Ban the Retail Sale of Dogs and Cats in Naperville

This petition is to support the proposition of a local ordinance that would ban the retail sale of dogs and cats in Naperville, Illinois.
Unfortunately, the majority of dogs and cats that are sold in pet stores come from what people have termed puppy mills. Puppy mills are large scale breeding facilities that pump out as many animals as possible with little consideration to the welfare of both the puppies/kittens and the parents of these animals. These animals are often crowded into tiny cages, not provided with proper food and water, denied veterinary care, un-socialized, and tend to be inbred causing many health and behavioral problems. It is estimated that 2-4 million dogs are born in puppy mills each year.

This ordinance would also strongly encourage pet stores to work with local humane societies and rescue organizations to work towards adopting out homeless pets. Pet overpopulation is a huge problem all throughout the United States. It is estimated that 3-4 million dogs and cats are euthanized by shelters each year in the United States because there simply is not enough space for all of these animals.

There are many cities that have already taken the next step towards combating puppy mills and decreasing animal overpopulation by banning the retail sale of dogs and cats. Among these cities includes...
Austin, TX
West Hollywood, CA
South Lake Tahoe, CA
Albuquerque, NM

Urge Naperville to be one of the next cities to ban the retail sale of dogs and cats.
