I had to hire someone to take care of my husband so I could work. My salary went to pay that person to take care of him his last days. Some compensation or tax wrtie off or something needs to be considered.

My husband has had 4 strokes. The last 3 being in the last year. Each of them has left him more and more disabled and unable to care for himself. Consequently, I had a great job with good benefits and my employer found a way to let me go due to the amount of time I had to miss work. I lost all my insurance coverage and my income. I understand how everyone feels and thinks regarding caring for a loved one. I agree with all the comments made that there must be some compensation and benefits provided to the caregiver but, WHO can we get this from? Our government gives more credence to foreign countries well being than it's own. God help us all!!

My father was injured by a drunk driver. He lost most use of both arms, lost his right leg, suffered a brain injury. He spent six months in a hospital, and has been in and out since. He is completely disabled and I had to leave my job since he requires around the clock care.

I am a caregiver for both my Grandmother and Mother. I live in my parents home. My Dad is 71 years old and is not able to retire because he needs to be able to have the insurance for himself and my mom. My Grandmother lives here with us also. Mom is 65 years old and Gran is 85 years old. My Dad depends on my help caring for them. I need to be able to take care of my own financial responsibilities. I need the government to provide reasonable compensation for the labor of love that I perform everyday. Without that compensation people like myself who dedicated their lives to caring for their families will become indigent and remain at or below poverty level.

Over a year ago I relocated my elderly mother from her home town to live with me due to her poor health. She has limited income and does not drive so when she needs to go the doctor or needs any medical attention I take an unpaid day off of work.

Exploitation of carers/caregivers seems to be the same the world over. We do a demanding job yet get to live as paupers thanks to governments that see us a 'financial assets' rather than as people who have done the most selfless thing imaginable. Carers should be paid for the important role they do and not expected to suffer in poverty. It's coming into winter here and we (carers) can't afford to heat our home because of the meagre benefits we recieve.

No one should have to choose between financial survival and the care of a loved one.

If we can provide support to all of these under-priviledged peoples in other countries, why can't we take care of our own?

I have been caring for my disabled Mother for over three years now, since my Father has passed away. In that time I have lost 2 full time jobs with full benefits and retirement. I now have no savings, I am only able to work a few days a month here and there. I have almost lost my home and am on the verge of bankruptcy.

I had to take a leave of absence from my job in another city. I take care of my 70 year old Mother who was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma December 2007. My leave of absence id up in December 2008 & I don't think I even qualify for it because I was not at my job for a year & my leave of absence has been longer that my time of employment. I have no insurance, I have no income,I get no tax breaks. I am fed & clothed by my senior parents & their income is S.S.. Us caregivers need help. How are we to survive? We go thru a lot of emotional & physical demands & we have no help at all.

Free Health care for us. If migrant workers & their families can get free health care why can't we? A monthly check to eat, clothing, gas and bills.

I was advised by H&R Block that I couldn't even file income tax, since I did not make enough money, after leaving my job to take care of my father. As a result I get no stimulus check, though I need it more than ever. I have been paying Income taxes for 22 years. His medications cost $800.00 per month despite Medicare & supplemental plans. I'm losing my life.

Individuals who stay at home to care for disabled or elderly, who require 24-hour care should have some supplement to their income. A division of Medicare or Medicaid, or some type of Waiver program like that which was set-up to address the AIDS epidemic may need to be considered for our Alzheimer's population, which is predicted to reach 14,000,000 Americans within the next 5 years. The effect on care-givers is substantial enough to warrant solutions now. 2 months behind on my mortgage.

I am primary caregiver for my husband who has ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease. Even with his SSDI, we have a hard time making ends meet. I cannot work as I am needed to care for him. He can't even scratch his nose let alone feed himself. It is very difficult to decide which gets paid first and how much food you can get each month. We as caregivers are working full time without pay or any type of compensation for a job that is basically 24/7. Yes, the person we are caring for is a loved one but, some form of compensation would be nice.

