Bring back the U.S. keyboard layout to Canada

Please share, post on facebook, twitter, email ... whatever.  Get the word out because I know a lot of people aren't even aware they've done this.

The standard keyboard layout that a generation on Canadians have grown up with is the U.S. keyboard layout.  It has a long SHIFT key on both the left and right side, and a long horizontal ENTER key on the right
side.

For whatever reason, this layout of keyboard is no longer available in Canada, with the exception of one or two manufacturers including Dell and Apple.

The new keyboard layout appears to have become the bilingual keyboard layout.  This keyboard layout shrinks the left SHIFT key and adds a new key to its right in between the SHIFT the z key.  It also alters the ENTER key and moves it farther right on the keyboard.

The problem is that Canadian users have learned to touch type with the standard U.S keyboard layout, and have developed the muscle memory to do so.  With the SHIFT and ENTER key moved, every line of text is affected.

When you go to capitalize a letter you end up hitting the >> key and then the letter you wanted to capitalize instead.  And when you go to hit enter, you end up hitting the > key instead.  You can imagine the frustration this causes for the millions of Canadians who have grown up with and developed the muscle memory for typing on the U.S. keyboard layout.

I have no issues with offering the option of a bilingual keyboard for the French speaking people of Canada.  I myself, speak French.  However, users who prefer the U.S. keyboard layout (which has been the standard in Canada since the very beginning) should also have the option of choosing the layout they prefer and are accustomed to.

I do not know whether this change in keyboard layout is due to the computer manufacturers or a result of some Canadian governmental blunder.  Computer manufacturers certainly have the ability to provide U.S. keyboard layouts, as they have done so for years, and continue to offer them all of the United States.  And the government of Canada, should be addressing this problem if they are not.

Whatever the reason, this needs to be address, and those of you who are infuriated by this change should have a forum to express their disdain for this change.  In that vein, I am creating this petition.  For anyone else who is annoyed by this change, or the ardent ones who now refuse to buy a computer in Canada unless they can buy the U.S. keyboard layout, I hope you'll sign this petition in the hopes of having this issue addressed.

Thank you.

We the undersigned are frustrated by the change in Canadian computer stores, and by Canadian computer manufacturers to not offer Canadians the ability to purchase computers with the U.S. keyboard layout.  Instead, the bilingual French keyboard layout seems to have become the only option available to consumers in Canada.  This affects the ability to touch-type of millions of Canadians and we request that you please bring back the U.S. keyboard layout to Canada.

And when you go to hit enter you end up hitting the > key instead.  For the millions of Canadians who have learned to touch-type with the U.S. keyboard you can understand how this would be extremely frustrating, especially for those whose jobs and/or lives revolve around writing on a computer.

I have no issues with offering the option of a bilingual keyboard for the French speaking people of Canada. I myself, speak French. However, users who prefer the U.S. keyboard layout (which has been the standard in Canada since the very beginning of computers) should also have the option of choosing the layout they prefer and are accustomed to.  If this change is a matter of public policy in instituting a Canadian standard, I would ask that the government review this decisions and take into account the frustration this causes to the millions of Canadians this change affects.  I can understand creating an all-inclusive keyboard standard for Canada but I believe the large majority of Canadians are used to the U.S keyboard layout.  Additionally, the keys that occupy the space on the Bilingual keyboard where the SHIFT and ENTER sit do not appear to be keys that are often used in typing, or at least not as often as the SHIFT and ENTER keys.  Moving those keys to a different position on the keyboard to create a universal standard would seem a much better solution in my opinion.  In any event, I still believe that Canadians should have the option of choosing the layout they prefer, instead of resorting to travelling to the United States to buy a computer with the layout they've used all theirs lives.

As I do not know whether this change in keyboard layout is due to the computer manufacturers or a result of some Canadian governmental order I ask that all parties involved in this change, or affected by this change, would raise awareness about this issue to bring about a public forum on the matter. Computer manufacturers certainly have the ability to provide U.S. keyboard layouts, as they have done so for years, and continue to offer them all of the United States. And the government of Canada, should be addressing this problem if they are not.

Whatever the reason, this needs to be address, and I call upon the Government of Canada and computer manufacturers to do what is needed to bring the U.S. keyboard layout back to Canada.  If not as the standard, at the very least, as an option to Canadian citizens who would much prefer it.

I hope you will do what you can to bring about a solution to this issue.  Thank you for your time in reading this letter and acknowledging our frustrations and corcerns.
