We, the undersigned, support Fr. Roy Bourgeois and all the courageous women and men who take a prophetic stand in support of women's ordination in the Roman Catholic Church.

In the face of inevitable excommunication, we urge the Maryknoll leadership to do everything within their power to support Fr. Bourgeois, just as Sr. Joan Chittister's order did when she publicly supported women's ordination in 2001.  We also urge the Vatican to listen to the voices of the Catholic faithful and the movement of the Holy Spirit by opening the discussion of women's ordination.

The penalty of excommunication threatened upon Fr.  Bourgeois - a Maryknoll priest who has dedicated his entire life to serve the Church - is a prime example of the misuse of church discipline as a way of dealing with differences. It will not intimidate those of us who dare to shatter the stained glass ceiling.

We applaud Fr. Bourgeois' dedication to social justice, including justice for women in the Church.  His conscience and his personal relationship with women called to priesthood compelled him to stand up for what he believes.  We echo his words, "I cannot possibly speak out about the injustice of the war in Iraq, about the injustice of the School of the Americas and the suffering it causes, and at the same time be silent about this injustice in my church. I belong to a huge faith community where women are excluded, and I have a responsibility to address this."

This inappropriate use of excommunication and the Vatican's stance on ordination are based on arguments that have been refuted time and again. In 1976, the Vatican's own Pontifical Biblical Commission determined that there is no scriptural reason to prohibit women's ordination. In our efforts to ordain women into an inclusive and accountable Church, we see it as contrary to the gospel itself to excommunicate people who are daring to break the silence in support of women's rightful role in the Church.

The refusal to ordain women is nothing more than an egregious manifestation of sexism in the church. It is time for the Vatican to listen to its own research, its own theologians and its own people who say that women are equally created in the image of God.  The Holy Spirit calls women, as well as men, to serve as priests in a renewed and inclusive Catholic Church.

Just as the church leader's called Joan of Arc's "call" unholy in her time, the church is again unwilling to believe that women could be responding to God's call to them. Change NEVER comes without struggle, and I pray for the brave women who answer the call, AND for the church leaders that they LISTEN to the Holy Spirit renewing our church.

What kind of organization is it that shields evil doers who abuse children sexually while it casts out faithful servants for supporting the equality of women?

The Vatican's stand on ordinating women is violating Christ's teaching, intellectually and spiritually impoverishing the church, and alienating millions of Church members. It's time to change your stance! Do not excommunicate your best, brightest and most committed.

As long as patriarchy exists in its governance and priesthood , the Roman Catholic Church will become increasingly irrelevant to many good people. Jesus excluded no one. I pray that Fr. Roy's stance will lead to much- needed open dialogue among all the People of God on this fundamental issue of justice for women in the Church. Mary Berwick ( member of Pax Christi USA)

This excommunication business in going to far. Since when does a faithful priest deserve excommunication because of a belief that will become reality as soon as Eucharist is deprived to enough Catholics who refuse to attend or contribute to a Church that denies them the sacraments because of its archaic commitment to ordaining only male clergy? Which is the greatest sin, I ask? To which belief would Jesus subscribe?...or Paul?

When will the Roman Church accept the teachings of Jesus that love, justice and equality are what matters, not canons aimed at reinforcing the power of the male hierarchy.

I have presided in my small faith community for over 10 years. I have been called to the RC priesthood for over 25 years. Fr. Roy, this man of great faith and filled with the Holy Spirit, is calling the male clergy and hierarchy to the truth of human existence: Genesis 1: 27 Humankind was created as God's reflection: in the divine image God created them; female and male, God made them. Women along with men are images of God within the human family. This does not stop at the church doors. Open up your hearts and minds as once Pope John XXIII opened the "windows of the Vatican" and acknowledge the reality of the Reign of God, daughters and sons of God are we all. Fr. Roy represents millions of Roman Catholic in his prophetic witness in telling "Truth to Power"

Support for the ordination of women should not be punishable by excommunication. There is no way that such a view can be termed "sinful" and deserving of such a radical action. Fr. Roy is a committed servant of the church, and his opinion on women priests, considered after much prayer and reflection, should be taken for what it is--an opposing viewpoint, no further from the gospel than the present church's stance.

We need good priests - men and women- to lead and minister to all of us and the generations to follow us. I believe that the Vatican is abusing it's power by refusing to look at the issue of women priests as well as excommunicating a good priest who has worked so long for peace and social justice. I call on priests, nuns and the my fellow Catholics to raise their voices in support of Fr. Roy and the ordination of women.

With Jesus for example, I stand in humble support of Father Bourgeois as he stands in support of women's ordination in the Roman Catholic Church. Jesus held firm to what He knew to be true and correct, no matter what the threat from the powers-that-be. On this earth, He was the living example of how to stick to your principles--to follow the word of God, and God alone, no matter what men might say or do.

As a female minister I consider it my religious duty to speak on behalf of all women clergy. Being female has never hindered, only added to my understanding of how to answer God's call to serve and lead. Denouncing women in the ministry is a great shame - we will lead whether or not you give us equal status as men. The church could not survive without us. God is calling us. Let us answer.

Our prayers and support are with Fr. Roy Bourgeois as he witnesses to the truth of tradition in the early Church which included women priests. In the first centuries of Christianity, there is historic evidence of the existence of ordained women deacons and women bishops, heads of household churches. In Rome in the catacombs of Pricilla, a fourth century fresco depicts several women in dalmatic robes, seated at a table offering the Eucharist, customary at burial services consoling bereaved families.

I stand in support of Fr. Ray Bourgeois stand on women being ordained in the Cathjolic priesthood and I stand behind his courageous vocalization of his tand in the face of the threat of excommunication. As a cradle Catholic raised in the strictest way, life has taught me in the depths of my soul that Jesus was anything but static. I believe that it is time that the Church accept the equality of women and allow us to serve God's people in a world starving for Christ's message of love. Fill the void with people willing and able to do this work. It is a practical need. FEAR NOT!

Thank God for those who are supporting this cause. In a time when we are in need for more priests - it is imperative to use the resources that God has named. We are certainly all greatful for your leadership in this effort.

It saddens me to know that an outstanding faithful Priest as Rev. Fr. Roy Bourgeois is facing Excomunication over his support for Women Priests. Our Catholic Church needs more voices like Father's Roy, not less. With all due repect, I cannot understand the Church's refusal to ordain women who, in their discernment with their God, feel called to priestly ordination. Excluding women from ordination is unjust and sinful. I live in the Boston area and have treated victims of clergy sexual abuse and their families, some of who have been so traumatized they have gone on to commit suicide. If Cardinal Law has not been excommunication due his complicity in this abuse, how can you, with any sense of justice, even consider excommunicating Rev. Bourgeois?

Fr. Bourgeois is acting fully in communion with the prophetic and social justice values and traditions of the most faithful grounding of the Church. We call on the institutional church to come back into communion with the Faithful Church and remember that means and ends must be consistent: we can never achieve justice and communion through injustice and exclusion, and temporal power hierarchies neither reflect nor represent God's eternal kindom. Humility and repentance are in order in the face of such exemplary lives, not reprimand and attempts to shame those who choose conscious actions that recognize and respond to the ways that the Spirit still moves, in uncontrolled and mysterious ways...
