Every year at least 10,000 greyhounds retire from racing in the UK> Many of these simply 'disappear'.

Racing greyhounds may face a number of welfare issues during their lives including:-

* Overbreeding leading to thousands of unwanted dogs being killed.
* Injuries caused by inappropriate track surface and design.
* Being abandoned and killed when they don't make the grade.

When they retire greyhounds meet one of 9 fates, 6 of which are totally unacceptable.

Abandoned and end up being taken to the local pound.
Abandoned and die.
Abandoned and then found by a member of the public and kept as a pet.
Abandoned and found by a rescue organisation and rehomed.
Killed by their owner.
Euthanased by a vet.

The acceptable alternatives to this are:-

Kept by their owner as a pet.
Rehomed to a good home by their owner.
Handed to a rescue organisation and then rehomed.

We want independent tracks to be licensed by local authorities and for them to be responsible for their greyhounds and lurchers even after retirement by ensuring that their dogs are either kept as pets or rehomed adequately.

We the undersigned urge you to introduce a new law to protect racing greyhounds and lurchers. Every year at least 10,000 greyhounds are retired from racing with the fate of many of these unknown.

If you do not kill men why would you kill animals? Dogs? Don't you see that at the end there is no difference? An animal is not a subject, it is a living being. Do not misuse, harm, exploit and torture animals, in this specific case greyhounds. grant them a life in dignity and treat them with respect.

I've just got a retired racing greyhound a month ago. He cames from Ireland. He is 4 years old and he runs 91 racings comp�titions. He was rescued by a french rescue association "l�vriers en d�tresse". In my home I have two other dogs an this greyhound is a georgous and a great companion for them and for us. How many of these lovely dogs will be killed by the dirty syndicates of racing ? Please try to do something to give them a better life !

i have 3 retired racing greyhounds as personal pets, and they are the best dogs i have ever owned, and i also have a chihuahua and none of my greys have ever wanted or caused that little 6lb baby harm. they are gentle in nature, they are beautiful and i enjoy my dogs, please let this breed be adopted to others that love and want them also for pets after racing...greyhounds are not a commodity, they are living creatures and could live really great lives after the race is over.
