Donkey Abuse in the Streets of Spain on Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras

Spain:  Stop Donkey Abuse in the name of Mardi Gras!

Target:
Animal Abuse
Every year, a small donkey is viciously abused in the streets of a village in Spain, all in the spirit of 'entertainment' and 'tradition':

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/02/29/ndonk29.xml&sSheet=/news
"The Pero Palo festival is meant to commemorate the capture of a rapist in Villanueva de la Vera many years ago, when he was paraded through the streets on a donkey before being executed.

During the festival, however, the donkey is subjected to a grotesque ritual that can leave it badly injured, lame or crushed to death. Alcohol is sometimes poured down its throat to enhance its performance.

The festival achieved notoriety in Britain in 1986 when a public outcry and media campaign led to the rescue of Blackie, the donkey that was to be used in the ritual that year. "Blackie was saved and taken to our sanctuary in Devon, but nothing has really changed," said Mr Svendsen.

"On Tuesday the donkey was pushed around for over an hour, and was slipping and sliding in the rain. It was clearly distressed but the crowd seemed to take pleasure in its suffering. They thought it was a huge joke.

"The man riding it was drunk and laughing like a madman. When the donkey collapsed through sheer exhaustion they would not let it stay down but dragged it back on to its feet."

At one point, the donkey keeled over on to its side, and the rider responded by biting the animal on its ear.

The donkey's ordeal lasted for an hour before it was bundled into a trailer and driven away to an unknown fate. "It is difficult to describe just how sickened and disappointed we all are," said Mr Svendsen.

His team of campaigners was concerned that its vet was refused permission to examine the animal. Mr Svendsen - who is in Spain setting up the country's first donkey sanctuary, near Malaga - had hoped that tougher animal welfare laws would bring an end to such cruelty."

"Each year a donkey is physically and psychologically abused in a festival in Villanueva de la Vera, in the Spanish province of Extremadura. During the "Pero Palo" Fiesta on Shrove Tuesday the animal is jostled and dragged through the village by a partially drunken crowd. He is exposed to gunshots near to his head and firecrackers, and due to the stress involved, the donkey sweats heavily and collapses a number of times."

"The festival of Pero Palo takes place in Villanueva de la Vera (Cáceres- Extremadura-Spain) every Shrove Tuesday. In this popular festival a poor and helpless donkey is taken through the streets of the village to be ridden by the drunkest rider and to be subjected to degrading and cruel treatment for more than an hour. The parliament of Junta de Extremadura passed a law (Ley 5/2002) for the Protection of Animals in the region of Extremadura which forbids the utilisation of animals in festivals and public shows when the animal receives cruel mistreatment.

However, every year the Junta de Extremadura approves the celebration of this unkind festival, forgetting what the law says.

El Refugio del Burrito and The Donkey Sanctuary have witnessed this festival since 1986. We thought that the passing of that law meant the end of the torture the donkey receives, but reality has proved that nothing has changed. "

We, the undersigned:

The world is watching the actions of the citizens of Spain - and is calling for Spaniards to honor themselves and the global community in the spirit of compassion and mercy.

Please cease and desist in the use of live animals or their images in the 'celebration' of the 'Pero Palo' Fiesta on Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras in the city of Villanueva de la Vera, in the Spanish province of Extremadura.   Though laws have been passed, they have not been enforced- and animal suffering continues at this festival.

This is simply unacceptable to the global community to which Villanueva de la Vera, Extremadura, and the country of Spain are indeed members.

We protest this abuse - this portrays your village, province, and country in an extremely poor way, and does not engender the world's respect for your culture, your intelligence,  or your way of life.

We cannot, in good conscience, support your country, province, and/or city so long as the use and abuse of these live animals continues.

We will boycott travel to Spain and refuse to purchase products from Spain until this situation is recognized and rectified.

Please ACTIVELY stop the abuse of live animals as associated with this festival.

Thank you for your proactive, effective actions with regard to this matter.

I will never visit your country and will tell all my family and friends and churches of all the animal abuse and cruelty in your country and that your Government does not enforce laws to protect innocent animals. What is wrong with the people there? This is a real shame and inhumane, embarassment of mankind.

EL pelo palo as this is called is a horrendous affair for the donkey, this year the donkey didnt even want to get out of the traieler and was lying down forced by men to get up, he was lame. Dragged round the streets by drunken people and he couldnt even take a step forward. as a riding instructor its awful to see this, as a greyhound protector here in Spain (galgo) its an on going affair to work towards a country with a national law against these sad cases of abuse. We cant do that without your support. Thanks 112carlotagalgos.blogspot.com were you will also see this video.

Donkey abuse is straight up wrong. There is no reason to abuse the poor little donkeys when all they do for humans is help. People who abuse those donkeys are mean and have no values. Even though donkeys are looked down upon in society, they are helpful and have just as much reason to be here as the people who abuse them.

I used to want to go to Spain. I thought it was my ideal vacation. But now that I know what goes on there, I'm not so sure it is. I still want to go, but my hopes and dreams of living there some day have been crushed.

I have been offered a group holiday in Spain but I have sworn that I will never set foot in that country until all animal cruelty ceases. I have also actively encouraged others in the group (55 in all) not to go to Spain.

I cannot accept a country that allows the torture, mutilation and murder of animals in the name of religion and entertainment. Not only will I not visit Spain but I will not buy any Spanish products either.

This just goes to show just how barbaric and uncivilized Spain really is. Monitor these festivals from now on to ensure there are no more animals being used for any reason in these festivals! Even animals act more civilized than the majority of humans!

spain is now in the future not the past. there is no reason to abuse animals , chain or teather without protection or water. The abuse to the smaller animals is horrific and we must stop it.

This is a disgusting act and should discontinue.Yes it may be 'tradition' but people need to stand back and think of how the animal must feel.STOP THIS!

This has affected my impression on your country and society in the way that I think you have no caring feelings towards animals. This may be 'tradition' to you but times have changed elsewhere in the world and we see it as disgraceful.I live in Scotland and it is tradition to wear a kilt, but nobody does this anymore because we have moved on and are thinking of the future. Please stop this and make the world a better place!

I want the world to know that all animals with a spinal cord share the exact same system in the brain that enable us to FEEL!! They FEEL what you or I would FEEL, - of fear, anxiety, pain and suffering all the way to love!! GIVE THEM PROTECTION AGAINST ABUSE!!

ABUSING AND EXPLOITING ANIMALS, PUTTING THEM THROUGH AN UNDISCRIBABLE AMOUNT OF SUFFERING IS NOT CULTURE IN THE 21ST CENTURY!!! - IT IS NOTHING LESS THAN ABUSE AND IT MAKES ME SICK TO MY BODY AND SOUL!!! Monica Drexler Psychologist - Sweden

Donkeys are very special animals and should be treated with kindness and respect.

Animal abuse says a lot about a culture, whether that be abuse of a bull, dog, rooster or a donkey. It should not be allowed in the EU.
