Speak up and make BARC of Houston a No Kill shelter- Let's get them cleaned up and organized...These animals need our voices to speak for them!! Be a part of change- Save a life!

Clean up BARC of Houston! Organize them and make it a NO Kill Shelter

Target:
Mayor Bill White, City of Houston, TX
Sponsored by:

It is no secret that BARC of Houston is a HIGH KILL shelter and has a really bad reputation of being dirty with poor sanitary conditions for these animals who are transported there on a daily basis. I have experienced it first hand on several occasions and it is just ridiculous how unorganized it is and how the place is runs daily.

There are different sections of BARC which people are allowed to visit when adopting a needy animal. Each area seems to have their own ways in which they operate and for an individual who only wants to help an animal and save a life, it is very discouraging to see that these different entities will not work very well with each other. In the South Wing, the communication, as well as the friendliness is much different (better) than the rest of BARC. The volunteers work very hard in the South section and do their very best. Experiences for the rest of BARC have been very poor and makes one feel as if they are just another City/Gov. employee just receiving a paycheck! Attitudes at BARC are not what they should be when lives are at steak. This place is very unorganized to the point where it makes you want to say "forget it" and just go someplace else. Friendly is Not what they practice there at all. It is discouraging to think these poor animal's lives are left in the hands of people who act with such disregard.
The cleanliness at BARC is by far in poor shape and the smell is ungodly. Patrons are not allowed to view animals which are kept in the "death chamber" (is what they call it) even though they might be good adoption animals. Might I remind you I have visited this place several times. The BARC facility is by far one which makes a person sad for the animals just by walking in the front door. It is a very sad place to visit- there is nothing that describes cheerful there at all!
What we all agree is that something should be done about this quickly and to make this a "No-Kill" Shelter for animals. As our city grows, our shelters grow also and if this was a NO-KILL shelter then these animals at BARC would have a much greater chance at being saved by someone like myself who wants to make a difference in a K-9 or Feline life!
Its bad enough that the volunteers work so very hard in all area shelters and rescues that unfriendly personalities and disorganized work ethics can increase the chances that these animal who are picked up daily on the streets by BARC will have a very unlikely chance to continue their life. There are many loving families in Houston and surrounding areas which foster and adopt animals every single day.
One more experience to make you aware of: There are supposed to be a holding period/time frame in which BARC is supposed to hold the animal before it is allowed to be considered adoptable or even fostered. They (BARC) do not follow this rule. I really do my homework first on an animal I wish to adopt before driving such a far distance not to mention fighting Houston traffic. On occasion I have shown up to adopt a particular animal which is adoptable and it had disappeared prior to the holding period time had ended. The animals had been taken home by an employee. (which I will not name) The employee is considered a foster for the establishment and not only does she take home some animals before the holding time is up- but months went by and I was never contacted about the adoptive animal which I was interested in. (My contact information was forwarded to her) What the heck is going on there? This is another example of how unorganized it really is. This "employee/foster" runs the show at BARC how she wants to with disregard of the rules that should be followed at BARC and not to mention with attitude to fellow employees. This is just one more discouraging thing that one encounters when trying to adopt and save a life there at BARC of Houston. It is terrible that things like this are allowed to take place.

The animals here are truly in need of our help and support-

I believe this can all be changed with your voice!

Dearest Mayor, Mr. Bill White,

It is in the interest of the animals that we all agree that BARC of Houston needs help in making it a better place. The BARC facility is by far one which makes a person sad for the animals just by walking in the front door. It is a very sad place to visit- there is nothing that describes cheerful there at all!

This city owned shelter is not a place where people can go and feel like they are truly making a difference by adopting just one animal. This High-Kill shelter is in need of great attention and soon.

