Ban Plastic Bags in Toronto

Ban Plastic Bags in Toronto

Target:
A petition to ban plastic bags in Toronto
Sponsored by:
Students at the York School have taken several initiatives this year to reduce our footprints on the planet. They feel that people in Toronto can make a difference by tackling the issue of plastic bags.

Plastic bags take 1000 years to break down, release hazardous chemicals into the environment and are a danger to animals that confuse them for food. Over a year ago, San Francisco passed a ban on petroleum-based plastic bags in supermarkets and chain drug stores  These stores are now required to use either compostable bags, made from corn starch or other natural sources, recyclable paper bags, made from post-consumer materials, or sell reusable cloth bags. Quebec's provincial government is also exploring a new tax to target the extravagant use of plastic shopping bags.

We believe that Toronto has ability to take the same measures that other cities and countries have taken to keep plastic bags out of our environment.

We are trying to collect 1000 signatures so we can present our case at City Hall. Please sign below if you agree with us. Thanks for your contribution on making Toronto a greener city :))

This can be easily done. We pretend we are better than the US when it comes to the environmnent and this has already been done there. We need to lead environmental changes not resist.

Plastic is a waste of valuable oil resources and it is disheartnening to see the volumes of waste disposed on our streets, parks and landfills. A tragedy with can be resolved through turning over to more renewable methods of carrying our purchased goods. Please accept my petition for banning plastic bags in the beautiful city of Toronto-keep it sparkling!

Instead of giving $0.05 rebates off for using a cloth bag (as many retailers are now doing), retailers should be encouraged to start charging their customers for plastic bag use.

Please take this initiative seriously. It is a shame that Toronto has not led the country in banning plastic bags, but by taking action now we can truly make a difference.

I think if everyone in this country would visit landfill sites they would realize what a scourge plastic bags are.
