Tasers encourage police misconduct and police brutality. Putting a moratorium on taser use by the police is an effective first step toward reclaiming our civil rights as a citizen in a free society.

Outlaw Law Enforcement Use of Tasers

Target:
Every government in which a taser is used by law enforcement.
Sponsored by:
If you think law enforcement use of tasers isn't a problem, you have not been paying attention.

This petition was created by Digits (http://digits.newsvine.com) if you would like to drop by and see the latest taser articles she's found. She also writes on unrelated subjects but enjoys promoting awareness of taserings as well as other human rights issues.

Please visit http://taserwatch.newsvine.com which is a repository of information, articles, and videos on real live taser incidents. Incidents, most would agree, should have never happened. People have died due to taser use, been damaged due to taser use, and law enforcement accountability is nowhere to be found.

One could argue that perhaps police need "better instruction" on when using a taser is a feasible endeavor but we disagree. At the heart of the matter belies people who think that by donning a uniform you must do what he says or else.

The Civil Rights Movement could never have happened in 2008 due to this new widespread taser use. If you have read the news accounts or stories you will see that even acts of "going too slow" have incited police to taser the citizen; Much less could an act of passive resistance be sustained without being tasered.

In short, although police will maintain that taser use is a better alternative to using guns, we ask you to ponder these real stories of taser use.

  • Would the police really have shot the man they found asleep on his own couch in his own home?
  • Would they have really shot the 17 year girl who was in her own room?
  • How about the guy they found distraught in a Canadian airport? [Rest in Peace Robert Dziekanski]
  • Or the [black] diabetic man they found passed out in his car due to a seizure?
  • Or the [black] man who didn't pull out his license fast enough?
  • Or the woman who was already handcuffed?
  • Or the man at the Kerry speech [aka "the "Don't tase me bro!" guy]
  • Or the kid who forgot his ID in the school library?
  • Or the [black] man on the phone outside an establishment who was tasered for seemingly just being black. This abusive officer had waited until his comrades had walked ahead before doing a "walk by" tasering of this citizen.
  • Or the man who was tasered for filming a warrantless police search?

Would the police *really* have shot these people with their guns? Are any of us stupid enough to believe this?

Or, is it more likely that they want complete submission? Or because they are psychologically imbalanced? Or are human and subject to the same emotions, fear, or prejudices non-police humans are subject to? Or, as heinous as this sounds, they get their kicks?

The police have overstepped. It is time the citizens speak up.

As a governing body of our free society we, the undersigned, have an important request: Outlaw taser use by law enforcement!

We did not sign up to be citizens of a police-state and yet this is what is becoming of us. The people meant to uphold our laws and constitution are harming and killing the very citizens who believed we were living in a free and just society.

Read just some of the taser abuse incidents by law enforcement and ask yourself if one incident is enough. We, the undersigned, think that one incident of a non-threatening citizen tasering is too many.

Although police will use the justification for arming themselves with tasers that taser use is a better alternative to firing their guns, we ask you to ponder these real stories of taser use.

  • Would the police really have shot the man they found asleep on his own couch in his own home?
  • Would they have really shot the 17 year girl who was in her own room?
  • How about the guy they found distraught in a Canadian airport? [Rest in Peace Robert Dziekanski]

  • Or the man who was tasered for filming a warrantless police search?
These, and others found at TaserWatch are just the ones we and the traditional media know about. How about the many taser abuses that happen that we never get wind of? Many of the undersigned know people who have been abused by the police in some fashion - taserings included - that have been too scared to speak out.

That some police taserings result in death is a simple outrage and we do not think that *that* is a "necessary casualty" as we are not in a warring society. Or are we?

The Civil Rights Movement was a movement that invoked passive resistance. If that same resistance were to be employed in 2008 or for years to come until there is a moratorium on taser use by law enforcement, we wonder how many citizens would get tasered for doing so. And further, how many deaths of these same people, would it take?

Please use the power that you have to initiate a moratorium on taser use  by law enforcement.

Thank you for your time and attention to this impendingly grave situation.

This is getting out of hand. At least when a gun is used the incident is given the proper respect (and hopefully investigated).

Frequent irresponsible use warrants the remove of tasers. Just because most officers are responsible with use of tasers; it cannot negate the fact that tasers have been abused by law enforcement.

A few years back, there was a situation where I was being targeted by the police, for a better word (guilty by association) I had lived in this town for better part of 15 years, drank with a judge first name basis with the chief of police,I have had a few traffic incedents but other than that I got along with the cops,at least I thought. On one occation they seen me driving my truck, I'm bad, I had driven home with cops following me ,I get out and see saposed friends with guns drawn, the stop was a suspected DUI, new I would never submit to any of their tests so I was Tassedand slamed to the ground, breaking teeth.I refused treatment and lawyer'd up but they still did a illegal blood draw,in any event I feel that they could have done a pepper spay instead, but then they wouldn't have gotten the illegal blood draw to use as evidance,I have watched the dash cam DVD and it apears as thou the cops are standing over me like I was some kind of trophy! I was knocked out for better part of ten minutes what if I had a bad heart? killed for a truck and a traffic stop

the taser has become a weapon that is to easily turned to, it has been used on children, pregnant women, seniors, and in a disgusting case, an infant. police look for any exuse to use this weapon.

This seems to be a weapon of choice,of out of control law enforcement. I was in Winchester,Kentucky, had commited no crime.I was asked to get out of my vehicle, parked at a gas station, when I didn't just step to it,and jump out,he stuck the taser right about 6 inches from my face and said,"do you want me to tase you?" After that experience,I relized this is not a tool that I what in the hands of officers, who already think they have total authority and don't have to follow the bill of rights or even human rights of an individual.

