right now should be brought to people attention instead of fighting a war over oil in the Middle-East.

FROM MY PERSPECTIVE I THINK THAT THE HMONG PEOPLE DESERVE TO BE RECOGNIZED NOT ONLY FOR THE HARD WORK AND EFFORT THAT THEY PUT INTO THE SECRET WAR IN VIETNAM, BUT IT WILL BENEFIT AND GIVE MANY STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN WHO WE ARE AND OUR CULTURAL AND TRADITIONAL BACKGROUND. HISTORY IS SOMETHING THAT WE ALL LOOK BACK UPON TO LEARN WHAT WE CAN DO TO BETTER OUR FUTURE AS WELL AS FUTURE GENERATIONS TO COME. BY INCLUDING THE SECRET WAR INTO HISTORY TEXT BOOKS FOR ALL STUDENTS TO LEARN CAN BE A MOVING EXPERIENCE FOR MANY EVEN THOUGH EVEN THOUGH SOME STUDENTS DON'T EXPRESS THEIR FEELINGS. AMERICANS (I.E. PEOPLE OF ALL RACES AND ETHNICITY) MUST KNOW AND LEARN HOW THE HMONG PEOPLE WORKED ALONG SIDE WITH THE AMERICAN TROOPS TO FIGHT FOR PEACE AND MOST OF ALL FREEDOM.

This simple statement acknowledges the livelihood of our people and serves as inspiration for our elders, present and future generations. We are here, we exist and who we are must not be forgotten and washed away by poor politics, bureaucracy and injustice.

As a fellow Hmong, I hope that the US will remember what the Hmong have done for the CIA during the Vietnam War.

The Vietnam War was a battle that our parents and grandparents fought to help aid the Americans in hopes that the Lao government wouldn't fall into communist hands. I feel that it's important that others know of the actions and stands we took to help fight in the Vietnam War. People don't realize the commitment and aid we gave to the Americans during the SECRET WAR. Our voices aren't heard and our people are invisible to the American eyes. Why should we be seen as NOBODY when our aid to the Americans were something more valuable than nothing? Our people fought hard and many lost their loved ones. To continue in a world where our faces aren't respected is injustice. We as the new generation of Hmong students would like to be known for our families faithful aid to the Americans. We JUST want to be HEARD. This is a step to let the world know that we helped to try to make a difference.

As a mother and citizen of the United States, I would like our future children to realize the sacrifice our ancestors made for us to be able to be where we are today. Many Americans are not educated about what the Hmong people did to help out in the Vietnam War. Let our voice be heard!

the people of the usa do not know what the hmong peopel did--and what do we hear from a lot of white americans--go back to your own country!!!--how can you say that when my people--my grandfather fought and died to help the usa but never really get recognized for it??? why is it such a secret fro the world to know what the hmong did for the usa during that time--sad...americans think only of themselves...

After all of the lives the Hmong lost in the Secret War, the least that can be done is to acknowledge our contribution to America and the losses that we suffered. To not have the Hmong's participation and effort in aiding the Americans in the war in the textbooks to be taught to the American youth is an ultimate injustice. I want people who have never seen a Hmong person before to read about the Hmong in his/her American History textbook and ask who the Hmong are. And this day will not happen until we have our rightful place in American history.

It is so sad how so many people don't realize the gravity of the Vietnam War's effects on the Hmong in Laos. We need these to be taught in our schools. We can't let the efforts of an entire population be forgotten.

I think it's great that this bill has been introduced. Our youth need to know about the Vietnam War as the US played a major role there and the war still has such long reaching effects, especially for former South Vietnamese, Hmong, Laotian, etc peoples. Many "native" Californians regard these Southeast Asian immigrants unfavorably and I think it is because many do not understand them or their reasons for being here. They've sacrificed so much, I hope our state and people vote to recognize it.

THIS IS SUCH A GREAT MOVEMENT! THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT WE NEED! MANY PEOPLE ARE NOT AWARE OF OUR 'CULTURE' NOR HAVE THEY EVER HEARD OF THE "HMONG" PEOPLE. THIS BILL WILL DEFINITELY HELP PORTRAY THE FACT THAT WE DID HELP FIGHT SIDE BY SIDE WITH THE U.S IN THE SECRET WAR. LET US NOT BE FORGOTTEN FOR WHAT WE DID, BUT MAY THIS 'HISTORY' GO DOWN IN HISTORY FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION. IT'S TIME OUR VOICE BE HEARD AND IT'S TIME WE TAKE A STAND.

Not only are we unspoken of, but we are invisible to many. This bill will enable us to have pride in our invisible culture and to take pride everywhere we go. This will also teach the 21st century children what our grandfathers and our great grandfathers did. They not only risked their lives for the Americas but wanted to bring future to our culture, HMONG.

I want my children and their children, and their children's children to know their heritage and history. My generation has only been able to hear it through out parents, now it should be written. I think we deserve that such as much as the 9/11 event!

We, in the US are the voices of the untold stories and mermories of the secret war. Who must stand tall and let everyone know that the secret war was real. Many videos and voices have been head. Got to youtube.com and you will find many documenations of everything.

This is a really great idea and the 'secret war' should be known and heard of within the US. This'll also open up eyes to those who are non-Asians about the Asians' struggles and their help with the war.
