For far too long New York City has lagged behind the rest of the country in providing quality animal care. The root of today’s problem is the city’s Animal Care & Control (AC&C), the largest animal shelter system in the Northeast. Even with the recent announcement of legislation that would provide $10 million in additional funds over three years, AC&C remains chronically under-funded, resulting in shameful conditions in many city shelters.
PAWS is an initiative of Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer to make New York City a national leader in the humane treatment of animals and to reform how the City manages and funds its animal welfare system.
