Ban Triclosan in consumer products

Triclosan is an ingredient in many consumer products from soaps to toothpaste and dish detergents,  as well as some articles of clothing, toys and cutting boards.Triclosan is toxic and is known to break down to chloroform and other chlorinated hydrocarbons with contact to water,  and also converts to dioxin in sunlight.  This means that not only are you killing beneficial bacteria on your skin that help keep the bad bacteria at bay,  when the soap you use gets into the environment it converts to dioxin,  which is similar to agent orange used in vietnam.  We need the government to stop the use of this chemical in products.  Triclosan is known to disrupt thyroid hormones,  which may explain why so many people now have hypothyroidism.  Please tell the FDA we do not need this chemical in our products.
Many of the deadly bacteria we are concerned about now are attributed to overuse and misuse of antibiotics,  but it may well be due to overcleanliness.  the bacteria on our skin help to protect us and if one strain gets an upper hand then we get serious skin infections.  Studies have shown that plain soap and water is just as effective as antibacterial soap at taking care of hand hygene.  Another study showed that 75 percent of participants in a study over the age of 5 had triclosan in their urine,  this is significant.  We are slowly poisoning our children and ourselves.
As a nurse I am very concerned about our health and environment, but think we have gone overboard with sanitation and we are killing ourselves with cleanliness.  In the operating room, sterility is important,  but in our homes we are actually more immune to the bacteria,  and the bacteria on our skin protects us and may actually help keep things like asthma and allergies at bay.  Let us stop poisoning ourselves by banning this deadly product from the things we use everyday.
The european countries have banned or restricted the use of this material, perhaps we should pay attention.
We the undersigned want you to consider stopping the use of Triclosan in consumer products such as soaps, detergents, toothpaste, children's products and clothing.  By allowing this product to be used you are promoting the proliferation of bacteria that are harmfull while killing the beneficial bacteria on our bodies.
Triclosan is known to cause thyroid problems,  it converts to chloroform and dioxin type chemicals and can definitely harm the environment.  Having used
Dial soap for many years I have come to believe it may be responsible for my own thyroid problems.  We are overcleaning our bodies and killing our natural defense against bad bacteria.  This chemical has no place in our products and should be limited only to healthcare organizatons (though better options do exist).
