Tar sands above, Forest below.

Alberta Oil Industry Destroying World's Largest Biome

Target:
Ed Stelmach
Sponsored by:
The oil industry in northern Alberta, Canada has been described as the most destructive project on the planet. The volume of oil produced in these tar sands is second only to Saudi Arabia.

These projects are destroying a southern edge of the world's largest biome, the taiga, a forest stretching across Alaska, Canada, Sweden, Finland, inland Norway, Siberia, Northern Minnesota, Upstate New York, New Hampshire, Maine, northern Kazakhstan and Japan.

It is doing this at an accelerating rate.

Consider that Alberta alone accounts for approximately one-third of Canada's total emissions and Canada ranks among the top producers of emissions on the planet, placing 7th out of 207 countries for carbon dioxide emissions and 12th out of 185 countries for greenhouse gases.

Furthermore, the situation involves the Albertan and Canadian government's complete disregard of UN Human Rights Committee (UNHRC) rulings as well as rulings made by  the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and the Special Rapporteur for Housing concerning a land rights settlement with the northern Alberta based First Nation, the Lubicon.

Dear Ed Stelmach,

We the undersigned, as planetary citizens, are calling for nothing less than the complete cessation of oil sands projects in northern Alberta, a complete restoration of the afflicted environment and an engagement with sustainable and renewable energy sources.

Ed Stelmach, you have repeatedly stated that you will %u201Cnot touch the brakes%u201D concerning the oil industry in Alberta. Let it be known that the rest of the world is in that vehicle with you and we will not join you on this suicidal path towards extinction.

Continued engagement with and promotion of these oil sands projects puts at risk the lives of over 6 billion people as well as innumerable forms of organic life and diversity. The oil sands projects are responsible for nothing less than accelerating the demise of the entire human species.

Albertan and Canadian governments have repeatedly ignored UN Human Rights Commission rulings in regards to Lubicon Traditional Territory. Not only is the oil industry in Alberta a bane to the existence of life on this planet, it is also an internationally recognized Human Rights issue.

This position and lack of action on the part of the Alberta and Canadian governments very seriously mauls the reputation of Canada as a peacekeeping nation.

Rather, it clearly shows that Albertan and Canadian governments have little respect for the planet or for the people living upon it and with it.

Shortsightedness of any degree can no longer be accepted. This is a matter of global concern far beyond the economies or energy needs of any single province or nation.

What you are doing is depriving the world of oxygen and therefore participating in a slow genocide of the entire human species and of all life on Earth.

Please, slam on the brakes. Please, ask yourself if you want to be responsible for a grey, toxic and suffocating future devoid of life or if you want to play a role in developing a green, healthy and exciting future full of life.

Join us in building a better world.

# 3,241: 12:59 pm PDT, Jun 25, Name not displayed, Australia Gas prices in my area are $1.71 a litre about $6 a gallon. Costs about 100 plus to fill a 60 litre tank. LPG or propane about $45 and can get about 220 miles out of it or about 300-320 kilometres. The real issue you should be protesting here is the fact that our governments know of a real solution to all of our energy needs including air travel, our cars, trucks, electricity supply and the answer to global warming. The answer is further research into Stan Meyers work who was poisoned in a resturant for his effort in 1998. He found a way to split water into its individual components Hydrogen and oxygen which is an explosive mixture and powerful enough to run any engine. Our governments know of this technology and are hiding it from us. In fact this technology has been around for approximately 100 years and a percentage of those who invented it were disspelled. Did you know that a deisel can be run on vegetable oil new or used. Rudolph Diesel invented the diesel engine to run on peanut oil and mysteriously drowned in the English channel while on a boat trip to present his project.

The Oil Sands Project in Northern Canada is completely unsustainable. It is ignoring the warnings of the world's scientist, the IPCC, that warn humanity will soon suffer an economic and ecological crisis if much is not done now to break our dependence on fossil fuels. The Oil Sands will provide short-term economic wealth for this generation while compromising the very survivability for future generations and many other species. What total madness. We must shut down the Oil Sands now and choose sustainable energy alternatives. Matt Lowe Nelson, BC

Please STOP all further gas and oil exploration and slow down on production. we need to put all effort into renewable, sustainable energies (electicity, hydrogen and ?????). No more bio fuels (food first!!!!!). Canada needs to take a leading role in global solutions to green house emmissions now, without further delay. Enough profit and destruction. Enact positve, sustainable goals now, while we still have have (ever so little) time left. Make our grandchildren proud of us! Cindy King

There is no question that Oil is a valuable resource. The current rate of development reveals a clear lack of respect for this value, and an arrogance of leadership steeped in the sin of Greed.

