Ban Plastic Bags in Edmonton

Ban Plastic Bags in Edmonton

Target:
Edmonton's Mayor, Stephen Mandel
Sponsored by:
We are asking Edmonton's Mayor, Stephen Mandel  to ban plastic bags in Edmonton by September 2009.

Each year, an estimated 1 trillion single-use plastic bags are consumed worldwide. Currently, 97% of these bags end up in either a landfill or littering our planet's fragile eco-systems. - chicobag.com

The world's largest landfill can be found floating between Hawaii and San Francisco. Wind and sea currents carry marine debris from all over the world to what is now known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. This landfill is estimated to be twice the size of Texas and thousands of pounds of our discarded trash, mostly plastics. Each year hundreds of thousands of sea birds and marine life die from digested plastics mistaken for food. -LA Times

Set a good example by saying no to single use bags when you're at the store. Avoiding plastic bags is the simplest way we can reduce oil consumption, preserve our environment our and childrens future.

Sign this petition today to ban plastic bags in Edmonton and help lead us towards a green, sustainable future.

There are substitutes for plastic bags, even for people like us who have dogs. If plastic bags are banned, it will be an encouragement for companies to make non-plastic bags. I'm old enough to remember waxed paper bags. Go ahead and do it - it will be an important but almost painless decision that goes a long way to protecting our environment.

Even though i do not live in Edmonton, I have many friends that live in Edmonton whose environment would benefit from this greatly. As well, if Edmonton enforces this policy, it may cause Calgary to enforce it as well, starting to make Canada a healthier place for our wild life.

With the power of the almighty, i command this to stop! Plastic bags cause a disconvenience not only to the environment, but also to us...who likes to carry groceries and have those cheap bags break on you? who likes to have plastic bags all over your backyard

In Soviet Russia, plastic bag bans you! But seriously, folks, it's all about those cloth bags that you can reuse over and over again - plastic bags are absolute crap.

Without a ban, most people will rely on the convenience of whatever their purchases are put in. This is most often plastic bags. You no doubt know the downsides of plastic bags. With a ban, consumers AND retailers will be forced to come up with alternatives.

Please eliminate the plastic bag pollution from Edmonton. We should play our part in the eventual worldwide ban of plastic bag use and pollution. Look at all the other progressive and modern cities and countries who have allready done so. Edmonton should get with the program.
