Ban false animal testing statements on products

In the UK there is currently no specific law regarding 'animal testing' statements on product labels.

This means that companies are free to make false or ambiguous statements regarding animal testing on their product labels.

Oftentimes, a company will state that it does not conduct animal testing. However, this can mean that they outsource to a different company to test on their behalf. Some companies will also claim that some of their products are not tested on animals. This can mean that the final product is not tested on animals but multiple items in the igredients list are. Some companies even claim to be against animal testing but directly fund it by testing their products on animals.

(Please see: http://www.uncaged.co.uk/animaltesting.htm for a brief list).

Vegans have recently received protection from discrimination by law in the same way other lifestyle choices, ethnic minorities and religions have. If vegans are now protected by law it seems to make sense that they are not influenced to buy products that conflict with their ethics.

However, this is not only for vegans. Many thousands of non-vegans are staunchly against animal testing, particularly cosmetic. It is not fair that any member of the public should be influenced to buy products under false pretences.

The aim of this petition is to have a law imposed whereby companies are not allowed to put false or ambiguous statements on their products. A law where companies can only use 'not tested on animals' statements if both the ingredients AND the final product is not tested on animals. A law where companies, as a whole, can only say they do not conduct animal testing if they themselves do not conduct animal testing AND they do not fund testing of their products via other companies and organizations.

When the petition is complete I will send it to The Office of Fair Trading (http://www.oft.gov.uk/) and local MPs.

Thanks for signing!

Dear Sirs,

We the undersigned are contacting you regarding the statements made regarding animal testing on product labels in the UK.

It recently came to my attention that there is no specific law protecting consumers against false and ambiguous statements made regarding animal testing on product labels.

Earlier this year vegans (who do not consume any animal products or products tested on animals) were granted legal protection in the same way as other lifestyle choices, religions and ethnic minorities. With this is mind it seems asinine to allow products sold in the UK to make false or ambiguous statements regarding animal testing when it conflicts with the core ethics of a vegan.

This does not only affect the vegan minority though. Thousands of non-vegans are staunchly against animal testing, particularly cosmetic. To allow a company to make false statements to influence anyone to buy their products is, in my estimation, disgusting.

My hope for this petition is to have a law implemented whereby companies can only say that they do not test on animals if they themselves do not AND do not outsource animal testing to other companies of their behalf. This should also include companies not being allowed to make such claims on products only if the ingredients of the product AND the final product itself is not tested on animals.

My sincerest thanks for taking the time to read this.

Yours hopefully,
Christopher James Bryant
