Chevy Cobalt Power Steering Issues

Target:
Chevy Cobalt Consumers
Sponsored by:

Since I bought my Chevy Cobalt in 2005, with only 7 miles on it, I have had nothing but problems with it.  The purpose of this petition is to find others in the same situation as myself.  I feel as a consumer with a logical frame of mind, that there are several issues that are wrong with the Chevy Cobalt that should have been recalled.  After searching the internet and reading dozens, if not hundreds of claims similar to mine, I realized that the issues with my car are not isolated incidents and that GM should be held accountable for their poorly constructed vehicle.  I am currently in the process of seeking legal aid to file a class action lawsuit again GM and will be using the information provided by this petition as evidence in my case.  Please sign this petition if you have had any of the following issues with your car; problems with your power steering going out, issues with your key locking in the ignition or unusually short lifespan of your paint job.  In addition to these complaints, please list the model and year of your Cobalt as well as the number of times these incidents have occurred and what the solutions were to fix them.

2005 Cobalt - Power steering spontaneously stops working. Resumes upon stopping and re-starting the vehicle. Dealer identified a bad electronic module on the steering column. Car was just out of warranty of course! Upon $900 "repair", the steering wheel would not return to the normal position. Dealer had to replace the rack in the steering assembly for another $500! What a rip off and a racket! This seems kike a common problem with Cobalts!! The dealer played dumb when I said how many complaints there were about this problem! Good luck getting anything out of Chvy these days!!

We purchased our 2006 Cobalt in March of 2007. We started have powersteering issues in July of 2008 with only like 75,000 miles on the car. Now, the powersteering is still messing up, the engine light is on, and the car shuts down in the middle of trafffic. You cannot press on the brakes too hard, or the car will shut off. When the car is put in reverse it shuts off, and you have to keep cranking it and pretty much revving the engine for it to stay cranked. It is a total messed. We almost got rear ended yesterday because the car shut down in traffic. How much longer will it be, before GM get the picture and fix our cars?

My name is Evangelina Ibarra I own a 2005 chevy cobalt wich has been having issues with power steering for a couple of months now. I had to pay 100.00 dlls just to get a diagnosis and learn that this issue occured to many other people. The estimate for my repair is $1,100.00, which I have not been able to pay because of all this economy crisis going on. So now I am stuck with a car I thought I could relie on and I am not able to use it.I am upset about this situation because this is an issue occurring to many people with chevy cobalts and the factory seems not to be doing anything about it. I hope something can be done before horrible accidents can happen or lifes can be lost.

MY POWER STEERING WENT OUT TODAY WHILE I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK IN SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA . I COULD NOT CONTROL THE CAR IF THE COAL TRUCKS WERE ON THE ROAD AS EVERY OTHER DAY I MAY NOT BE HERE. IT WAS BY THE GRACE OF GOD I MANAGED TO GAIN CONTROL. I TOOK THE CAR TO LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND THEY STATED THEY HAVE HAD NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS BUT UNFORTUNATELY THIS PROBLEM IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. DOES GM REALLY THINK WE WILL BUY ANOTHER CHEVROLET. AFTER THE NIGHTMARES WE HAVE ENDURED FROM OWNING A CHEVY COLBALT OR DO THEY EVEN CARE. NOW I SEE WHY AMERICANS BUY FOREIGN CARS. NEVER AGAIN WILL I BUY A CHEVROLET MADE IN THE USA OR NOT!!!!

I live in the ozarks right now and fear everyday that my steering will go out like it has when I'm winding around the ozark mountain hills. There are no sidewalls on any of these roads and it takes all my muscle and concentration to keep the car on the road. Mechanics can't find problem. Maybe a law suit will help them figure it out.

My 2006 Cobalt started having the power steering go out randomly in Oct 2008. Just after the warranty expired and is continuing to this day to have problems. However I went all winter without it happening mow the weather is getting warmer again it has started happening again along with the key getting stuck in the ignition.

