Ban duck shooting in Victoria, Australia

BOYCOTT VICTORIA AS A HOLIDAY DESTINATION

The Victorian state government in Australia still permits the shooting of native waterbirds purely for recreational purposes despite the fact that most Victorians are opposed to this activity (according to a 2007 Roy Morgan poll, over 75%).

Recreational duck shooting was banned in Western Australia in 1990, New South Wales in 1995 and Queensland in 2005.  For many years, the RSPCA and the government's own Victorian Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (AWAC) have stated that duck shooting should be banned in Victoria because of the high levels of cruelty.

A US ballistics expert has shown that at least one in four birds shot are wounded.  When discharged, shotguns scatter approximately 200 pellets.  Wounded birds have legs shot off, wings shattered, bills blown away, or shot lodged in eyes, body organs, nerves and tendons.  These birds are not retrieved and will suffer a slow and painful death.

Every weekend of the 2011 3-month Victorian recreational duck shooting season, Coalition Against Duck Shooting volunteers patrolled a few of the 20,000 wetlands where duck shooting can take place. Rescued wounded birds received veterinary treatment, and of the 630 birds found shot and illegally left on the wetlands, 75 were protected species including owls, spoonbills, parrots, magpies, swans and even cygnets, etc, as well as rare and threatened Freckled and Blue-billed ducks.

Please let the Victorian Premier, Mr Ted Baillieu, know that whether you live in Victoria or another Australian state or overseas, you will boycott Victoria as a holiday destination and instead visit WA, NSW or Queensland where recreational duck shooting has been banned.

Dear Mr Baillieu,

We the undersigned are calling upon you to ban the recreational shooting of native waterbirds in Victoria.

For many years the RSPCA and your government's own Victorian Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (AWAC) have called for duck shooting to be banned in Victoria because of the high levels of cruelty.

Until duck shooting is banned, I will be boycotting Victoria as a holiday destination and instead will be spending my dollars in the progressive states of Western Australia, New South Wales and Queensland, which have banned this barbaric activity.

Please ban duck shooting now.
