I have been away from the dressage world for some years, but I know from years of riding and studying it, you cannot force submission to the bit and achieve the relaxed frame that is the ideal in dressage. The practice of rollkur is as barbaric and uncalled for as the tortures inflicted on western pleasure horses to achieve the "peanut roller" head carriage. These are merely short cuts taken to shorten the time it takes to train a true dressage horse. I urge you to ban its use at all FEI events.

The practice of rollkur is an expedience to benefit short term goals. It has no benefit to the horse, its long term health and well being, and ultimately to the use of correct dressage in training the horse, regardless of discipline. I urge you to ban its practice at competitions and heavily penalize its manifestations in the ring - ie tenseness, stress, anxiety, unbalanced movement, etc.

An unfortunately limited study on Rollkur by Dr Ute Von Borstel indicated that 14 of the 15 horses tested showed signs of discomfort when ridden in constant hyperflexion (Rollkur). Unfortunaterly this study and another testing fear (by HR measurments which may not be entirely reliable alone)are the only current facts we have to go on. To make a significant change in the number of trainers using this technique faultless studies must be carried out to scientifically prove discomfort, pain -(this will be rather difficult to assess) - or learnt helplessness (see Hall, 2007 on Learnt helplessness). Once such studies are completed some progress may be made. In addition, all the time there is no overall governing body in equestrianism or assesment of owners/trainers it will continue to be difficult to monitor the ongoing of such schooling.

It's about time that the beautiful and elegant sight of a balanced and comfortable dressage became the norm again. The whole point of dressage is that we are taking the natural paces and actions of the equine, and perfecting them in harmony with the rider. Even my children's ponies happily piaffe in the field with their friends, funnily enough I've never seen them attach their chin to their chest or shoulder and trot around like that... can't imagine why!

Rodeo is slowly being drawn out of the "Dark Ages", reckon dressage is next ...

Please ban rollkur. This practice undermines the fundamentals of dressage by encouraging hand riding and is the antithesis of collection. It is also inhumane to subject horses to hyperflexion for long periods of time. It's time to take a stand and ban rollkur!

Please end this inhumane treatment of horses. Great training results are acheived through time and patience only. Shortcuts should not be rewarded by judges.

If the FEI doesn't do something about this inhumane technique; if all the organizations don't stand up to the money and the power behind this ruthless, cruel treatment of horses, then we are all going to be facing PETA and other animal rights organizations when they get wind of what actually goes on in the horse world. What an absolute disgrace; I'm sure Podhajsky and all the classical masters are rolling in their graves.

I am finally, after many years of taking care of others, living my dream of becoming a good rider. I love dressage, BUT, (listen up FEI, USDF and any other organizations that govern the dressage world) I do NOT want to compete or go to competitions, join or even be a member of organizations that allow this abuse to not only continue but reward it by giving good scores to those who use these shortcut, abusive training/riding methods. I'll speak with my pocketbook and see who listens.

Try treating a horse like a horse, and not with your twisted idea of 'elegance'. You wouldn't know civilised behaviour if you fell over it.