Since Canadians now know after the Braidwood inquiry (phase 1) that the 'gadget' is unsafe, especially taking into consideration that 2 RCMP officers altered the scientific reports on the device, civilians have no reason to blindly believe in the propoganda of governments, the Taser manufacturer, or the anti-civilian forces who use them. There is no tolerance or place for a device that through electrocution, is likely to cause a serious fatal injury, half the time or more. The device should be banned and recalled as a hazardous product.

The RCMP have clearly abused this weapon and are using it inappropriately and unnecessarily. As Citizen's of this country we have rights to be treated fairly and justly. Justice is not what we are seeing with the use of these. We are electrically charged, aside from the obvious deaths that have occurred which were an outrage, you have no clue what damage these do to a persons brain. The law enforcement officers need to have this removed and learn to speak first.

It is obvious to me that the implimentation of the use of Tazers on human beings is not only physically dangerous but psychologicly diabolical as well. It is extremely clear that there is a message communicated to societies when tazers are introduced that people are no different from farm animals. The Tazers must be either reclassified as a deadly weapon which use of is universally understood as application of deadly force with intent to kill (same as a firearm) or abolished completely. The current arrangement where the Tazer is used for persuasion, discipline, herding etc. is on par with cruel and inhuman punishment and torture and must be stopped immediately. Furthermore it is also completely unacceptable for some Police forces to lower the standard for physical and mental fitness requirements of their officers to include women and lightweights who cannot handle aggresive situations and therefore become scared and pull out their firearms and start killing people in situations where they get in over their head or feel threatened by 135 pound citizens.

No.

It is clear that TASER use was first initiated in order to assist police officers to disable people who are overly agressive. Unfortunately, it is clear that police officers have lost control in too many instances, and aren't able to properly judge when a TASER should, or should not, be used. While law enforcement officers are people whom we would like to regard with esteem, as more and more unreasonable TASER abuse stories come to light it seems that their morality is coming into question, and people are beginning to lose trust, and faith, in police practices.

No, but it is clear that taser use is an act of terrorism, even without having first-hand (or even second-hand) experience with taser abuse.

I believe that it is wrong for a police officer to make the decision to taser or pepper spray someone.I think that since it has become the norm officers do it for reasons that is unnesseary.Often times they have become lazy to use there officer training and instead choose to taser someone just because they don't want to mess up there uniforn or wrestle with someone.I think it makes them lazy, they are trained to resolve situations and to subdue but often times they choose to taser someone or use there pepper spray.tasers are dangerous ,there is no way a police officer can know that an individual health wise can even withstand a taser attack from an officer.Police train with these tasers but for six seconds not 30 seconds or a repeated attack like they do the public for sustained amount of time.

After all of the newspaper articles and news reports regarding the tasering of private citizens I have come to the conclusion that "Serve and Protect" are no longer the bywords of law enforcement but rather "Control by Force". I believe that Tasers should be treated the same as a handgun and should only be on-holstered when and if the officers own life is threatened. The most recent death locally was of a young man who weiged 135 lbs. and supposedly hit one of the two officers responding to the 911 call. Neither of the officers were in any danger from this young man and yet they tasered him 4 times and caused his death.

This past week a young man about 30, approximately 5 foot 6 and about 135 pounds was tasered 4 times by the police. His father had called 911 because the young man had fallen through a first floor picture window and asked for assistance and an ambulance. The 2 officers responding were both considerably taller and ought weighed him. It is alleged that he struck one of the officers and the taser was used to subdue him. It hardly seems necessary given the fact that he was injured from the fall and acting together the 2 could have physically restrained him. He died at the scene. Some one explain to me, or the man's father how this can happen. The protect and serve part of the oath seems irrelevant to many of our police. I can not imagine what inspires the indiscriminate use of tasers for relatively unthreatening situations.? There was a time when an officer made me feel secure. Now I fear any kind of encounter, even one as minor as a traffic stop. Something is definitely wrong here and needs to change.

Just recently a young man in our area was killed by police to tasered him. They blamed his death on drug usage, but they used unnecessary force and tasered him multiple times - far too much electricity in his body for him to survive. The police are supposed to protect, defend and serve. What part of that includes uncalled for violence and scare tactics? If you're in the police force to throw your weight around you need to find a new position. We have some of the highest crime rates in the world and our police have way more power than in other places. The crime rate in London is much lower then ours and they don't even care guns! Enough is enough.

This issue, as in any issue of what kind of force police can/should/would use on people is paramont to the relationship our policemen and women should have with the american people and everyone. We understand the issue that it can be used as a deterent in cases in which the officers are threatened and could be harmed, but it is all too obvious that it is being used indiscriminately in so many ways that it is hard to list all of them. If a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty, then this is misuse of the law as they are considering themselves judges and the jury and also torturers and as we are seeing...even killers. Until all police persons can prove they have had proper training and proper 'respect' and can follow rules set down for proper use, then they should be banned. They are using these tasers as weapons, and as torture instruments.....lets try it out on them and see how they like it!
# 403:
7:42 pm PST, Nov 18, Matthew Redding, Oregon
Law Enforcement doesn't seem to understand that tasers can kill. They should be used in the same circumstances that a gun with bullets would be used. However, their perception is that tasers leave no harmful effect, which is FALSE.

Taser use is responsible for over a death a week in 2009. It is clearly a lethal weapon, that has been used against children as young as six, pregnant women, elderly persons, a man holding an infant. Police are abusing their power, and torturing and killing people with this deadly weapon. In effect, they are becoming vigilantes, meting out their deadly "justice" before the victims have even clearly been charged with a crime, let alone convicted.
