  1. Unattended gill nets are a wasteful fishing method and should be attended all times to stop wasteful killing of non-targeted fish, bird and turtle species.
  2. Mandatory attendance would stop the waste due to the person fishing the net being right there and able to release the fish before it dies.
  3. We support commercial fishermen and their desire to make a living from the water and also support fishing methods that are unwasteful.

We the undersigned wish to address Gill Net rules in the coastal waters of North Carolina.  There is too much waste associated with untended gill nets.  We desire to do away with waste.  Short of actually ridding our waters of gill nets entirely, the best way to do this to have the nets tended 24 hours a day.  This will keep the shallow water nets from having a school of fish swim into it  and be wasted and unusable by the time the owner of the net returns, which happens every day.  We would also like it to be made a violation for nets to be set in such a way as to be a violation to be left on dry land when the tide recedes.  We do not wish for commercial fisherman to be out of business, merely for less wasteful practices to be used and for wasteful gill netting to be made less so.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

I can not imagine how people can be so selfish that they don't care if they are killing/torturing other beings, in their quest for what THEY need. Let's consider what our economy needs more! Give it a helping hand...attend to your nets and PLEASE fish RESPONSIBLY!

In a time where our natural resources are under so much scrutiny why does this continue to happen.

I support commercial fishing when using proper gear and methods. Unattended gill net fishing is not proper, since it is unselective and kills threatened and endangered species. Also, the amount of gill nets allowed must be reduced, as it obviously has led to Southern Flounder being overfished.

Get rid of these old ways that do so much dmage to the environment. People don't need to hunt and fish to eat. It's for sport. This isn't the 19th century. There are too many people and not enough resources to let this continue.

This gill netting is a travesty and I guarantee the NC Fish and Game knows it but are too scared to speak up about it.

The wasteful by catch is such a shame. Please change these rules to make sure the gill netters act more responsibly.

Off shore gill nets are not efficient and archaic.

This practice and the apparent condoning by local authorities is disgusting, and needs further review by a committee. Besides the unprofessional actions of some local fishermen, the bycatch is jeapordizing fisheries up and down the east coast, my own NJ included.

It works here in Florida, a net ban should work very well in NC. We have our growing numbers of Redfish and Snook to show for it. Take this out dated, environmentally abusive practice and put it out of business. Your economy will realize benefits from those that wish to visit and partake in the great fishing to be had without gill netting. David .J Loger

300 mile 'plus' round trip to coast to fish... Add 12 mile run (each way) w. boat to fishing spot....tax revenue to state for gas, food, lisc........get to fishing spot & it's 'covered up' w. gill nets.........what the hell??? How can we keep allowing this?????

North Carolina's marine fishery resource deserves more attention from state government and all non-target species taken in gill nets need better protection. Attended gill nets is a good first step. Some places and some times during the year require no gill nets.
