Dear Sacramento Policy Maker,
We the undersigned wish to ban plastic grocery bags in the City of Sacramento. Plastic bags fill our landfills, endanger wildlife, and increase our dependance on foriegn oil. Americans consume over 380 billion plastic bags per year, of which only 1% are recycled. These bags are petroleum based, using over 400,000 gallons of crude oil to produce 100 million plastic bags. Plastic bags do not biodegrade, they photodegrade (breaking down into small toxic particles). These particles contaminate our soil and waterways. As Sacramento strives to be among the most livable cities in the United States, this ban is an essential step. Let's join San Francisco, California, Suffolk County, New York, Annapolis, Maryland and others and ban the bag. Thanks for your support in this. We share the desire to make Sacramento a truly sustainable city!

I use my own cloth bags. They're more comfortable to carry and they hold more than plastic bags.

There is no reason for plastic bags...there are too many alternatives. The problem is felt all over the world, finding them in every eco-system, harming-polluting-killing the environment.

I use my own cloth grocery bags.

They are terrible for the environment

I already use reusable bags

Plastic bags are wasteful, ending up in a landfill for generations.

I already do!

Plastic bags contribute to waste, are made from non-renewable resources and have a negative impact on wildlife and waterways. There are many other options available to people who need bags to carry items in and plastic bags should not be one of those options. Sacramento, as the State Capitol should be setting an example for other cities to follow and show it's commitment to reducing waste and embracing a sustainability.

Yes, I already do.

On top of the fact that they are produced using fossil fuels and contribute greatly to non-biodegradable waste, according to marine biologists, sea turtles mistake floating plastic bags for their favorite food, jellyfish. Once ingested, the plastic bags block the turtles' GI tract and lead to starvation.

I bring my own cloth bags to the store.

Plastic bags are wasteful, harmful to the environment, and contribute to the incredible amount of garbage that gets fed into landfills every year. There is no reason for them, other than people being too lazy or forgetful to bring their own bags.

I have been toting my own bags to every store for several years now.

Because plastic NEVER decomposes and will be on this earth forever!

I always bring my reusable bags to the grocery store!

You wouldn't use all those plastic bags at the grocery store if you were paying for them. In Germany people carry their own bags because the plastic bags available to them at the grocery stores are expensive.

I've been using my own cloth bags for more than 20 years. For every bag I use I get a 5 cent discount on my bill. I say no to bags everywhere I go. If you drive a car to run errands, you don't really need bags (except for groceries).

Plastic bags do not decompose, they fill up landfills and are just bad for the environment....

I already use my own bags.

Plastic bags are creating havoc in our ocean habitat. Plastic bags are requiring too much space in our scarce landfill space.

We almost always use cloth bags. If plastic wasn't available, we'd make double sure to have our bags with us when we went grocery shopping.

Plastic is bad for the environment. It gets into the ocean, rivers, bushes, ground, animals and air. It never goes away. Plastic breaks down into bite-size pieces for animals of every size to ingest. It stays in the ecosystem for ever. Birds in the open ocean and who nest on remote islands mistake plastic bits for food and starve en masse.

I already bring my own cotton string bags and totebags with me to the store

We do not need more plastsic waste filling our landfills. We need to educate the community on the importance of thinking long term; we can no longer justify convenience for the sake of our community. For our health and safety, we need to adjust attitudes and resources for a better lifestyle. Prioritizing begins in the home - we no longer need to use plastic bags.

Of course.

If people would be diligent in recycling the plastic bags, they wouldn't be so bad. But the bags will continue to be a problem in the land fills and rivers and lakes because people aren't responsible yet.

Yes, I am more than willing to bring my own cloth bags to the grocery store.

Really there are better ways already that take the place of plastic bags, So a ban on plastic grocery bags is a do able goal

Currently, I bring canvas bags to the grocery store that are washable, It's a habit and I do not miss plastic bags.

Plastic bags are a hazard to the environment in every form - wildlife, pollution, etc. Waterways are choked with them. There are plenty of alternatives. Ban them or charge a considerable price to buy them.

I already bring my own reuseable bag - most of the time.

# 153:
1:53 pm PST, Jan 19, Eric Duggan, California
Because they are an environmental menace and there are many alternatives. It simply takes a behavior modification on the part of the shopper

Yes, I'm already using alternatives
