Do you want increased access for Bikes on BART?

Do you want increased access for Bikes on BART?

Target:
Bay Area Rapid Transit
We believe that bicycles are becoming a greater portion of public transportation participants, and as such, deserve increased access to public transportation.  As the price of gasoline raises, businessmen and soccer moms alike are leaving their automobiles in the garage in favor of a more cost-efficient, smog-reducing, and healthy mode of transportation.  Part of this transition includes bicycles and part of it includes public transportation - and we believe they can co-exist.

Increased overall community health and wellness, reduced pollution, and money savings could go a long way towards BART's own public image.    BART could follow, by example, international cities like Paris and Amsterdam, that leverage the bike commuting population's support to expand its system.  Even national cities like Portland and Pittsburgh are already following suit, with the idea of stimulating public support during environmental campaigns.  Children and adults alike would benefit from greater independence and access to new destinations within the Bay Area, benefiting the smaller businesses that make up the cultural communities that the Bay Area is known for.  BART stations would become strong hubs of these communities.

We ask BART to mark one car on every train as "bike-friendly":
  • accessible to all bikes (not simply folding ones),
  • accessible during all operating hours,
  • permitted in all stations.

Such a car could be modified to fit more bicycles, without obstructing paths of travel, and have standing sections for cyclists dismounting the train at their departure.

We believe BART can be part of the solution by increasing access for Bikes on BART.

a bike car would be the best thing that ever happened to me! i've been given the choice to wake up at the crack of dawn just so i can ride my bike from class to class around sf (im an aau student) or leave at a "normal" time and endure riding on the cramped and stuffy aau shuttles to get around! please make a bike friendly car!

I got rid of my car and got a bike to help the environment and reduce traffic, but I can't bring it on BART for my commute? The restrictions that BART puts on us bicyclists just discourages good practices.

If this results in actual increased cost, then the bicyclists should bear that cost. A separate bike gate could charge a different fare.

I personally use the BART for combined commuting, where I bring my bike too. This gives me amazing flexibility, there is almost nowhere I cannot go. Anything that improves or increases this access would be greatly appreciated!

BART would do well to think about the entire commute system. When someone takes BART, they have two ends to deal with, one is usually drive and the other walk. If bikes were allowed to be on the train, I am convinced you would see far more people bike to BART because they can get easily to their destinations rather then walking or other public transportatin. BART also needs to redesign their cars to promote better usage by bikers during peak hours, as well as during non-peak hours.

echo #588 (Jessica Watkins) who says we need a bike-friendly car on each train during rush hour. BART's killing itself by not allowing bike users on.

Being able to bring a bike on BART during the morning commute on SF-bound trains would make BART a more attractive commuting option.

I tried BARTing into the city for my job, but using my bike was incredibly difficult, especially in the afternoon/evening. It's impossible to get back on the train in the evening with a bike.

Allowances for bicycle commuters is compulsive for a mass transit system to be a "system". Unless BART will bring the track to my block, my family, my neighbors must drive (or skateboard) to the station. Limiting cyclists' access to trains is unresponsive to the economic and ecologic times.

If the goal of public transportation is to reduce the number of people traveling by car, isn't it counterintuitive to forbid a substantial portion of commuters from using trains at peak hours? These people aren't going to just leave their bikes at home. They're going to find another way to get to work or school - like a car.

I limit the trips I take on Bart because of the lack of space. I'd ride considerably more if it was easier.

This is a very important issue for a growing poplulation of bicycle commuters. Please take the time to review the petition and understand it's value to the Bay Area population.

If BART were at least as bike-friendly as Caltrain (which isn't all that bike-friendly), I would ride BART a great deal more. And I know many people for whom BART would be a viable commuting option if bikes were more reasonably accommodated, thereby eliminating the "last mile" obstacle. BART can never be expanded enough to reach most people, but it can virtually expand by making it easier for folks to bike to/from stations.

We all know the benefits from allowing bikes on BART. Are there really any significant down sides to doing so?

Rush hour limitations for bikes make it much harder for East Bay to San Fran commuters.

The problem during peak hours is that there could be plenty of room inside of the car, yet the majority of the people crowd the entryways to the cars, leaving no room for bicycles. This would be remedied with an adequately designed car designated for cyclists. Even during off-peak hours, it is frustrating for all passengers - not just bicyclists - to have multiple bicycles crammed in the small space near the doorways.

Please allow bikes on BART during commuting hours. I would ride my bike more and drive less.

I use BART on a daily basis to get to and from Oakland, and increasing bike access, especially during high-traffic hours, would go a long way to improving BART's bike friendliness. as it stands, i generally leave my bike behind in berkeley and hoof it for 10 blocks in Oakland.

A public transit system's compatibility with cycling is extremely important. People choose which city to make their home based on bicycle infrastructure and access.

I have been kicked off an empty train multiple times due to the regulated no-bike hours. It is very discouraging. Please try to make BART more bike friendly.

I have been so frustrated by the bike moratorium on BART at precisely the times I need to use the system. I live in Pleasanton, and work in Alameda. I want to ride the train to the Castro Valley station with my bike. I would then ride the bike to my office from there. At the end of the day, it would be the reverse. That very short (one stop) BART ride would save me ~1+ hour of biking time, ~15 miles, and two long hill climbs. But even though there are gobs of room on the train in the morning, as it's the end of the line after all, I can't take my bike until so late in the morning (8:30?) that I would be hours late for my work. This is bass-ackwards thinking, my dear BART. Some would call it idiotic. My solution? I drive my car every single day. That's not too green, is it? Loosen up the bike restrictions so we can all do our parts to get out of our cars and on to mass transit.

More people will use BART if bike access is increased. Limitations on bike access force people back to their cars!

This is a no brainer. If BART commits to being more accommodating to bicycles on the trains, more people would strongly consider biking instead of driving their cars, because they would know they could rely on being able to board a train with their bike. It's time to provide as many public transportation options as possible. BART should be a LEADER in this, just as ALL public transit services in the SF Bay Area should be leading on this issue. Just do it!

As a person with several friends and family members who use BART regularly, and as a Caltrain user myself, I think that increasing accessibility for bikers taking public transportation is really important to achieving a significant reduction in vehicle use. The increase in ridership that would surely follow would only benefit BART.