"We the people" suggest several things that would be helpful in finding homes for these needy animals. (1) BARC should be cleaned up and considered more sanitary for the animal residents residing in their care.
(2) We are asking that you make BARC of Houston a NO-KILL shelter especially for the reason that they are a very busy shelter and fast paced with the euthanasia of animals. More population means more homeless pets and also means more pet adoptions!
(3) BARC should be organized and maintained in such a fashion that adoptions run more smoothly instead of finding out that animals do not exist there that should be. There are incidents in which the wrong animals have been taken from the facility and in which wrong animals have been put down. There are Houston citizens which have shown up for or called about their animal and it was no longer existing due to disorganization.

*I am one to do my own homework first before pointing a finger to say shame-shame.

*Speaking out for Houston animals- "We the people" challenge you to under cover, secret video taped visits to BARC so you can see what we see.
WE ARE EXCITED IN ASKING FOR YOUR HELP!
-Organization- means more adoption
-Friendly- means more adoption
-Clean- means more adoption
-Growing city- means more adoption
-No-Kill- means more lives saved
-No-Kill- means Houston cares

*One last thing to add: If having a NO KILL shelter is a matter of having more man power, well The City of Houston has plenty of probationers who can step in to this shelter and lend a helping hand. These court appointed community service hours can be utilized with our animals in need at BARC and any other shelters in Houston. Probationers should be serving the city to make it a better place- So what a great way to help make it better...by helping animals in need!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read the petition that we all believe in. It is something that is very important to all of us and others who did not get the opportunity to sign. We hope you will see that there are many more supporters than just Kent Robertson (Previous Director of BARC) in making this a No-Kill shelter and a better place for homeless animals.  WE DO CARE!

These animals deserve a second chance. Many of these animals end up in the shelter due to humans. It is not fair that these wonderful creatures have to die because of human stupidity! Please give them a second chance.

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” -- Mahatma Gandhi. The US is supposed to be the greatest nation in the world. Why can't we get this right?

Animals are just as important as people and need to be taken care. Cleanliness and a comfortable environment is a priority when an animal is transported to a shelter. Not only will the shelter be more appealing but will give the animals a better chance of getting adopted and not put asleep.

It is amazing to me that in 2009 BARC cannot get it together. Many big city shelters are saving most of their animals. This is completely unexcuseable. Why doesn't someone recommend that they at least put their dogs on the Dogs In Danger website?

I lost my cat a month ago and have been to this place twice. It is underfunded, unsanitary, and downright depressing. The local government needs to fund this place because the conditions are animal abuse.

I have visited this facility twice in the last month and it is absolutely depressing how these animals are being treated. It has been weighing on my heart and I feel I need to say something and try to figure out a way to help. As soon as you walk in this place you hear the agonizing moans of all the animals in their cages/jail cells. If you compare this facility to the SPCA OR The Humane Society of Houston there is no comparison. The enviroments are completely different. You definitely get a feeling of walking in an animal death row at the city pound. These animals DO NOT deserve this kind of treatment.

This is so hard to understand. A city as fine as Houston has this kind of lack of leadership. It is time to make something happen for the good of the taxpayer and his pets.

It's hard to feel 'proud to be a Houstonian' after learning what's going on behind closed doors at BARC. I pay my "mandatory" fee to BARC every year to register both of my cats with the city (which I ADOPTED from a Houston NO KILL sanctuary) and I am horrified to learn that my money could be going towards killing healthy, adoptable, innocent animals. Make BARC No Kill NOW.

I cannot beleive you people. GROWN-UPS too. You are supposed to be role models for me I never thought doing this to animals giving 5-days for survival was a good thing YOU KNOW SOME PEOPLE HAVE LIVES AND DON'T COME EVERY SINGLE DAY YOU KNOW THAT!!!! obviously not....

BARC does not have the right to treat animals this way. It is just purely cruel!

Animals are just like people, but in different forms. They have feelings, even though it might not look it. To neglect an animal or leave it in filthy condition and not to mention euthanizing it after only giving it a 5-day chance is just a cruel and unusual punishment.

No animal, feral or not, should be killed because of bad human habits that do not involve neutering/spaying. We all have equal rights to be on this earth and nothing gives us humans the right to kill.
