All too often on the news you hear about another young girl delivering a baby and then killing it. While that is a terrible tragedy in itself, the bigger problem is that many of these pregnancies could have been prevented if only schools provided better sexual education. Too many school districts around the country still have abstinence-only education programs. Young girls and boys aroundt the country need to know about protection, about where to seek medical advice in the event of an unplanned pregnancy, and options after there is a pregnancy ranging from adoption to abortion. States all over the country have "Safe Places". So many people don't even know what a safe place is. It is supposed to be a place where a child can be left, no questions asked. The safe place then contacts child protective services, and the child is placed in foster care. People will say, "But information like that will promote promiscuity." Isn't that a risk we are willing to take to protect an infant's life?

This is a topic that is very near to my heart. I am in the health care field and I do not understand why we as americans think that sex education promotes promescuity. It sickens me that parents wont get their daughters a shot that could prevent them from getting HPV just because it has to do with sexual activity. HPV causes cervical cancer if we could protect women from getting such things just think of the impact it would have on us all. I'm sure each and every one of you can think of just one person who's life has either indirectly or directly been affected by cervical cancer. Just think of lives that could be saved.

Teen sex is a fact of life. They will always make their own choices about what to do with their bodies. We should at least make these choices INFORMED and give them the correct information about what can happen and how best to protect themselves. Abstinence is noble, but it has been shown that when that's all they're given they're still going to have sex. It's time we educate them with real information, real facts, and do not discriminate based on their sexual orientation. Being a teen is hard enough!

As a high school health educator, I have a first-hand view of the impact that a comprehensive sex education program has on teenagers. Fortunately, I teach in a state where there in not an abstinence only program. Because of this, I am able to provide students with valuable information to decrease unwanted pregnancy.
Many parents and lawmakers believe that if students are provided with information about contraceptives, they will be more likely to have sex. That is not true. Research shows that just because children are knowledgable about contraception does not mean that they will be more likely to participate in sexual activity.
According to the CDC, 757,000 teenage girls become pregnant each year, with 82% being unintended. If information about various methods of contraception, as well as abstinence education, is implemented, I believe this number could be extremely lower. Sex education is not about encouraging students to have sex, but rather providing them with accurate information and allowing them to use their knowledge to make healthy decisions.
For this reason, I believe all states should mandate that students be taught about abstinence, but should also be given information to aid them should they choose not to remain abstinent.

Abstince only has proven not to work. That just drove the teens to do something that they were told not to do. Wake up Washington D.C. and provide a better sex education program in our public schools. We must cut the number of teen pregnancies in this country. It is out of control..

There are far too many unwanted children as a result of young people having sexual relations before they know all the facts. Having children is a life changing event.

I agree so much. I see babies having babies all the time now. Moving in anything they can, because they can not afford it. The killing of these babies are becoming an every day thing. I hear it all the time. We have so much wrapped up in sex these days. When I watch commerials, there is sex in almost 50% of the time. Why does a chocklate bar have something to do with sex. These poor children are being brought up with everything that has to do with sex. They almost have know other way. We need a proffesional in each school to educate them on sex. Not just one class. Many class's. I do not even see family planning anymore. I agree so much.

I agree that sex education is horrible the way it is now or the way it was when I was in school. I had sex education in school at age 11, 13 & 15 & I didn't learn hardly a thing. It was a joke, I'm sorry to say it. It amazes me at all the teenagers out there who know next to nothing about sexual matters, yet they are out there having sex!!
