ASPCA Needs to Acknowledge 3rd Most Popular Pet

Target:
ASPCA

To the ASPCA,

This is a plea to you to start promoting the adoption of the USA's 3rd most popular pet, the Psittaciformes. Your commercials are far reaching yet no mention of the thousands of homeless birds in the USA that are also awaiting in rescues for a home to love and understand them.

We are not talking about occassional surrenders, we are talking about the 3rd most popular pet whose homeless rate is the direct result of humans. Birds do not stray about and procreate but must be paired up and intentionally bred. So while the high rate of homeless birds could be governered by less breeding, the breeding community is not at all in agreement. So those of us who care about avian welfare implore you to make the general public as aware of homeless and unwanted birds as you do for dogs and cats.

1. You can cycle in your commercials of dogs and cats, pictures of macaws, cockatoos and parrots. Sarah McClachlan has never been cuddled until she has cuddled w/ a cockatoo or had a quaker purr in her ear.

2. You can help those of us concerned w/ avian welfare by disspelling the myth that all surrendered birds have "issues".

3. You can help by making a list of avian rescues available by state on your site.

We are a small group who truly care about avian welfare and we do not have the money to fight large groups such as the AFA that work tirelessly to quash the fact that the homeless Psittaciforme rate is climbing every day! However it would cost your organization very little to help educate the public. I will gladly send you photos of birds that you can use for free in your commercials and on your site, I will loan you a bird to use in a commercial.

Please we ask you to help us, help the birds by drawing public awareness to the nations 3rd most popular pet. Help us do something NOW, before the problem reaches that of dogs and cats and the birds must be euthanized. It's bad enough there are many substandard rescues out there that have 70 birds living IN their home and stacked in cages, must we wait for the birds to be euthanized before a national organization will acknowledge the issue?

Will you not help us take the nation's dirty little secrets that are often locked away in basements or closests and bring them into the light?

Even better would be a ban on breeding some parrot species, most notably the cockatoo. They are beautiful and "cuddly," but make terrible pets. They need their flock and are far too needy for anyone but the most experienced and dedicated pet "owner" to handle.

As a member of a companion bird rescue and rehome group, Mickaboo, I implore you to take heed! We are an all volunteer/donations organization that is being inundated with birds, many in deplorable health and mental well being. These delicate earthlings deserve respect and should not be bred in mills for profit.

I have nothing against cats and dogs I know they need good homes but no one mentions parrots they also need good homes and their are plenty of abused ones in parrot rescues , I feel you should add a comercial about helping parrots after all they are one of Gods creatures to but some how never get mentioned on tv I wonder why?

Parrots have the lifespan of people and are genetically wild. They are adapted for a far different life than the one the pet industry would have us believe. For that reason, they are never what people think and are given up many times in their lifetimes and there are not enough sanctuaries, rescues, or homes to handle the surplus. Please consider bringing this to the forefront before we end up euthanizing the surplus the way we do dogs and cats.

companion birds are such intelligent animals, and bring so much joy to their owners. it saddens me to no end to know that anyone can buy a bird and do so with NO understanding of bird behavior or what they require as far as time/cost/care committment. please help get the word out about our beloved avian companions who are just waiting for someone to love them and give them a forever home, because they don't understand why their people dumped them off in a rescue and need someone to advocate for them.

It is a shame that people abuse the sanctity of life to make an indecent profit off innocent parrots. They are meant to fly free and we must let them fly free. Stop this insanity. Thank you.

While I adore my rescue parrot, she is a lovely Umbrella Cockatoo and we have deeply bonded - this said I believe Parrots are wonderful wild animals and do NOT need to be breed for pets. Please help all the others that need rescued. We need homes for them that are educated and understand the commitment you need to make to them. Two of my cats came from my local ASPCA and I know what a fine job done for dogs an cats, please extend it to parrots/ birds, they are brilliant animals that deserve respect and dignity.

Parrots are becoming extinct in the wild as a result of poaching, and people who get pet parrots often find they can't care for their birds and surrender them. Parrots are very demanding, and people often don't know what they've gotten into. Parrots are not pets and belong in the wild.

There are so many displace birds with no place to go, especially with the economy downturn.
