Carlisle Airport UK - Public Inquiry

Target:
To get a public inquiry for the development of Carlisle Airport
Sponsored by:
Carlisle Airport - the planning application to develop the airport at Carlisle should be considered by a Public Inquiry on the following grounds
1. The Planning Authority (Carlisle City Council) owns the airport, therefore its impartiality is compromised.
2. The impact on the Environment
3. The impact on Hadrian's Wall which runs near the boundary of the airport. This is a World Heritage site.
4. The impact on an SSSI within the airport boundary.
5. Current discussions are not open to the public and any queries are met with 'stonewalling'.
6. A Public Inquiry would ensure 'fair play' for all and allow the electorate to air their views in an impartial forum.

Airports are about communication - they allow us to communicate with other parts of the country and the globe. It does not make sense, therefore, to think of constructing an airport without communicating with everyone concerned, including the people whose city and lives will be most affected by it.

There should be many public meetings to discuss this development so it's fair to everyone!

We live in a democracy and so the people should have some input into such important decisions.

Airport expansion and carbon dioxide emission reduction are totally incompatible. Climate change is the single most serious threat faced by human civilisation to date - it needs to be taken seriously - NOW!!!

To reduce carbon dioxide emissions we ought to be reducing our use of highly poluting aircraft and the facilities for encouraging their use IE by expanding airports. P.Raffle.

It is totally irresponsible to even consider expanding air travel with the climate change crisis facing the world.

We need to take the lead and set an example up here. We need to conserve oil, not increase the rate we are using it at.

The urgency with which we need to address climate change is becoming more apparent. Aviation is the fastest growing source of climate change gases. Most air travel is an unnecessary luxury. Further expansion of air travel must be halted and more sustainable transport alternatives must be promoted for the health of the global environment as well as the environment around the proposed site.

Let's expand cycle networks, the rail system, UK food land, but not flipping airports! Let's expand the forests, the public transport to the same forests, let's expand kid's play areas and parls and allotments. Not golf courses though. And most definitely not airports. Why does everything need to expand anyway?! What does EQUILIBRIUM mean? We're not here to be a kind of macro-cancer for the planet, we're caretakers. Now start taking care!

Future focus for travel should be on economical and environmatally sound land routes rather than air travel.

I am Chair of South Lakes Action on Climate Change and we are firmly against expanding the airport. Climate change is a grave threat and expanding airport capacity is not part of the solution.

The expansion of aviation is both damaging to the environment and unnecessary. Increased use of airports is being fueled by cheap flights and not by legitimate demand. Many of the journeys from such airports could be easily taken by train. All of us are subsidising this increase in air travel as their fuel is not subject to VAT. Noise levels both at the departing and arriving airports is a huge imposition on local residents. Aircraft emissions cause more damage to the atmosphere as they are ejected at altitude where they do most damage and are not recycled by natural vegetation.

Like William Wilberforce making a stand for the abolition of slavery against the vested interests of the day, Britain must make a stand against the destructive increase of aviation. So what if other countries pull ahead for a while? It just needs one country to show a strong and moral lead and set the standard, and public opinion will cause others to follow. Encourage the travelling public to use the train rather than further polluting the skies with carbon emissions and the people beneath with intolerable noise.

Increasing flights when we must urgently reduce greenhouse gas emissions is criminally irresponsible to future generations and the poorest people on this planet. There is no need for more short-haul flights when people can use trains.

Airport expansion has got to be stopped - now - before our planet is completely destroyed by big business. And to destroy such a beautiful area is madness. Residents' experience at Belfast City Airport has shown that airports will expand uncontrollably, no matter what planning agreements are put in place. Climate criminals - that's what airports are!

Airport expansion only serves to encourage more people to make journeys in a very unsustainable way. Rail travel within the UK is preferable. Even the Prime Minister is now saying we need a 80% cut in UK CO2 emissions by 2050. Building more airports, and constantly encouraging more people to fly, is not going to help.

Following letter published by the Cumbrian Times he Editor Cumberland News Carlisle Airport Dear Editor Call me cynical, but I can't help thinking we are being given a disingenuous sales pitch by Messrs Tinkler and Co about the proposed development of Carlisle Airport. A major concern of residents of the area is that the proposed plans will not be the end of the expansion. We all know that private enterprises like Stobbarts depend on growth to ensure their viability and keep their shareholders support. You can't tell me that once their foot is in the door there will not be plans to expand operations in the not too distant future. The recently announced £160 million merger by Stobbart adds weight to this argument as does the news that airfreight could be Stobbarts main business at the airport. If this were to happen Carlisle Airport could soon resemble the airport in the Midlands mentioned by your reader from Aspatria. Recent news coverage has highlighted the general dissatisfaction of many British people with life in the UK and the record numbers who are leaving to live elsewhere. A major reason for this has to be because our %u201Cgreen and pleasant land%u201D is fast disappearing as so called %u201Cprogress%u201D swallows it up. Our beautiful Irthing River Valley is thankfully still unsullied by major development. This is the reason more and more people are visiting us - to enjoy our peaceful, traditional countryside. Our area is just as precious in its own way as the Lake District and you would never consider having a busy airport there. Let's preserve our part of Cumbria by saying no to the airport expansion. Yours faithfully R and F Malone Newtown IRTHINGTON

There will be considerable adverse impact to the town of Brampton which will lie under the flight path of aircraft. The Airport has already lodged objections to building within Brampton. It is not acceptable that private company should be attempting to dictate community planning.

This is a big proposition in the current climate of climate change - only 2 years after extreme flooding in Carlise caused by 'freak' weather. We need more time to decide if this is right.

The airport facilities are explicitly targeted at sub-regional users, whose origins and destinations extend far beyond the boundaries of the local planning authority's area. This is partly substantiated by the name being given by the developer to the airport (Carlisle Lake District Airport).
