Arizona Arabian Horse Association

Target:
AHA, horse lovers, animal rights, pets, all

This petition is for all members of the Arabian Horse Association (AHA), including but not limited to any other owners, breeders, lovers and fans of the Arabian Horse, to protest the Arabian Horse Association of Arizona and the Scottsdale All Arabian Horse Show.

In November 2006, the AHA passed what is called the "Halter Resolution," which changed the scoring system on how Arabian horses are judged and presented in a halter class.  This resolution would assist in the humane treatment of these horses, since movement would now be a criteria to be judged.  A halter horse presented at a hard stand up is sadly accomplished through cruel methods, such as beating, torture with electric shock and terrified by other means.  Not all horses are treated like this, but many are.  Even one is too many.  After a hard stand up , the horse is too stiff to move freely and cannot be judged properly.  The resolution, in theory, can eliminate the hard stand up.

The Arabian Horse Association of Arizona (AHAA) made an undisclosed remark that they would revoke their AHA membership if forced to show under the resolution, complaining about time constraints to judge each class.  In other words, they want to continue with the hard stand up and have no concern for the well being of these animals.

These means of training have been the ugly secret of the industry and it is about time we speak up.  We can make a huge difference by boycotting Scottsdale Arizona and the Scottsdale All Arabian Horse Show, held in February every year.

Please show your support and let the AHA know your feelings.

We the undersigned,

Are boycotting the Scottsdale, Arizona and the Scottsdale All Arabian Horse Show.  The AHAA's support of showing halter horses in a cruel manner does not assist in the promotion of our beloved breed and we can not toleration this type of mentality.

Please come to the rescue and be our hero by joining us in our crusade to keep the halter resolution in place and if need be, revoke the AHAA membership status.

I was not aware of the cruel torture (not training) methods used for halter classes. I find it to be completely inhumane and appauling. Domestic horses rely on people for their welfare and happiness. Cruel intentions should not be tolerated to any extent in the horse world, regardless of the breed.

I am new to the arabian show industry having recently purchased a beatiful Marwan Al Shaqab son. I just attended the US Nationals and although I believe there are things to be learned and improved upon from that show, overall, I beleive the industry is on the right track. One thing is that the scores being posted on the board got significantly behind and it was confusing and took away from enjoying the horse currently in the ring. I suggest they only show the breakdown of scores backstage in the warm up area and then distributing the score sheets (like they did) for the general public after the class. I also think they need to allow the trainer enough time to fully present the horse to the crowd. At Nationals, after a few horses, the trainers begin to take more liberty to use the entire arena which made it more fun for the crowd and allowed us to better SEE the spirit and movement of the horse. Overall, I found the new scoring system to be quite fair, transparent and easy to understand. the one other negative was that I was discouraged by the fact that some of the judges kept looking at the board which should NOT be allowed. As for my stallion, we plan to show him in Scottsdale, but I am fully prepared to bring him home to enjoy life in a pasture if necessary to protect this exceptional animal. That would be a shame as these horses should be shared with others; however, there are simply some things more important than winning and protecting the dignity and mental health of these magnificent animals that we were entrusted with is one of them. Sincerely, Lisa East

Yes, we have a stallion on lease to us who was subjected to some of these methods during his show career. He now has behavioural issues that will never completely go away. It's actually a Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, suffered by a lot of Halter Horses, especially stallions

I don't know if it would do any good.

I had no idea that this practice existed, but I am infuriated by the base inhumanity of it.

I have recently seen first hand the horrid effects of the handling practices used to produce a "hard stand-up". The persons who can inflict such torture on an innocent creature are the basest, most corrupt kind of human beings. This does not in any way reflect a celebration of the noble Arabian breed. It MUST stop. It is an ugly secret that the Arabian Horse Association cannot hope to keep for much longer.

WOW! How do such practices still exist? With so many animal rights organizations and humane societies, can they not stop such torture? Animals need to be animals and do what is natural to them, not altered by the cruel humans that inflict such atrocity! I can only pray to God to stop people from harming animals and to Karma to inflict onto others as they do to animals!

Remember sir, Karma, what goes around comes around! Animals need to be left alone to inhibit their natural gaits, behaviors, beauty, talents with humane practices. Even though animals cannot let us know they are suffering and they can tolerate pain and neglect much much better than humans can, it doesn't mean we should let it happen. In the end, God is watching and knows all who are involved in the mistreatment of animals, and all who approve to have horses suffer in order to be the best of their kind. He will judge you fairly, I am sure. Karma, just think how it would feel to have "halter resolution" become your fate...

I was shocked and disgusted to learn of such inhumanity towards a thinking feeling creature like ourselves. Why subject any creature to pain or fear when there is no long term beneficial result for it? A horse in motion, whether slow or fast, is an incredibly graceful sight. Utterly beautiful to behold. So why would anyone want to prevent this anyway?

I did not know this was common practice, but find it repellant.

I will certinly be passing on this information, and also re-thinking a planned trip to Scottsdale next February.

I ,like many other breeder's ,have been aware of it for years, but felt helpless to stop it.

.I will definitely pass this on but I'm not sure how much an individual writing a letter like this will help as I have done similar things in the past with no responses. The petition holds much more clout.
