One of the 80 billboards posted in the Orlando area advertising Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights 18.

Against Halloween Horror Nights 2008 Billboards

Target:
Universal Studios and Clear Channel Outdoor
Sponsored by:
On September 4, 2008 The Orlando Sentinel posted an article about a local mother's group that is looking to have the billboards toned down.
They are not looking to have Halloween Horror Nights canceled, they have nothing against the holiday of Halloween or Universal Studios. These billboards are graphic and unnecessary.
There are 80 billboards throughout the city of Orlando and are very "in your face." This event is not intended for young children, as stated on the Halloween Horror Nights web site, yet they have no problem posting the graphic images on billboards that everyone can see.
As an adult, I can look at this image and realize that it is not real and "just for fun" yet, how do I explain this to my three year old son? Our young children should not be exposed to these images.
I agree with this issue and hope that many others out that do as well!

We the undersigned would like for Universal Studios and Clear Channel Outdoor to re-work the 80 billboards posted in the Orlando area advertising the Halloween Horror Night 18.
We would like these billboards to be suitable for person's of all ages. We feel that these images currently on the 80 billboards in the Orlando area are detrimental to young children that do not have the ability to decipher between what's real and what's pretend.
The event is stated as "Not suitable for young children" but the advertising is placed so that children of ALL ages can see them. We feel that this is extremely irresponsible.
We hope that our voices will be heard and the appropriate actions are taken. Thank you for your time and consideration.

I feel that anyone who believes in Halloween, should keep it to themselves, therefor I feel that the billboard needs to be removed... who ever believes in halloween, well they can display in there home any thing they want, but not out in public... Thats why God gets mad at us and sends natural disesters...

The billboards this year seemed to be a bit more graphic. As a first grade teacher I have seen how it has affected the students. I hear students taking about Bloody Mary and how they shouldn't look into the mirror while in the bathroom or Bloody Mary may get them.

Please have enough respect for the families of Central Florida that support Universal Parks by marketing Halloween Horror nights to adults only and not putting parents in a such a terrible position as they just try to drive around their city. Thank you

I have a 5.5 year old and a 2.5 year old and both of them have asked me about the signs. I believe that they are inappropriate for young ages and should not be placed on the Billboards. Toning them down or simply advertising without the graphic picture would be much appreciated.

Try explaing the billboards to a scared three year old...there is no reason to have young children feel frightened and experience nightmares for the sake of thrill and profit.

They have gotten too graphic!!!It is just plain EVIL!!! They don't care if they scare young children, as long as they bring in the money. KEEP IT IN PARKS!!! NOT ON BILLBOARDS, OR COMMERCIALS!!! Look at what this world has come to. SAD, JUST SAD !!!

I recently had some family down from the North East. I was ebmarrassed when the conversation in the car turned to how offensive the billbord is. By the way, these are people from NJ who, belive me, are not easily offended.

My 8 yr old son saw this billboard and got really scared. He asked me why they put something that ugly up, and asked if the people that did it forgot that children are scared of those things and that they also walk around outside. All I had to say was I don't know just don't look. I'm so glad somebody decided to do something about it. Thank you so much, and God bless.

I am a bona fide macabre/gore/blood & guts affectionado AND mother and this billboard is RIDICULOUS!! I have literally avoided driving down certain roads so my 5 and 3 year-olds won't see it. This is undoubtedly R RATED and should NOT be advertised in such a public manner!!

Please show responsible advertising. These images are disturbing, and I do not want my children exposed to them. I can't control when the commercials air, and when. Please respect our right to protect our children from these terrifying images.

The images for the 2008 Halloween Horror Nights Marketing Campaign are too graphic for the public. The frightening/startling commercial and gruesomely graphic ads are not appropriate for younger audiences. Because the images are public (billboards, commercials in early time slots, and food packaging) it's difficult to shield children from it. I don't have children and I was offended by the prolific nature of this campaign.

Your billboards are creepy and way to explicit for my eyes much less the eyes of my 4 Children. I am a anuual passholder and I love your theme parks with there adventuresome rides and awesome entertainment. The anticipation and unexpected twist and turn of what you will do next to amaze me are what keep me coming back. I dont need a billboard to draw me in and ruin the surprise. Let's leave some thing to the imagination. Your billboards create an atmosphere of evil and trepidation that are to vivid for the eyes to see. Please consider the ramifications of such brutal images on little childeren.

I couldn't agree more with this. I am an Art Director and see no need to use images that frighten young children. If these images were in a location that kids would not have to see them that would be fine. A print ad or something sent directly to adults would be fine. But as a parent of 4 children I do not like driving down I-4 with my children in the car when these signs are up. I try to distract them everytime we come upon one of these disturbing signs. I don't particularly like seeing them for myself, they bother me too, but I can get over it because I know it isn't real. Kids should not be subject to being frightened by these. I can see one day down the road someone SUING UNIVERSAL for disturbing a child's sleep pattern or just making them paranoid.

I dread passing the billboards as I take my young children to and from activities. The event's message could be conveyed in a much more appropriate manner, while respecting a family's right to travel in peace. I should also tell you that recently, one of my very young children was upsent to tears by a scary story told by another elementary school student. It took me a few minutes to put two and two together, but I then realized that the young boy had seen the Halloween Horror Nights commercial. (They start coming on pretty early in the evening, considering some children may have a late night after activities, football, etc.) These commercials are offensive as well.

We're beyond sick of the Horror Nights commercials. It is an adult night at the park and my young children should not be subjected to the commercials at all. I am so tired of the garbage my kids see from those commercials at times normal kid shows are airing. I'm done with Universal Studios. Hopefully, the economy will only continue to deprive and pull down that theme park. Good riddance to Universal and the horrible commercials it runs around Halloween! It deserves to starve and sit empty after the sick, sick, sick ads...
