Back the bid to save Guyana Rainforest

Back the bid to save Guyana Rainforest

Target:
1 million
Sponsored by:

Vast areas of rainforest in some of the world%u2019s poorest countries are disappearing, being sold off to logging contactors for cash.

At the moment, our government is looking into backing an offer by the President of Guyana to preserve the country's entire 50 million acres of rainforest in return for sustainable development funds.

A recent quote from Phil Woolas, the Environment minister reads "The UK Government sees this as a significant and welcome step. While we respect countries' sovereignty, the offer from President Jagdeo is a groundbreaker and we will be looking at it at official level to see what part Britain can play,"

Below is a link to a petition set up in order to try to get the message across that we need to preserve the vast majority of Earths depleting rainforests by providing government and private sector funding to poor countries in return for %u2018carbon credits%u2019.

Rainforests aren't just vital to the world as a storehouse of half the world's species of animals and plants (if that wasn't reason enough to save them). They're also vital in the fight against climate change. Deforestation accounts for 18% of global CO2 emissions. The Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change came up with the startling statistic that in the next four years, more C02 will be given off from deforestation than all the aeroplane flights from the Wright Brothers up to the year 2025. Keeping the rainforests standing is vital in the fight against climate change. According to the Stern Review, it's not only vital – it is also very cost effective.

Surely the trees are worth far more to this planet alive and part of a healthy rainforest than turned into lifeless wood. The President of Guyana has a great plan and deserves support from the rest of the world.

The richer countries must use their ability to help poorer countries to ensure the preservation of what is left of the earth's remaining wild places, especially those such as the rain forest in Guyana. Guyana has made the right move. We must respond positively and quickly.

This is an outstanding area of pristine rainforest containing thousands of species and locking away tons of carbon to the benefit of the whole planet. To lose any of this to logging or disturb its astonishing biodiversity in any way would be unforgiveable. President Jagdeo has taken a courageous step and I am very happy for our government to do or give whatever is necessary to enable the people of Guyana to become effectively guardians of the rainforest on behalf of us all.

This was a very interesting documentary about the rain forest and what it means to the world. Personally, I hope there would be an in depth documentary about all the species the scientists and researchers found there.

Please save the rainforests, Guyana's beauty would not be same if there was no rainforest and the world would be sorely impacted by the absence of the forest

Having seen the recent BBC series Land of the Jaguar I believe it would be a grave mistake not to accept the offer from the President of Guyana to maintain this rainforest for future generations and the health of the planet.
