The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is considering imposing a ban on all through truck traffic on Catharpin Road. This road, in its present configuration and engineering profile, is a dangerous roadway for trucks and is an enormous safety hazard for drivers on the road even without large trucks.

We the undersigned strongly support the ban on thru truck traffic on Catharpin Road in Gainesville, Virginia. The road, as it is currently engineered, is a safety hazard for every driver and any truck on Catharpin Road increases the safety risk for drivers.

Fully support the ban of large and heavy trucks on Catharpin. First and foremost Catharpin Rd was not designed to be a large and heavy truck expressway. If you take the time to drive this road, you will discover the road is narrow, only near Heathcote and the middle school is there a a shoulder, consistently 1 to 3 foot drop off along the road on either side, with many tight and ill designed turns. Not to mention the many blind spots. Even cautious school buses have to slow down on many of the turns, and many times they’re over the mid line to navigate the road. Also, observing large and heavy truck drivers conduct on Catharpin, 234, and Gum Springs further convinces me they do not need to be on Catharpin Rd. They seem to be always to be in a hurry and impatient, in other word taking many unnecessary risks. Need to mention a few observations of large and heavy trucks on Catharpin: speeding, over correcting on turns, and using more than their side of the road. There are specific roads in the area designed to handle large and heavy truck traffic: 234, 29 and 15. Allowing large and heavy truck on this road is just asking for accidents of the worst kind.

The fact that these truck drivers cannot manage to stay on their own side of the road is an obvious indication that these roads are just not suitable for them. Please - ban them from Catharpin.

Please ban all truck traffic on Catharpin Road. I personally have been almost run off the road by large trucks more than once. For some reason they go too fast and then cross the lines in the road into oncoming traffic when there's a curve in the road. It's very, very dangerous. Thank you.

I just moved to the Oak Valley community in Gainesville last year. I love it here except when I have to venture out of my neighborhood to take my 2 year old son to pre-school. I am terrified to turn out of my neighborhood onto Catharpin Rd due to the trucks speeding up and down the road all day long. It is a two lane road and most of the time the trucks are driving right toward me over the yellow lines! There are nothing but family communities up and down Catharpin Rd. No retail or businesses - just houses and lots of children. There is no reason that our lives should be jeorpardized daily simply so that the trucks can take a shorter route! It is a two lane rural road - not a highway!!! Please, please, please ban trucks on Catharpin Road!!!!

Catharpin is a small 2 way road with winding curves. There are accidents on it with normal sized vehicles, it would become even more dangerous with large trucks. Also, of the 3 roads that cut thru to 29 from 234, Pageland, Featherbed and Catharpin, Catharpin is the only one with a school. We do not need large trucks whizzing by our school. Again, too dangerous!

Please ban these trucks -- not just for the safety of the children in Oak Valley, but the hundreds of children who ride the buses for Bull Run Middle and Mountain View Elementary School each and every day! The trucks drive too fast on this narrow, curvy road and have forced many drivers into the ditch (there is no shoulder to speak of). Because of their size, it will be very difficult for a bus to avoid a possibly lethal collision with these trucks. We shouldn't wait until a major accident occurs to remedy this problem. Thank you.

Catharpin Rd. should definitely be banned to thru truck traffic. In the past there have been several "truck" accidents where these trucks have actually turned over because of speed and careless driving. Please protect our homeowners and children from the dangerous situations they are creating by using Catharpin Rd. as a thoroughfare.

Catharpin road is a dated and dangerous road and should not be open to commercial vehicle traffic . There are many blind intersections and dangerous twists to the road. The line of sight is limited throughout the road. Exposing the residence to a potential disaster would be irresponsible and negligent.

I think this is a very serious issue. The truck traffic on Catharpin Rd with its narrow lanes, no road edge, and dangerous curves increases the danger to all travelers. The trucks do not follow the speed limit and are always over the center line. I have been forced onto the edge of my lane several times to keep from being hit. We do not feel that this should be allowed! We have a quite residential neighborhood with lots of young children. We feel this will increase more dangerous enviorment , the noise will be disruptive to the area and trash will increase it always does when more people can just pass through. I have personally had a number of close-calls because of trucks taking up too much of the road on the curves of Catharpin Road. This road is definitely too narrow and curvy for through trucks.

I have seen accidents on this road and have also seen both safe and unsafe driving on it. It certainly is a winding road with very steep drop offs that would only take an error of a few inches to send a truck careening into a ditch and or into another oncoming car as a drive tried to correct. There are many sharp turns and hidden entrances along with steep embankments making this road unsafe for larger trucks, especially when they exceed the speed limit, as they often do. Most importantly there is a Middle school on Catharpin Road with many children traveling by bus and sharing this road with trucks.

My teenage son is currently learning to drive and faces the hazards of truck traffic on Catharpin Road all the time. I routinely obey the speed limit of 40 mph and am teaching my young driver to do the same; however, we constantly encounter other drivers barreling down this winding road at much higher rates of speed. Many of the offenders are truck traffic speeding through our 99% residential area. It is a tragedy waiting to happen. Please impose this through truck ban on Catharpin Road!