2006 Pontiac Pursuit G5 GT - Steering column had to be replaced: power steering quit working once. Steering column rattling again, needs to be replaced, GM refuses to cover it (it's just outside warranty) Also: - Wheel bearing began to fail on highway - Control arm bushing/links failed (replaced, twice on one side) - Sway bar bushings bad All that under 80000km. GM apparently struggles to build a working car. I'm ashamed that I bought this piece of junk. GM is aware of this problem but refuses to give assurance that the vehicle is safe. They should recall the steering on all HHR's, Cobalts, and G5/Pursuits, before someone gets killed (if it hasn't happened already; see here: http://forum.freeadvice.com/dangerous-defective-products-17/over-300-reports-no-action-yet-456355.html#post2235682)

My 2005 Chevy Cobalt with only 50,000 miles has started to have power steering issues. It started by the Power Steering light coming on. After turning the car off for awhile it'll works for a bit. Then the problem just continues!

Bought my 2007 Cobalt on July of 2006. Only have 16000 miles on the car and started having problems. Needed a new paint job, complained in July of 2008, just now got it painted, Next was the power steering. Makes an awful noise. They replaced the steering coloum, four days ago. Took it on a fifty mile trip, now it makes a loud noise every time I turn to the right. It is going back again, soon the lemon law will take effect. I will fight this every step of the way!!!! Not going to kill my daughter or me in this car!!!

I have a 2006 Chevy Cobalt LT, and have had nothing but problems! It took the dealership 4months to fix my door chime that would continue to go off with out a key in the ingnition. They replaced it with a faulty ignition cylinder before they corrected the problem. I have had my front bushings changed @ 40,000 km and now I need my links replaced and of course the car is out of warranty. My keyless entry stopped working just after the warranty expired - still only 48,000km on the car now. They said it would take 2 hours of labour @ $100 an hour to try to fix the keyless entry which has lost contact with the computer and still couldn't gaurantee they would be able to fix it! Recently my power steering has gone on me twice, one time being right now and this is how I found the petition. Both times the problem seemed to go away after leaving the car off for a little while, and of course with the car now being out of warranty - Jan '09 I have not taken it in as I have been too pissed off about all the problems, especially since the main ones have started just after the warranty expired! After owning a new car and a used car, with the difference in price I will take my chances on the used car and not listen to GM whine over money while they continue to mass-produce cars that are obviously not meeting the everyday standards of the people that are paying too much money for these vehicles!

I have a 2005 Cobalt. The first problem I had was the key getting stuck in the ignition. It was fixed under warranty. The second problem was the car dying. It happened 4 or 5 times and everytime I was on the interstate, in an intersection or in a turn. Always in a dangerous situation. A local dealership re-programed the computer for me ( for free- thank goodness- warranty was gone). Third problem is the power steering. So far it has happened 4 times. I have read that it is around $1000 to fix it. There are a lot of problems with this little car....

2005 chevy cobalt power steering issues. As previously stated by many before me the power steering likes to come on and off whenever it chooses. There has been no recall and the company acts oblivious to the fact of the matter. I have spoken to a GM dealership and they have tried charging $860.00 for parts and labor.

I had my Cobalt for just 2 weeks when the power steering light came on and the power steering was gone. Yes it starts again after you stop and restart. but it happens every few miles. I'm not driving the car til it gets fixed. It scares me. Problem is, no one seems to know how to fix it.

I have a 2006 chevy cobalt, I just started having power steering problems, but before that i have to have a part replaced with my shifter. I can't wait to get rid of this car. There shouldn't be a problem like this with a car so new. Chevy should be ashamed.. I will never feel bad for buying foreign after this.

