Austin City Council -- recommit to Climate Protection

Austin City Council -- recommit to Climate Protection

Target:
City Council members and City planners, Austin, TX

(Co-sponsored by Jake Stewart, frmr manager of the Austin Climate Protection Program, and Jon Lebkowsky, WorldChanging.com)

The City of Austin makes the goal of its Climate Protection Plan clear: to "make Austin the leading city in the nation in the fight against climate change."

We have created the petition below to show our support for the Mayor, City Council, Austin Energy, Austin's city leaders, and our diverse community of multiple stakeholders, to achieve rapid implementation of affordable, world-leading, climate solutions, immediately.

We, the citizens of Austin, TX, urge members of Austin City Council to officially recommit to our City's Climate Protection Program. We feel our City can and must do more, and we stand ready to support our City's commitment to world-changing leadership.

In 2007, just two years ago, when the Austin Climate Program was adopted, more than half of today's council was not yet elected, we had a different Mayor, and a different City Manager.  We urge our City's new leadership team to recommit the City to the bold, urgent and important goals laid out in 2007.

We ask that today's City leadership put climate solutions first on their agenda and make public their commitment to finding an affordable way forward.

It is essential that Austin City Council recommit to climate protection - there are so many ways for municipalities to control the carbon footprint of the residents and businesses, and Austin needs to demonstrate responsible leadership on this topic! It is in keeping with the goals and apsirations of our citizens! Yours truly, GregW

The clock is tickin' away and there are septic areas in ATX that need clean up, and closure foor our children to live safely in Austin's future. It is about time council members move forward on becoming better stewards, thus living up to their 'talking points' made during their campaigns. Let's get with it folks. You're in a position to do this now, so let's put the quest for big money issues aside and clean up our town as a 1'st step initiative starting right now!

I believe Austin can balance its hi tech form of sustainable development with low tech. Also its smart tech with education change of behavior. Stuff

I applaud the goals and spirit of leadership expressed in the City of Austin's Climate Protection Plan. It is a worthy document to guide our investments and other decisions. The courage to live up to this commitment would be an example for the whole world. Unfortunately, the lack of courage to live up to this commitment will also speak to the world about who we are and about what we, the people of one of the more progressive cities in our country, truly value.

San Antonio took the lead this past year. Actions speak louder than words. Time to ACT! Austin Energy's Solar Rebate program was successful in driving growth in this industry until it was recently slashed. Increased funding for this program and others like it are needed.

I've always been incredibly proud of Austin's commitment towards maintaining a "Green" City. However, when so many other cities in this country are undertaking more ambitious plans to lead their citizens in the direction of a healthier, greener, more sustainable city, I can't help but wonder whether its excessive bureaucracy or pure laziness that has kept Austin from meeting or exceeding the same goals. I urge you to please reassess and reiterate the importance of committing to Climate Protection, and hope that you continue to keep Austin on the forefront of our nation's Greenest City's. My lungs and future children thank you in advance,.. Ben May

This is an urgent issue & Is among our most timely. My community is willing to sacrifice for the stability & health of future generations. Decisions in government need to reflect this shift in it's constituency's values & changing perspective of our effect on the future.

Prevention of further damage to our beautiful planet is easier than trying to fix it once it happens! There is no way to quantify the cost of losing clean air & water and our quality of life once it is gone. Investing now rather than later is smart since these new technologies can't be built overnight.

Austin Energy and Austin City Council needs to concentrate on rebates for Solar Photovoltic Installations. Instead of all the other electrical and gas companies selling their air conditions and gas heating. Their should be installing solar photovoltics for hot water systems. They don't need our city taxes going to all those manufactures. Austin's Program should be going to the people and electricians that install the Solar Photovoltics on their roofs or a windmill. This will help with Global warming and keep us out of the nuclear and coal polluting industries. The city and Austin Energy need to require that all electricians and gas installers have a mandotrorie course in installing solar photovoltic technology. They can work on a public school or building doing this. All buildings that are commercial should also be required to install solar photovoltics or not be built. Those that are being built should also be required by a mandate to improve their energy use.

Honorable Mayor and City Council, I ask you to continue to strive to be the greenest city in the country ... or the world! I encourage you to do this through a mix of supportive policies, effective leadership and programs, and action-oriented public outreach leading to robust community involvement. The City of Austin can and must continue to show leadership on the environmental and social well-being fronts, causing other cities to stand up to the challenge, thus improving all our worlds. Think global, act local... always!

Acting on Climate Change measures, making them a top priority, will CREATE employment, which will in part inspire citizens to do more toward living sustainably. Provide incentives and integrate policy to reflect the will of the Austin Communities!

Hello Mayor and Council Members, I know we can do it. Austin can roll beyond coal and phase out Fayette Coal Plant by 2020. I would be happy to help make that happen in my neighborhood where I am an elected representative to OCEAN, the Organization of Central East Austin Neighborhoods. Specifically, my association Blackshear-Prospect Hill Neighborhood Association is ready to provide a workshop for our neighbors where we can photocopy their documentation for the City's new weatherization program application. We can help them fill out the necessary paperwork, and visit with our neighbors through successful completion of their weatherization. We can quit coal by increasing energy efficiency by 1000 mw and by building industrial scale on-site solar programs. Many industry leaders will be ready to get on board. All we need is your leadership. I believe with Mayor Leffingwell's leadership and with the awesome current City Council, you can help move Austin toward our clean power, green jobs, and clean air future! Please feel free to contact me about my ideas for helping in my neighborhood with BPHNA and OCEAN. Donna Hoffman, 512-299-5776

Please understand that we the citizens of Austin support this measure and would like this reflected in our leadership as it was in the past. Let's move beyond retoric and saying that we are green, to taking steps to being green! Thank you for your time.
