Ask Market Basket to end sale of live lobsters!

Lobsters are remarkable, sophisticated creatures.
They take long-distance seasonal journeys, can travel more than 100 miles in a year, the equivalent of a human walking from Maine to Florida.
They help guide the youngsters across the ocean floor by holding claws, and can live to be more than 150 years old-if they survive the world's most devastating predator:humans.
Lobsters kept in tanks suffer from stress associated with confinement, low oxygen levels, overcrowding, parasites, starvation, and death.
Often, lobster tanks are filthy and overcrowded with lobsters piled on top of each other.
Shellfish often accumulate extremely high levels of toxins in their flesh (as much as 9 million times that of the water in which they live) such as PCB's, dioxins, mercury, lead and arsenic.
Ten percent of raw shellfish are infected with organisms that can cause hepatitis, salmonella poisoning, cholera, even death.
Additionally, these sea animals do not have automated nervous systems to put them into a state of shock when they are harmed.
Lobsters who are boiled alive thrash wildly and scrape the sides of the pot, trying to escape this unecessary torture.
Urge Market Basket to consider this information and adopt a policy prohibiting the sale of live animals.
There are far more customers who are saddened by the sight of lobsters in a tank than there are who would buy them, because they see they suffer immeasurably.
VICTORY!-Raley's Inc.-which owns chains Raley's, Bel Air, Nob Hill and Food Source, will never again sell live lobsters in any of it's 130 plus stores.
Nor will Safeway!
"Whole Foods announced on June 15, 2005, that it has banned the sale of live lobsters and soft-shell crabs from it's stores because of concern for the animals' welfare.
In announcing Whole Food's decision, CEO John Mackey said, "We place as much emphasis on the importance of humane treatment and quality of life for all animals as we do on the expectations for quality and flavor.""
Whole Foods, Raley's and Safeway's compassionate decisions send a strong message to Supermarkets that cruelty of this sort will not be tolerated.

Dear Arthur T. DeMoulas, President,

Lobsters are remarkable, sophisticated creatures.
They take long-distance seasonal journeys, and help guide the young lobsters across the ocean floor by holding claws!
Often, lobster tanks are filthy, with lobsters piled on top of each other.
They suffer immeasurably from stress associated with confinement, low oxygen levels, and overcrowding.
"Whole Foods announced on June 15, 2006, that it has banned the sale of live lobsters and soft shell crabs from its stores because of concern for the animals' welfare.
In announcing whole food's decision, CEO John Mackey said, "We place as much emphasis on the importance of humane treatment and quality of life for all animals as we do on the expectations for quality and flavor."
Safeway and Raley's Inc. (Raley's, Bel Air, and Nob Hill) also made this compassionate decision never again to sell live lobsters.
We the undersigned, urge you to please consider this information, and adopt a policy prohibiting the sale of live animals.
Market Basket would soar with the rating, cruelty-free!"
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter.
