Opposed to the Japantown Better Neighborhood Plan

Opposed to the Japantown Better Neighborhood Plan

Target:
All Concerned People involved with San Francisco's Japantown

The preservation and protection of San Francisco's Japantown is at stake with the Better Neighborhood Plan.

Many Japantown community "leaders" would like the San Francisco Planning Commission to endorse the Plan; however, there is a strong opposition from outspoken members of the Japantown community who are concerned that this plan will put the entire community at risk.  These concerned community members want additional time to review the Plan so they are able to input their own opinions and views.

This community will continue to be torn apart unless if the Japantown Better Neighborhood Plan is fully and mutually agreed upon by all stakeholders.

We the undersigned are concerned stakeholders of Japantown and OPPOSE any endorsement of the Japantown Better Neighborhood Draft Plan.  We request that the San Francisco Planning Commission allow the community an opportunity to better understand and address the proposed recommendations so that we can clearly address and respond to the impact on the future of Japantown.

I grew up in the community and it was a place to bond with people with my cultural background. It was a tight knit community where everyone knew each other and there was a sense of belonging and brotherhood. I feel like my childhood was enriched with all the cultural events and activities I was able to participate in.

I go visit it several times a year and am interested in what happens to that place. Would like to keep the Japanese culture alive...

Any future development of Japantown must be for the benefit of those who live and work there, and the surrounding community. All cultural aspects must be preserved. Consideration of the community must take precedent over city officials and developers.

The SF Planning Commission's hearings begin tomorrow - 6/25. From the statements in this petition, it appears that the Commission and its consultants have not fully vetted the Japantown Better Neighborhood proposal with the broader community. There are many good elements of the Plan, however, if the community has not been informed about them so that it fully understands the principles and guidelines of the Plan, then the Plan is set up for failure. Why not delay endorsement of the Plan to allow the community to fully understand and discuss the good elements as well as the controversial aspects of the Plan? It is too important to the community and to the future of one of the 3 remaining Japantown's in the US to allow otherwise. (Visit SF Planning Commission's website to get the full plan.) I am an East Bay resident who values SF Japantown as our cultural center and magnet for the JA community in the Bay Area.

Having grown up in Watertown, Massachusetts, and now attending college in Los Angeles, I have seen first hand the value of these spaces to the Japanese American community. San Francisco Japantown is a special and unique place that many other areas do not have the opportunity to replicate. SF Japantown's ability to network, amplify and nurture all members of the Japanese American community is an invaluable resource, especially in light of current global economic circumstances, and needs to be protected with maximum effort on behalf of the JA and SF populations.

This is a city I love to visit, especially the Japantown area. What would San Francisco be without the cultural attractions in Chinatown and Japantown?

any time moves are made without the best interest of the community... bad idea.

Japan Town must preserve its cultural and historic presence in San Francisco. It would be a shame for Japan Town to lose its identity to "progress".

This decision requires more time for suchh a big decision as well as a more accurate general consensus for its approval. Not just those of the "community leaders" and the board.

Unfortunately living in Southern California we only get to visit Japantown infrequently, most recently the Taisho basketball tournament. Our family enjoyed visiting Japantown and the boys mentioned that the Japantown felt culturally more enriching than 'J-Town' in Los Angeles.

There are so little places in San Francisco and other U.S. cities that are exclusively for Japanese-Americans and Japanese nationals to enjoy the culture of Japan. Please keep Japantown as is or even support and preserve it. Thank you.
