Amy Goodman Arrested - Stand up for Democracy!

Amy Goodman Arrested - Stand up for Democracy!

Target:
Ramsey County Sherrif Bob Fletcher, St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman, and St Paul Police Chief John M. Harrington
Sponsored by:
Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman was unlawfully arrested in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota September 1, the first day of the Republican National Convention. Goodman was arrested while attempting to free two Democracy Now! producers, Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar. Their crime? Being journalists - they were covering the street demonstrations at the Republican National Convention. Amy Goodman's crime? Questioning authority and defending her colleagues and freedom of the press. Read their first person accounts here.

Watch the video and decide for yourself - do we live in the land of the free or a police state? Are the Ramsey County police protecting the public - or protecting the RNC FROM the public? Stand up for our right to free speech and an independent, free press. Demand that police immediately drop all charges against Amy Goodman and her colleagues.

I am outraged that Ramsey County police arrested journalists Sharif Abdel Kouddous, Nicole Salazar, and Amy Goodman. I demand that all charges be dropped immediately.

Kouddous and Salazar were arrested on "suspicion of rioting" according to Sherrif Fletcher, yet they were simply doing their jobs as journalists and reporting on the street protests at the Republican National Convention. Amy Goodman, host of Democracy Now! and internationally acclaimed journalist, was simply trying to get information on her colleagues' arrest and defend their right to do their job without police persecution. She was arrested for defending the freedom of the press.

I was appalled to hear and see the events which took place outside the RNC this year. It is a terrible thing to see such censorship of the press.

That the Democratic Party (no relationship to Democracy) would use the same Orwellian strategy (Protest sites, etc.) and police tactics (one video is worth a trillion words) just shows that we are less than one party away from a one party system.

The Ramsey County Sherrif Department should be ashamed at the actions of its "peace" officers who deliberately violated the constitutional rights laid by the forefathers of this country as an exact recourse against "absolute rule." The Bill of Rights and Constitution for that matter clearly allow citizens to freely report and speak out against issues and institutions they believe are a threat to citizens' rights. I find it quite hard to believe these nationally recognized, character-tested individuals would "incite a riot" or anything violent for that matter. The violence incited was on the part of these militarized "peace" officers who blatantly took advantage of the volitile climate to act barbarically and UNPROFESSIONALLY. I hope recourse is taken and I stand in support and solidarity with Amy Goodman, Sharif Abdel-Kouddous and Nicole Salazar and all independent media across the globe who's brave and courageous work inspires us all.

This is so bad that if the world knew about this kind of protection of a political party and against a specific journaist, they would loose the respect for USA's so called democracy. WHAT MORAL RIGHT WOULD WE HAVE TO LECURE OTHER COUNTRY ABOUT FREE PRESS?

amy goodman stands for what is right in journalism. drop these ridiculous charges or admit that your citizens don't have the rights you claim they have under the constitution.

This seems more like a Totalitarian state than a Democratic one and yet professes to teach Democracy to the rest of the world. There is no place for dissent in the world's so-called greatest Democracy and people can get arrested for just doing their job? Such hypocrisy and such a shame!

These arrests were clearly illegal. Please drop the charges. There are still those of us in this country who take the Bill of Rights seriously.

This is an outrage. Journalist should cover protests. What is happening to our country? How can this happen here? The police must drop all charges against Amy Goodman and her colleagues.

The last I knew we are still a democracy where there is the freedom of the press. I want you to immediately drop the charges against Amy Goodman and to offer her and her producers an apology for the treatment they received at the hands of the police. I do not blame the police but rather the higher ups who created an atmosphere of intolerance.

Amy Goodman's arrest was criminal (as was the arrest and brutal mistreatment of other members of the media and peaceful protesters). To not drop all charges and make restitution to those unlawfully arrested and brutalized just adds to the illegality of the current administration. Those responsible at all levels of government and those who used their positions of power (i.e. those who exerted cowardly macho power by controlling others with use of weapons) deserve nothing less than prosecution and punishment to the full extent our constitution permits!!!

Are we already living under a Military State? Who are we, as Americans, living under a democracy, that our government would allow such an arrest? I heard that protesters, acting under our constitutional rights, were being arrested during the convention, which was appalling, but, to read (and not see it on major news TV stations, of course) that Amy Goodman was arrested makes me disgusted. An intelligent, pro-active, honest American citizen, actually doing a service for our country, needs to be supported not arrested!

We can see on the video that these folks were doing nothing wrong. This is not the America we had twenty years ago. Thank God, Bush is going: the worst president of this Nation!

Let her go!! Why are we arresting journalists??? This is outrageous! The system is tending to become a fascist state. Free speech is the bedrock of our system.

As far as I am concerned this is a good example of what is wrong with our country. Freddom of speech is one of our fundamental rights and it has slowly being taken away from us during this administration. We are lucky to have Amy Goodman and Democracy Now or I hate to think where we would be today!!! Stop wasting the tax payer money and use your power and energy to improve the lives of your community.

I am pretty sure that I heard Ms. Goodman is out of jail and has won her case but this is the first footage I've seen of what actually happened. I hope that what I heard is true! I'm signing anyway because you guys are pretty far from your petition goal. Apparently miss Goodman was under the impression that the Constitution holds some type of legal authority in all areas of the United States. Many of us have fallen pray to this belief--------Step out of "Free Speech Zone" and enter fascist zone. I'm sure she's fine though. Could have been worse in other places. It just makes me wonder which zone is growing faster "free speech zone" or "fascist zone".

Clearly, this is not the America we were taught about in school. This is a police state.

This is ridiculous. What has happened to our country when journalists, producers, people trying to tell the whole story are being jailed. It is actions like this that are symbolic of the decline of America. When we lose our freedoms, everything else will fail as well. All charges should be dropped and apoligies given to those affected. thanks

It's funny how the people who actually do the arresting are probably the people that progressives are fighting for the most. The brainwashed and socially deprived of any alternative voices. Just a paycheck and a badge, not much of a life in my humble opinion. I guess we need to bring to light how un fair and un balanced the military industrial complex has become. Is fascism right around the corner? The people who do the arresting need to take inventory of why and self.

Miss Amy Goodman is a legitimate journalist and deserves to be treated fairly just as any journalist would be in the land of Free Speech! What is the RNC afraid of? Drop the charges! Is this the land of the free or not?? Freedom of Speech is our most fundamental right! Let Amy do her job!

This to me is a total abuse of unlawful power. What century are we living in? Who can we turn to, when the people who are suppose to protect our legal rights and take care of us, jump into thier own conclusions as to what is right and what is wrong. Why was this not in All our TV media? What else can I say. Now that I have signed this petition, I will probably be in their Terrorist list. Patriot Act- I don't care. Go ahead and put me in your black list. Maybe I will make a difference.

Of ALL PLACES, St.Paul, Minnesota. Kent State did terrorize many and has resulted in silence for decades. Evidently this country has walked blindly into becoming a militarized police socialized government for the rich and powerful-state. Why isn't there huge outrage by all leaders in city and state ? These people deserve huge honors, not abuse. Repair the sadness and wounds suffered by Democracy.
