Amazon.com should create an Alternative Literature section

Target:
www.amazon.com

Outsider Writers, and the people signing this petition, urge Amazon.com to add an %u201CAlternative%u201D literature listing under its %u201CBooks%u201D pull-down menu.  Alternative Literature needs a room of its own.  I have spent close to a year trying to get Amazon to make a decision on this issue without a response, so now it is time to see if people who buy and sell books on Amazon want to see Amazon.com have an Alternative Literature listing.

Amazon is an extremely important online sales tool for independent publishers and authors.  Bookstore shelf space is more limited than ever, and it can be impossible to find new poetry or fiction from independent publishers.  That is why independent publishers  increasingly use online sites such as Amazon.com to market their books.

There are thousands and thousands of products listed on Amazon, but Amazon has made it easy to browse through products until you find what you want.  Its site has pull down menus for main product categories.  Click on Books  and you will find extensive listings for everything from Graphic Novels to Performing Arts to SF and Fantasy.  There is even a Poetry category.  There is not such a Literature category, though.

The Amazon system works well if you want to browse through mainstream publications, or if you already know the author and/or title.  But if you are looking for Alternative you have a problem.  There is no Alternative category.  The Alternative literature is there, but it is crowded out by the mainstream books.  If you don't know exactly what Alternative writing you are looking for, you won't find it--but if you want to browse you will find plenty of pages listing books, but the Alternative writing is buried among the mainstream products.

It is time for Amazon to create an Alternative listing in its Books section, dedicated to alternative/underground poetry, fiction and prose.  Amazon can start by simply listing books from small, independent publishers, and then can create subsections under Alternative, for poetry, flash fiction, political writing, and other subgroups.  This would be great for publishers, authors, readers--and Amazon itself.

I am a 1990 Pushcart Prize-nominated author of poetry whom has also been awarded a one-thousand dollar grant by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Artist Grant Awards, 2002. I have self-published five volumes of poetry under my very own White Chocolate Books imprint. I support the importance of Amazon allowing independent authors/self-publishers the opportunity to market/sell their literature online. I think that in doing so, more of the unknown authors may come to prominence without having to compete with the larger, less than friendly, corporate venues.

Small press and independent publishers would greatly benefit from this service, and increase the availability of their works to the masses. Please consider this when discussing this petition.

Authors should have the same avenues for advertising and sales as other indie publishers--musicians or artists. It is no longer appropriate that all types of literature need to go through the same publishing channels. Traditional publishing houses should now be seen as just one option for writers. I order frequently from Amazon but I'm not able to find all the books I want when they are independently published or are published from very small publishers.

If it was not for Itunes giving inde's a chance we would have never heard great music. Great inde books deserve a chance too! Let the reader be the judge not big publishers.

simply put, diversity encourages progression, and variety needs to be provided to the masses to help them make their choices. I feel this category will achieve this.

Amazon is one of my favorite online places to buy! As a buyer, I DEMAND a section that makes it easy for me to browse titles of books by authors that may not yet be well-enough known.

Variety for writers/readers is a hard thing to come by nowadays. Commercialism is killing the literary art. Give way to more creativity.
