Allow gay people to be blood donors (UK)

Allow gay people to be blood donors (UK)

Target:
NHS Blood Donor Service
Sponsored by:

The UK is currently dangerously low in its stocks of blood.
Therefore the NHS spends lots of taxpayers' money on advertising and marketing costs in order to increase donor levels. However, if the NHS changed one simple rule, they could potentially have several million extra donors eligible to give blood immediately.

How? Allow healthy gay men to give blood. The UK law is outdated, stereotypical and discriminatory towards healthy gay men. Moreover, it is risking lives - the UK urgently needs more blood.

Did you know:

A straight man who has unprotected sex with a different girl every weekend can give blood TODAY

A straight man who has had unprotected sex with several prostitutes can give blood AFTER ONE YEAR

Those who have had unprotected sex with an intravenous drug user can give blood AFTER ONE YEAR

Those who have had unprotected sex abroad in a high risk HIV country can give blood AFTER ONE YEAR

Gay men are banned FOR LIFE, even if they've only ever had sex with one partner - and even if they used protection.

You have a responsibility to influence people in health issues, your views on sexuality are so out-dated and predujice that it's disturbing to think that these views still exist within the NHS.

I think gay men should be able to give blood as straight people are just as likely to have conditions like gay men

I think its wrong that gay men are not allowed to give blood as straight people could have anything just as harmful as what gay men can have. It's purely discrimination of the word Gay!!

Hiya Luvz, After speaking to many of my gay friends I have come to the conclusion that the majority would love to be able to give blood, and offer other people a lifeline in their time of need. Many have only ever had one partner, always use protection and get tested regularly. Still theyare unable to do so. This is an outrage!!!!! The amount of dirty, disgusting slag shagging straight men and women that will have given their blood to pollute the lovely blood banks will be in the millions, when further millions of clean, respectable citizens are walking the steets unable to offer any assistance at all. ta luv, Jason

I'm surprised that no-one has changed this law, I hope they realise that more heterosexual people are infected with HIV and AIDS in the UK that homosexual people. The UK government need to wake up and see that part of the solution to more blood donors lies in direct control of themselves. Leaving this law unchanged for this long is definitely NOT in the interest of this country. The government has failed us yet again.

I absolutely believe that healthy gay men should be allowed to give blood, we are loosing lives when there is good blood out there ready and available to help others. Why?

This law needs changing. It's ridiculously outdated and based purely on prejudices that have no place in a civilised society.