Ethics and business mix like oil and water in a tailing pond. We can't rely on businesses and govenment to make ethical choices, it's up to us to demand them as consumers and voters, with every choice we make.

As a resident and concerned citizen of Alberta I am appalled at the lack of governance and control being placed on projects such as these. This is truly the last frontier for oil and for life on earth. These efforts in the oil sands speak clearly of the goals of our governments and corporations. I understand that our ever growing species has more energy needs than ever and that as a government it is your responsibility to do your best to provide for our needs. You may believe that raping our country of its natural resources is going to be of benefit, maybe in the short term it will but in the long run the damage caused will be far greater than the benefit gained. Harness the Sun!!! The greatest energy producing entity in our solar system. Unlimited, clean and free; sounds like a winning solution for everyone.

It is disgraceful that there are no checks or balances in place to protect the fragile ecosystem in Alberta's northern region. The fact that Canada is the number seven emitter of greenhouse gases is due in no small measure to the deplorable lack of responsibility and arrogance that the Albertan government displays.

The Canadian government is astonishingly shortsighted in its view of its own well-being and economic future, as well as that of the whole planet, in supporting this path of destruction. Out beyond the narrow reality tunnel that is oil, there are vast options, many that will equally support the economy. I urge you to wake up to the future. You have the power to heal the province and access economic strength through other means. Please look to the future.

It is time for us all to wake up . . . and grow up. Such heedless destruction affects all six and a half billion of us. Mr. Stelmach probably doesn't believe in karma, but in his next life he may well have to come back as a First Nation member.

Having seen first hand the destruction of mining operations, in many formerly pristine states in this country, and being an Environmental Scientist with a great love of the natural beautiful ecosystems on this planet, I was appalled to learn that Canada is no better enlightened than the US. Like the rainforests of South America, the Taiga is a unique ecosystem that provides a ballast for the entire planet...simple life-sustaining mechanisms such as water and oxygen. Instead of continuing to destroy this environment, why not spend your dollars researching and developing alternative energy sources?

The process used to separate oil from soil is toxic and wasteful. Economic growth seems dependent upon environmental death. I'm not surprised that this story has not been reported in the US media. We need to turn our attention toward Traditional Native Cultures to gain wisdom about how to survive and thrive without destroying the natural world that all are dependent upon.

As a life-long Alaskan of 57 years I do not want to see a trans Alaska-Canada gas line built solely to pollute the North in the extraction of oil from the Tar Sands. I am currently writing and blogging to that effect. There will be plenty of collective shame to go around the North, both sides of the border, if we allow this madness to proceed.

Ed Stelmach, I feel that your government is toying with the future of our health, economy, and planet as a whole, and it's wrong that your decisions are motivated by the almighty $. Why do you disregard the future implications of raping this province? Look beyond the narrow reality tunnel that is oil, and you'll see that our options are vast. I feel the corporate grip that the world has around the throats of our people, and unless something is done, that grip will tighten and eventually take everything we hold so dear about this beautiful province. Please do not remain blind to the future. Economic strength can be achieved through other means, you just have to be creative. I am a young man of 22. If you think that I'm out of line, you're somewhat right. I'm basking in the pool of wealth your government has created, and I'll tell you firsthand, this wealth makes us oblivious to reality. The human race of centuries to come will be the ones to suffer, and if your government continues this path of destruction, you can bet that your name will appear in my descendants history books as being a player in the destruction of planet earth and the health of its people. My point is: You have the power to heal our province. Please, please remove yourself from the billion dollar frenzy for a moment, and look to the future.

It is a deep-seated concern of the citizens of this planet to witness many organizations in ideal financial positions to re-allocate resources for the continued development of sustainable technologies, continue to mine the earth for finite resources as if they were in inexhaustible supply. Many people are slowly waking up to the realization that our ways and methods of supporting ourselves, in economies and technologies based on infinite growth, wil probably not last another half century before we tip the environmental balance out of our own control. Please look in your hearts and feel the interconnectivity to those around you, as well as the ground underneath and the skies above. Large and small, individual and communal efforts are required from our species if we are to face the challenges of altering our collective relationship to this planet, our only home. Any government or industry looking for success in the coming generations would be wise to invest their interests in the myriad green innovations spurting up all over the world. Instead of relying on an ever-diminishing toxic fuel for the future, imagine your country leading the world in new discoveries that provide the world with a fresh, balanced paradigm for living in an environment of perpetual sustainability.