The life of a Caregiver is a thankless one. They are on duty 24/7,often with not Government support, or respite. This Act of Caring for their loved one often leaves Carer feeling, frustrated financially, socially isolated, depressed and in some instances suicidal, as they strive to provide care which is both loving, caring and appropriate for the Caree's needs. The very least that any Governement should do is to ensure that they don't have to live in dire poverty as well. How dehumanising! to be treated like garbage just for having the fortitude to step up to the plate. Carers save the Governments much by keeping their charges out of institutions such as hospitals, and thereby reducing the cost to the Taxpayer. Governments and society benefits from these "Angels " and yet denies them the right to take care of themselves as well by ensuring that at least their basic needs are sustained in a manner which shows the Community's Gratitude for the Service they willingly render. Please, rethink your callous policy of not Caring for the Carer!! If you don't care for the Carer, then they in turn will require caring possibly at Greater cost to the Community than if they had received support for their valuable contribution to Society. Do not continue to treat them like second class citizens. They are top rate people, providing one of the most difficult services to the community for little or no respect.!! Shame on you for not rewarding those whose contributions are unrecognised, but very much required. Good Governments at least attempt to care for it Citizens that means all people are entitled to a life of Dignity !! Show some Compassion and improve the environments and conditions that are not afforded to Carers. They are Human Too.!!!!

Some ideas that may be useful include ensuring that Carers are given entitlements such as a pension, pension benefits such as free access to medical assistance,a paid period of leave could be another solution to assist in the prevention of burnout which many Carers suffer from.Carer in Aus. have recently been receiving the recognition that they have sought for years. Yes its long overdue, and still in the pitifall in nature stage, but at least Carers & Govt in Australia are attempting to rectify a situation that should have been addressed decades ago. Hopefully, some of the above suggestions may ignite some compassionate Gvt in your "wonderful and Caring Nation" to get on with the job of making life a beneficial journey for all and not for only those who are fortunate to be able to provide for themselve.

I couldn't agree more! My father is completely disabled and my Mother has to be with him 24-7. They live on $1300 a month! They barely get by. My Mother can not leave my Dad to work.I help as much as I can. Unfortunately, I am also disabled and am fighting social security for my benefits. We would not even consider putting my Dad in a nursing home.To Rose Esquer,I hope you get some help soon.Take care of your mom.You have a special place in heaven.

the state of California has reduced the funding for caregivers to such a extent that I can no longer get help for my mother who has alzheimers. How can I work if I can not afford to pay for her care. Do I overload the nursing homes who can not look at her for more that 4 or 5 hours at a time? do I leave her lay in bed at home without even the basic care. We need help.

Please help our cargivers with a basic salary and health care to help our elderly. My Mom and Dad worked and supported and defended our country and now they are left alone with the very basic needs. Supplement the revenue they receive from the State, penalize the state for not supporting health care. Make them stop the over spending and balance a budget that includes help and not budget cuts for our elderly citizens.

Caregiving to those seriously ill and disabled requires unlimited assistance...and during 'business hours'...for those assisting it's a seriously financially compromising situation...

i think it is about time that caregivers were given the support they deserve. at the moment, they are being taken advantage of, because for most family members, looking after a loved one is not a choice, its a must. the government takes advantage of this and it is about time the law was changed. may i also add a small note and ask you to take a quick look at my own petition, and pass it on. thanks xx teenage cancer group xx MY PETITION - STOP THE ROYAL MARSDEN HOSPITAL NEGLIGENCE !

As a caregiver, I watched my father's life savings and mine go like dust in the wind when he got Alzheimer's disease; within 2 years, he had gone halfway through his retirement savings and what I spent on helping him, was 1/3 of mine. There is no help for caregivers and many people literally go broke trying to care for their family members. Please provide some compensation to caregivers so that when the patient can no longer pay for their own medications, caregivers can and will still be able to afford their own medications and necessities. Otherwise, life becomes hopeless.

I definitely agree that there should be some kind of compensation paid for people taking care of their loved ones at home. It is not only saving the government money because they would have to pay for the caregivers that would take care of them and would also have to have the facilites to put these people in. I agree that the caregivers should be paid some kind of compensation to take care of a loved one or anyone that has these needs.

I AM a family caregiver for my brother who's a Viet Nam Veteran. The government FINALLY gave him well deserved benefits. As his caregiver, I have needs: affordable health insurance OR give me the same VA medical benefits. Who takes care of the caregiver????

Monthly financial help and medical care for those caregivers who cannot work outside the home because of being a caregiver. Politicians should try it for 30 days on little or no money. Maybe then they'd stop giving themselves raises. The United States needs to take a look at "taking care of their own".
