Bike Accomodations for Grand Parkway

Target:
Harris County Tollroad Authority
"We, the undersigned, are in favor of improving pedestrian & bicycle access to the future Grand Parkway segments, specifically:

1. Pedestrian crosswalks and signals at every signalized intersection along the access roads

2. Removal of barriers - Full ADA compliance for all paths. Every bridge that goes in as part of the access roads also has an ADA-compliant path alongside traffic lanes, so that bridges do not become barriers

3. Wide, bi-directional, paved multi-use paths (8 ft wide) for pedestrians, future transit users, runners, children, the elderly, beginner bicyclists, roller-bladers, and wheelchair users, on both sides of the Grand Parkway access road

4. Designated bike lanes, shoulders, or wide outside lanes greater than 14 feet wide on the Grand Parkway access road, which will improve safety and efficiency for future bus operations along the corridor, and for experienced bicyclists and large group bicycle rides (after all, the Grand Parkway will cut through prime pre-MS150 training territory)

Please help make the Grand Parkway a "Complete Street" for all users. Thank you.

We urge you to also send a hardcopy letter with your opinions to Mr. Peter Key, Deputy Director, Harris County Toll Road Authority, 330 Meadowfern Drive, Houston, TX  77067

The road system throughout Houston is excellent for vehicles but there really needs to be an in improvement for pedestrians and bicyclists. More and more people are using bipedal and bicycle locomotion to get around. With more people and bicyclists out and about the need is rising to have safe avenues for these people to go down. Please consider implementing changes to the road systems to accommodate everyone, not just cars and trucks. I ride a couple times a week and obey the traffic laws. Sometimes I don't ride because there is not a safe route. I would ride my bicycle more often, instead of driving my car, if there were more bike friendly roads in Harris County.

I use the tollroads daily and would like to see some of the tollroad proceeds help make cycling safer in Harris County.

Elaine Teoh, O.D., Harris County Even in a rapidly developing area as Houston, we need to plan ahead and build communities where people can walk, bicycle, or rollerblade for fun or work. I like to bicycle, but am afraid to get on most of the roads in the Cypress area due to heavy traffic and the lack of bicycle lanes. With curbs on all the streets, a cyclist cannot even get off the road when they do not feel safe with drivers who do not want to share the road. The toll road really needs to provide for cyclists and pedestrians too.

Yes, I use the Harris County Toll Road regularly.

This is the time to make a good project Great by taking into account and making the design improvements necessary to accomodate the needs of pedestrians, wheelchairs and bicyclists. It is time for Houston to show it can do at least as well as other cities in moving towards the Complete Street concept.

I use the Westpark Tollway and the Sam Houston tollway on a daily basis.

Safe Bike lanes or separate bike paths running along commuter routes are an asset to the community and provide an excellent alternative to cars. The best systems like this have connections to public transport such as bus, taxi, and or commuter rail. People enjoy having the opportunity to access bike roads and trails. They improve the quality of life, and provide environmentally an friendly alternative to cars, and also offer a safe place for recreation, travel and exercise. The new Cy Woods High School in Cypress was built without sidewalks, or safe paths. Every student must either take the bus or drive, event though they live within a mile of the school. I have seen several students walking in the road on Jarvis coming or leaving school. Cars were whizzing within touching distance. The danger was obvious. Lets not make this shortsighted mistake with the New Highways in Texas. Build bike lanes and see happy commuters and voters take advantage of the gas savings and health beneifts of cycling to work and play. It will be a super selling point for Greater Houston as it grows and develops.

I am a Harris County tool road user.

I am a Harris County Toll Road user and believe we need to have a complete transportation corridor along the proposed Grand Parkway. Texas, especially Harris County, have ignored all transportation users except automobiles for far too long. We are many years behind other countries, both developed and less prosperous ones!

7:06 pm PDT, Sep 1, Eric Schoen, Texas
Full name: Eric Jonathan Schoen; County of Residence: Harris For the past three years, I have designed and mapped rides for the Schlumberger Cycling Club (SCC), a group of 450 cycling enthusiasts who ride year round, with a special focus on the BP MS-150. From January to April each year, SCC organizes Saturday training rides that attract over 100 riders. We concentrate our training rides on the west side of Houston, and plan early season training rides to utilize flat and quiet roads in the coastal prairies of Fort Bend, Waller, and Harris counties. From June to September, our much smaller group of dedicated riders returns to these roads when summer's heat makes long rides in the hills of counties further west impractical. Above all, we design our ride routes for safety, avoiding high traffic areas and roads without sufficiently wide shoulders. We already seeing the impact that the southern section of Segment D of the Grand Parkway is having on cycling safety in Fort Bend County. As new residential communities and shoppping centers open along the parkway, roads that have for years supported an active weekend cycling community are being unsafe, and no alternatives remain save for driving further out of town. I strongly support this petition that asks to make the Grand Parkway accessible for all modes of transit--cars, buses, cyclists and pedestrians.

I am a frequent Harris County tollroad user... most frequently the WestPark Tollway as a means to access bicycle ride starting points in Fort Bend and Waller counties.

We have a daughter with epilepsy who cannot drive. It is ashame that we live in a rapidly developing area that takes no interest in providing sidewalks to get to around in the Cypress area! No only for people who can't drive, but for children and adults who just want to walk between neighborhoods for fun or exercise. I like to bicycle, but am afraid to get on most of the roads in the Cypress area, because of heavy traffic and no bicycle lanes. With curbs on all the streets, a cyclist cannot even get off the road when they to do not feel safe with drivers who do not want to share the road. With increasing fuel costs and crowded roads, making cycling/walkinG more appealing (and safe!)only makes sense. The toll road really need to provide for cyclists and pedestrians too -- not just a skinny lane of debris on the side of an exsisting road.

Yes, I use the Harris county toll roads.

# 82:

I live in Harris county but have visited many other countries including Mexico and various countries in Europe. Sadly, the US is the country where I feel least safe bicycling. I've seen better bicycle lanes in Mexico than here in Houston. Its time for us to step up, and the new Grand Parkway Tollroad is the place to start.

Occasionally - but we should be spending transit money maintaining CURRENT roads and developing alternative methods and new mass transit methods, instead of building additional lanes of gridlock!

# 81:

It is time to start thinking about bicycles as a form of alternative transportation. With facilities like this being planned into ALL major thoroughfares we can become less dependant on oil and gas. Think Long term/Act short term/Plan now

As a cyclist who was almost killed by being hit from behind by a pick up truck, we NEED safe places to ride to work and for fun, not only to improve our own physical fitness, but to improve the fitness of our World, by helping to eliminate car use. PLEASE provide cyclists, and all those who would become cyclists if they had a safe place to ride, with this wonderful bikeway. Thank you.

Mr. Key, I would love to have our roads as biker-friendly as they are in the Washington/Oregon area. We have to opportunity to be ahead of the game on this and future road construction. As fuel prices rise, more and more people will opt for bicycle transport. For the safety factor alone, include bikes in the design, please.

When I need to travel to areas served by the toll roads, yes.

# 58:
1:22 pm PDT, Aug 29, Nadia Barrera, Texas
Bicycles should be considered when building all roadways. With gas prices, congestion and air pollution levels as high as they are, there is no excuse for not promoting cycling with every project.

No. But, I would ride my bicycle on it.

All areas within and immediately outside of Houston need to become more biker-friendly. With all the changes in the economy many people may be forced to riding to work, and as such, need to feel safe. Agreed, bikers also need to respect the people, roads, establishments of Houston while riding or otherwise. If Austin and Dallas can do this, Houston certainly can. Thank you.

Yes.
