Bikes on buses

Target:
UK bus companies
Sponsored by:
We believe bus companies should, when there is sufficient space, allow passengers to carry their bicycle on board.
We believe this will encourage greater use of public transport and reduce car journeys, thereby cutting carbon emissions and helping the environment.

There are so few bike lanes in the North East cities so putting your bike on a bus in difficult areas is such a good idea as they can be used in the remainder of journeys.

Anything we can do to encourage more environmentally friendly travel habits has to be a good thing. A city like Strasbourg is a pleasure to walk around with such clear, clean air.... and so many people commute fom small villages into Strasbourg on trains which have loads of cycle racks, positively encouraging people to combine public transport with a bike.

I know a lot of cyclists in their 60s & 70s who would appreciate the chance to do journeys one way with the opportunity of return by bus

I DO FEEL IT IS UNREASONABLE NOT TO ALLOW A BIKE ON BOARD A BUS; AFTER ALL THERE ARE DEDICATED SPACES FOR WHEELCHAIRS. I'M SURE IF THE BIKE OWNER WERE WARNED THEY WOULD NEED TO LEAVE THE BUS IF IT BECAME TOO FULL THAT WOULD BE REASONABLE FROM THE OTHER SIDE. I SPENT SEVERAL YEARS USING BUSES BETWEEN DURHAM AND BISHOP AUCKLAND USING A FOLD UP BIKE AS A PERIPATETIC MUSIC TEACHER AND NEVER HAD ANY TROUBLE AND MIGHT SUGGEST YOU AVOID TROUBLE BY USING ONE

We need to do everything possible to make it easier to cut carbon emissions. I voted for having space for bikes on all European trains and it makes sense to let bikes on buses whenever there is room. Fiona Hall MEP

On a trip to Vancouver I noticed every bus in the city has a front mounted rack to carry 2 bikes. So simple.

In the USA many buses carry bike racks on the rear. Integrated transport requires all types of public transport to allow the use of others. Trains meeting planes, metros meeting buses and trains and buses caryying bikes!

This country is so far behind the rest of europe, in just about every continental country you can take your bike on a bus.

It's a disgrace that bikes are not allowed on buses. Bus companies are supposed to be providing a public service. This is a simple step which would have a major impact on car journeys.
