Cumberland County Animal Control does not have a breed ban in place at this time, nor is one set to go into effect on Monday, Dec. 5.
The Animal Control Board met on Oct. 3 and discussed a proposal to limit breeds put up for adoption. The Animal Control Board decided to recommend limiting the adoption of the following breeds:
- Rottweilers
- American Staffordshire Terriers
- Pit bulls
- Chows
- Presa Canarios
- Any mix of the breeds above
The policy has not been implemented at this time and has not been brought before the Board of Commissioners. The Animal Control Board will meet again Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. Any recommendation from this advisory board would need to be sent to the Commissioners’ Policy Committee and then the Board of Commissioners for approval.

We the undersigned are against the proposal to disallow adoptions of ANY specific dog breeds in Cumberland County.
With the low adoption rate, few adoption events, lack of community involvement, and minimal number of rescues involved with Cumberland County Animal Services, it seems that there are a variety of alternatives to this policy.
While we understand that there is a problem in the community with loose and aggressive dogs, which often comes from certain breeds, this issue has more to do with irresponsible owners that need to be cited or arrested rather than punishing entire breeds of dogs.
Another avenue that the county has not explored is temperament testing the dogs that are taken into Animal Services with a simple adoption rating system. Obviously, aggressive or dangerously fearful dogs cannot be adopted. This is a practice that is already in place, however, so there is no need for an additional proposal.
We appreciate your consideration of this matter. Please do not pass this proposal to ban the adoption of specific dog breeds in Cumberland County NC.
