What is important to highlight with this particular issue is that, unlike other practices under the institutionalized violence umbrella which, for the most part, involve men subjugating and abusing women, FGM is done to very young girls by other women, usually by their mothers and other trusted female relatives and elders.

Our goal, as women, is to not judge other women, but to educate ourselves and bring awareness to our own words, beliefs and actions, to recognize the ways in which we contribute to or create situations that result in the subjugation of or harm to girls mentally, physically, or emotionally. Each of us as adult women, can take responsibility for our own awareness, growth and actions. From this place of courage, commitment and humility, we understand that we all have attributes and beliefs which we can change and, then work together to end WOMEN doing violence towards girls.
