Ban Fireworks in South Africa

Target:
Minister of Safety and Security - South Africa

Beauty without Cruelty and the undersigned would like to see a change to the Explosives Act banning all use of fireworks, all fireworks displays and the sales of fireworks due to the danger posed to both animals and humans.

Dogs, cats, and other companion animals don't understand the terrifying, loud bangs. Fireworks bring confusion, anxiety, fear, and blind panic to animals who, in an effort to escape the frightening detonations, can get into all sorts of trouble.

Dogs have responded to fireworks explosions by breaking through windows and are taken to shelters / care facilities with paws bloodied from running or torn skin from tearing through back yards, fences and shrubbery. Some are crippled or killed by cars.  Guide dogs can be so terrorized by the explosions that they suffer severe emotional distress and are unable to assist their companions. After a loud bang, most birds fly away in fright, and nesting mothers of flocks sometimes cannot find their own nests upon return, endangering the well-being of nestlings.

Fireworks produce light, noise and air pollution. The explosions of fireworks also release poisonous chemicals and particle-laden smoke, which contaminate the environment. Wildlife living downwind from fireworks displays are exposed to the hazards of these contaminants, as are domesticated animals and humans with asthma.

Children have also suffered due to injuries caused by the indiscrimate selling and use of fireworks and people not adhering to rules and regulations.

We all therefore strongly urge the Minister of Safety and Security to take all of this into consideration and for the safety of our children, our four legged companions and our wildlife to BAN fireworks once and for all in South Africa.

I have hated nothing more in my life than fireworks. It kills me to see my 3 Jackrussels suffer as a result of inconsiderate people setting of fireworks. Sometimes I feel like taking my gun and firing a shot at these idiots to see how they feel.

Fireworks cause more damage and pain than they do glee .. BAN FIREWORKS FOREVER ..

In this case there are two victims, the animals that were traumatized by the idiots lighting the fireworks and the idiots that got traumatized by the owners of the animals that were traumatized. Had the idiots not lit the fireworks they could have avoided being administered a severe beating.

Last year for Diwali our indian neighbours were so insenstive to our request not to ignite fireworks and as a result of their fireworks display one of our cats went missing for a few days. This saturday he plans to hold another fireworks display. Surely it cannot be allowed in a cluster complex? How can I prevent him from scarying the precious animals in our complex away? not to mention the fantastic birdlife we have.

And if the animals don't mean a thing to you, please consider the children who get hurt every year. Consider those who cannot speak for themselves, "Until he extends his circle of compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace"- Albert Schweitzer

Please ban this activity and importation of any fireworks. The deaths and trauma to thousands of domestic animals is not worth it.

I agree -- fireworks are not responsible if they cause animals this much trauma. Let's rather not!

pLEASE MAY WE BAN FIREWORKS. They hurt and do much damage to many, to humans and animals. They are very expensive and the money could be used in better ways. Seconds of colour light and horrible noises that only do damage. People should not burn their money like this, especially in our country where our money could do alot better than be blown up! It is wasteful, its also dangerous for all concearned. It is a selfish disregard for the world when we think it is fun to make loud bans and whistling noises. Plse do not allow it, just if they have to be ..atleast at a chosen collective venue. The skies should not be lite up and banging with nowhere for the animals and birds to go. Why do we have to make it seem like a war zone to have fun????? Plse help to stop it.

Lets protect those who cant speak for themselves and would like to live in peace. the animals cant understand whats going on and it scare the living daylights out of them. its so selfish of human beings to let animals suffer unnecesarily! why dont we take these humans (demons) and let suicide bombers kill themselves next to them?

In Indiana, our fireworks laws are a bad joke--but I'm not ready to go to the extreme of putting a total ban on them. Why not have the explosive, powerful ones limited to professional shows scheduled in appropriate places at appropriate times? I'm concerned about the ones I've been hearing about that catch people's homes on fire. Even if they were silent and absolutely beautiful, if they can set a house on fire, they're being launched in the wrong place. If there were ever an occasion for noisy fireworks being set off in a neighborhood, let it be for a limited time of the year such as right around when the new year comes in and three or four hours on the Fourth of July. Even that shouldn't be necessary when you realize that not all pet-owners can afford to board their pets, give them sedatives, etc. Why not shooter sites for those who want to make a little noise? In short, what's wrong with limiting neighborhood fireworks shows to those sparkling beauties that stay contained within a small area and won't end up on somebody's roof unless thrown there--and, if thrown there, it's willful vandalism! If you were surrounded with enough land, you might be somebody who could even launch some of the consumer shells. But these flying biggies don't belong in populated areas. Just use common sense!
