Tell eBay: Ban All Ivory Sales

Tell eBay: Ban All Ivory Sales

Target:
John Donohoe, President and CEO, eBay Inc.
The United States is the second largest consumer of illegal ivory products in the world, according to a recent study. Internet sales of ivory have increased significantly in recent years, and the numerous loopholes in US law make it virtually impossible to prevent illegal internet trade in ivory.

Now, the International Fund for Animal Welfare has documented that one year after eBay implemented restrictions on ivory sales, eBay ivory auction sales have skyrocketed in the United States. Despite eBay's earnest efforts to regulate such sales, it is clear that there is no way for online auction sites to police internet ivory sales.

Poaching of elephants in Africa is on the rise as is illegal trade in ivory, fueled in large part by demand in China and the U.S. As the largest online auction company in the world, eBay must show leadership and do the right thing for elephants by banning all ivory sales across all of its auction sites.

Dear Mr. Donahoe,

As a conservationist and animal welfare advocate, I am writing to urge you to ban all ivory sales on eBay%u2019s auction sites across all of your affiliates in every country of business.

Recent studies show that the US is the second largest consumer of illegal ivory in the world. There are numerous loopholes in US law that allow illegal ivory to be imported into the US, and most ivory sales in the US now take place online.

In addition, elephant poaching is on the rise in Africa, fueled by increasing demand for ivory in China and the US. Study after study suggests that it is virtually impossible to adequately police online sales of ivory given the ease of passing off illegal ivory as %u201Cantique%u201D and of importing illegal African ivory as legal trophies.

I urge you to ban all sales of ivory on all eBay auction sites. I hope that your action in this regard will show leadership in the online auction industry and lead to an industry wide ban on ivory sales. Only by shutting down the online black market can we address the continued illegal killing of our majestic and endangered elephants.

Sincerely,

As the world's premier online auctioneer, eBay has a responsibility to set standards. Banning all ivory sales on eBay will make it that much harder for poachers and dealers to unload their wares; please do the right thing.

Reluctantly, I must admit that the impossibility of policing the ivory auctions on EBay is fuelling the demand for ivory. Given this information, the only responsible choice for EBay is to shut down all auction sites which deal in ivory sales.

Ivory comes from very limited mammal resources which are never used for food. The waste of LIFE for no other reason than aristocratic trinketry is a barbarous black mark on 21st century mankind's ideology. If the world and life manages to make it past all the ecological disasters the last 60 years of technological advances have brouht us: Do you want to be archived by historians as the generations that NEARLY brought ALL life to an end; and hunted the largest mammals in recorded history into extinction; for nothing more than money prestige?

The number of Elephants in the wild both in Africa and Asia is diminishing at a rapid rate. The poachers who destroy these majestic animals are ignorant to the fact of what they are destroying. A matriarchal society whereby if the matriarch of a family is killed for her ivory, means that the rest of the herd wanders aimlessly searching for food and water as there may not be a female in the heard who knows their migratory routes. This one death could and has destroyed an entire herd. Food and water is so scarce now that these majestic animals are dying from starvation. PLEASE!! Stop this horrific act of illegally buying and selling ivory in the U.S. and please support the African countries who through game wardens are trying very hard to save the babies of the adults who are killed. These babies, once released back into the wild may trust humans and also be killed. ENOUGH of man's destruction of wildlife for selfish monetary means.

eBay is always been my trusted shopping site, but I cannot believe that eBay can act so irresponsible and sell ivory? We all know that Elephant is an endangered animal and needs our immediate attention. eBay needs to act responsible and STOP selling a precious animals existence. It’s important that we save them and for that we all need to join hands to save this mighty animal or it will remain as a fairytale creature for out coming generation.

Ebay is already a bazaar of stolen and banned items. It doesn't know how to monitor itself. I'm still asking you to ban the sale of ivory; banning such a sale, in fact any merchant refusing to sell ivory, will save countless animals from merciless fates. Please ban the sale of ivory!
