APSA Petition to Support ARAMARK Workers

APSA Petition to Support ARAMARK Workers

Target:
ARAMARK

350 food service workers at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, where part of the APSA conference will happen this year, are fighting for a contract with their employer, ARAMARK, and have asked for our support.  ARAMARK reportedly has created an atmosphere of fear and intimidation that targets union activists. The National Labor Relations Board has issued a complaint against Hynes and BCEC food provider ARAMARK for:

  • Interfering with, restraining, and coercing employees in the exercise of their rights.
  • Discriminating in regard to hiring, tenure or terms of employment of its employees, thereby discouraging membership in a labor organization
  • Failing and refusing to bargain collectively and in good faith.

Workers went on strike against ARAMARK for three days in June and have called for a boycott of ARAMARK.  We want to make it very clear to ARAMARK and its workers that many APSA members strongly support the workers' fight for a just contract and a workplace free of intimidation.  We plan to give this petition to ARAMARK and will let you know more details soon.

APSA did not sign a food service contract with Aramark.  The workers do *not* have a dispute with the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority and have not asked us to move our event from the Hynes.

As members of the American Political Science Association, an organization with conference events at the Hynes Convention Center,  we are opposed to the atmosphere of fear and intimidation that ARAMARK has created at the Hynes Convention Center and Boston Convention & Exposition Center.  We are deeply concerned about that ARAMARK has reportedly fired 3 union activists, including 2 union negotiating committee members, for their union activity, threatened to fire employees for talking about their union while at work, and spied on employees engaged in union activity.  We support the demands of ARAMARK workers for a work environment free of intimidation and a contract that provides just raises, health care, and a retirement plan comparable to those that Boston union hotels have.

Aramark should respect its workers' right to organize. As an APSA member I strongly support the workers at the Hynes Convention Center.

Aramark's refusal to respect its workers right to organize is a classic example of why Congress and the next president must enact the Employee Free Choice Act.

Aramark should treat its workers fairly and negotiate in good faith for wages, health benefits, and pensions. At a minimum, it must comply with the law. Intimidation and retaliation against union supporters cannot not be tolerated, and it's pretty disturbing to see even a very conservative NLRB recognizing problems here.

NLRB penalties are often a slap on the wrist. But I as a consumer will hurt unfair employers where it hurts the most: their pocketbooks. I support the food service workers in their dispute against ARAMARK, and will use whatever economic, political and word-of-mouth power I have to get ARAMARK to resolve the dispute in a satisfactory manner.

As a member of APSA, I am shocked and horrified to hear that the management of the Hynes Convention center will not settle on a fair and equitable contract. The management is clearly in violation with national labor laws and workers' basic human rights. Convention center workers help driver an important service for the city and organization who wish to have meetings-- please agree to bargain in good faith for a conract they deserve!

It is distressing to see a large, rich corporation like Aramark acting to deny a decent living to its hard working employees. Perhaps a boycott or campuses where Aramark has food service contracts should be the next step.

Since the days of FDR, Americans have the right to join a union. I call on Aramark to cease intimidation of workers and negotiate in good faith.

Workers' rights are human rights. Moreover, ethical companies perform well, so it makes commercial as well as human sense to respect unionized workers.
