I am a mother a mother of a young child in Iowa City. I would love to keep a couple of hens to increase our sustainability and as a fun project with my son. Urban chickens are allowed in cities around the country, including New York, and it makes sense for Iowa City to follow suit.

I have raised chickens for 20 years, had 4, provided manure and a lot of joy, and of course fresh eggs. I would be glad to help others set up their coop, and advise them on care, and protection from cats and dogs, etc. Chickens are very easy to care for and are not noisy like the dogs in my neighborhood!!!

Maybe the chickens will drown out the stupid barking dogs in my neighborhood. I love fresh eggs. No roosters I hope.

I have been thinking about getting a few chickens for a few years. I recently read that Portland, OR allows this. We are turning more of our yard into vegetable gardening, in the interest of organic, local, sustainable food. Certainly the Extension Service could educate people as to 'best practices' with raising urban chickens. I am for this!

The parents and teachers at Willowwind School would like to teach our students the importance of caring for the Earth and for animals. By adding chickens to our gardening program, we can illustrate symbiotic relationships in nature. The animals help care for the garden by eating the bugs and providing fertilizer for the earth, we care for the chickens by giving them food, water and shelter, and they care for us by giving us eggs. This is an important, hands on lesson that so many urban children are missing out on. We feel it is an important addition to our curriculum. Thank you.

I don't eat chickens but I think it is ridiculous that people care if you have chickens.

Because I rent and don't imagine my landlords would allow me to keep chickens this will not benefit me personally, but I'm surprised that Iowa City doesn't already allow urban chickens when bigger cities like Madison, Portland, and Austin do.

I have raised anywhere from 2-50 chickens in my yard outside of Iowa City for years. I now live in Iowa City and would love to have two laying hens in my back yard. They are GREAT to have and provide eggs, manure, bug control, and are just fun to watch.

There are so many towns and cities across the country that have successfully incorporated hens into the their local culture. Iowa City can and should demonstrate dedication to local food and sustainability by passing this ordinance. Thank you for your careful consideration of this important issue.

IC is complaint based, so if a neighbor's chickens become a problem, they can be reported and the problem dealt with, just as we do now with dogs and cats.

I think it would be great to be able to have a small group of chickens. Many larger cities allow there residence to have chickens. Good for gardeners, produce eggs and educational for my son.

I would love to have healthy chickens who will provide me with fresh, healthy, cage free eggs. Chickens are quiet, especially when kept to such a small amount. I spent the last four years in New York and have see my fair share of chickens here, so it makes sense that they should be allowed in Iowa City! Thanks so much!

Please change the ordinance in Iowa City to allow 5 hens per backyard! I live at 435 rundell st and as part of our neighborhood history we had a hatchery. Seems like a very simple change to allow sustainable living on a very local scale. Misha Goodman seems to not think it will push humanity over the edge! Do it!
