Bring Exemptions Back For Students of the HRSB

Bring Exemptions Back For Students of the HRSB

Target:
Students of the HRSB
Sponsored by:
On November 2, 2009, highschool students were notified by the HRSB that exemptions were being revoked from all students due to the current H1N1 pandemic. It was thought that so many people needed their exemptions that people would go to any length in order to keep a perfect attendance; even if that meant coming to school with H1N1 and putting the health of other students in danger.
The case of the matter is, who will go to class anymore now that exemptions have been taken from us? How many more people will be failing courses this year, with nothing to encourage us to maintain an exemplary attendance?

For all of you out there who know their graduation is counting on that one exemption these next two semesters, please sign this petition and encourage anyone and everyone you know to do the same.

We the students of the HRSB are not allowing our exemptions to be taken away from us for the year of 2009-2010. Are you graduating this year? Do you have big plans for your future? Is there a university awaiting your transcripts, which may not be up to their standards now that you have to write that Calculus, History or Second Langage exam?

Make exemptions based on grades

All they have to do is up the allowed amount of excused absents to say maybe 10 or so.

H1N1 is way overhyped. Get vaccinated if you want to get vaccinated, or don't bother like the majority of Canadians. I'm not going to bother getting vaccinated because believe it or not, H1N1 is just another flu with a very very low fatality rate, and most deaths are among people with previous health problems. Anyway, my point is that it is not a good idea to take away the exam exemption because of a media-fuelled panic that seems to be inhibiting people's abilities to think logically. Rewarding students who attend their classes (and most likely have high marks as a result) should not be affected by the H1N1 virus. How difficult is it to mark students who are absent with flu-like symptoms as "special circumstances" so they will still be able to earn their well-deserved break at exam time? That way, students who are sick will not come to school sick and students who work hard and attend class will still receive their exemptions at the end of semester. It's such a simple solution, and it should be implemented. Why hasn't it been implemented, then? The school board has been looking for an excuse to get rid of exemptions for years now. The extra bit of paperwork obviously isn't worth it to offer an incentive to students who actually want to learn. Basically, this petition is useless because the policy is now set in stone for the wrong reasons. I'm glad I'm no longer in high school!

High school students faithfully attended classes and strived for high marks because of exemptions. What incentive do they have now? Who decided all students will miss 7 days because of the H1N1 virus? And, if they are sick, did anyone do the math and realize, that in a 7 day stretch, when a student is out sick, 2 of those days are weekend days? 7 minus 2 used to equal 5 when I went to school. If a student gets H1N1 and misses 5 days and they aren't sick any other time during the term, they would have still qualified for exemptions. Now? Students have every reason to skip class! I know first hand; I'm the mom of a student attending Dartmouth High School. Bring exemptions back, please.

the sick people are still going to come as to not fall behind. the people who dont care now have no reason you attend class. you ruined it for everyone and no one benifits from your quick unthought decision. congrats

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=333511780256&v=feed&story_fbid=333521945256 I created a facebook group explaining the reasons why this action by the HRSB was unnecessary, and what else they could've done. I highly suggest you check it out.

Revoking exemptions will do students no good, we attend school and participate not to mention work hard for our exemptions, sick days should not be a matter of question towards exemptions. A common sickness has never stopped our school boards before from supporting our students.

If a student is sick with H1N1 they need to take up still getting an exemption with student servives - exemptions shouldn't be taken away for everyone because you're afraid that some students will get swine flu anyway. And if a student has swine flu, I doubt that they would be in any kind of shape to get up & go to school. Also, exam exemptions were really the only thing keeping a lot of students IN class & preventing them from skipping school. I find it hard to believe that the School Board is just going to overlook the fact that once you take away a students exemption, students are not going to be in class on time, or at all. The first thing everyone said was "I'm gonna skip all the time now" & then they'll still have to do the exam?!? They'll still be failing the class so & hope the School Board saw this one coming

Whatever happened to "Well, I had to walk three miles in the snow up to my ankles even if I was sick to get to school.." now, they're making it so that the students who have exemplary attendance are being made to be punished. It was their only reward.

When I found out about this I was actually home and not in school. And no, i wasnt sick with H1N1, it was due to something else. My jaw dropped when i heard about it, and it is so ridiculous. As a grade 12 student now in the halifax area, I believe that they shouldn't be allowed to just say "oh we can't do that anymore". There are so many other ways to work around this. ie. make the absences more before they can exempt an exam. They put these exam exemptions to encourage teens to stay in school, and not skip so they get something out of it in the first place.. There should be an exception to these kids with the H1N1.It is not their fault they have, so why do us kids have to suffer. It is just plain not fair. Now, i'm a smart kid, but not overally, i do get decent grades, have me strongest classes and then my weakest classes. This can lead to us kids not getting into university. It is ridiculous the way they are handling this.

A major reason students never skipped classes is becuase of exemptions, now that the exemptions are gone, 85% of students will start to skip , which also leads to failing subjects. The first thing I heard when told about exemptions is " im going to skip everyday now"

I feel that it is unfair to take away the exam exemptions because of the H1N1 virus. I think they should still exsist. If people are home sick with the virus, thats not their fault, they should not be punished for it too. If they call in or bring in a doctors note they should be excused under medical reasoning and everyone who isn't sick is still fair game for the exemptions.
# 3:
12:32 pm PST, Nov 3, Emily Kennedy, Canada
the people with the swine flu should either not get an exemption or have a special circumstance where it doesnt matter that they missed and get a doctors note, but its really unfair that the students who are fine dont get there exemption. ridiculous...