I bought new 2006 Cobalt 4-Door LT Sedan. Recently, at about 40,000 miles, the power steering keeps going out, sometimes right out of the driveway, sometimes seconds later, and sometimes in the middle of highway or street driving. I dare not let my wife drive it, because if the power steering goes out, she could be in danger as she tries to manhandle the steering. It's even more difficult steering than the old cars without power steering in the first place. This is a dangerous fault with this car, and I understand others have complained about it too. If my car crashes while the power steering is out, and there are injuries and damage, who is responsbile? The manufacturer, of ccourse. In my 50 years of driving, I've never had this kind of problem with a car that had power steering. Thank you. Robert Natiuk

My daughter just bought a 2006 chevy cobalt about a month and a half ago. I'm scared for her safety! for about the last four days she has called me saying her steering is out again! she paid cash for the car. Tomorrow we will trade it in!!! this is insane. She is 18.I cannot risk her safety just because it's a cute car....

2006 Chevy Cobalt Power Steering Failure, key getting stuck in ignition, noise in front end sounds like something loose which actually is the whole front body. Have not fixed anything yet car is sitting in driveway. The power steering went out driving on the interstate which almost caused an accident. Might be safer to drive it without power steering instead of taking a chance that it may go out again while driving.

I bought my daughter a 2005 cobalt for her graduation present. Have had a lot of problems with the steering shaft and column making a noise. She was driving yesterday and lost the power steering. This is a very dangerous situation to be in. My son owns a shop and says it needs a new steering module or motor, and is expensive. No wonder GM is about to close its doors, producing this kind of poor design and quality. After checking on line it seems thousands of people have had the same issue. This is the last American vehicle that I will purchase.

I have had the steerin column worked on and even replaced and on wed 5/6/07 was driving down interstate 80 with my 5 year old grandaughter and the power steering went out of my car. Classic chevy dealer in cb doesn't seem to want to check the steering column for a problem and refuse to rent me a car for more than one day!!!!!!!!!!!1

I was driving my "wonderful" 2005 Cobalt Right out of Bellemy Strickland body shop and no less than 15 miles... my cars systemcharge and powersteering have a complete malfunction. Again,,, not more than 15 miles and i havent drove this vehicle in over 4 months because im a student working a part-time job and i cant afford it. I understand why GM wont be here much longer anyways. Just keep what your doing... you wont have to fix it when your bankrupt.

I own a 2005 Cobalt and it has 67,000 miles. I had no warning and was just driving when my power steering went out. There should definately be a recall for this issue. I guess GM is waiting for a fatality. It's too bad when we buy American and don't get treated with loyalty.

I am sooo over my 2005 cobalt. I have had it for about four months and the power steering is driving me insane. There is no way in hell that i am paying that much money to fix a car that shouldnt need fixing. Like evryone else said, "does someone have to die in order for them to do something about this???"

I have a 2005 chevy cobalt that I have owned for less than 2 years. It has 54,000 miles on. My power steering just went on it. I was in a turning lane in the middle of a turn when the wheel locked up. I had to pull to the side of a busy main road to avoid crashing my car. I turned the car off and then back on to find that my power steering was back. I had to get a police officer to stop traffic so I could get my car out of the spot that I parked my car in. I drove it straight to the chevy dealer. The dealer told me he thought it was a short in a wire and that the problem may not reoccur. I picked up my car and drove less than 10 miles on the highway and my power steering went out 4 times. I turned around and called the dealer and told him that I would be bringing my car back in since I had a 2 and 1/2 hour drive home and my car was not safe to drive. I bought an extended warranty, which does not cover this since "it is something that rarely needs replaced in cars". I am still waiting on a call back from GM about this issue.

Since I purchased my 2006 Chevy Cobalt (used) in 2008, I too have had problems. Most of them were merely annoying and were successfully resolved, for the most part. However a series of power steering failures (in various driving situations) have caused me a great deal of concern for my safety and that of my family. It should be obvious that power steering failure during the driving of the car presents some grave and serious safety issues. What is GM waiting for in failing to issue a recall? SERIOUS INJURY! DEATHS! I too had problems with my key getting stuck in the ignition and also with wn inability to start the vehicle with the key in proper position. These have been resolved to my satisfaction to-date. I own a 2006 Cobalt LS with 66,000 miles on it and am quite afraid that serious injury or death is the likely outcome of these continued power steering failures. PLEASE TAKE ACTION NOW BEFORE THIS OCCURS. Thank you.

Just in the past week, my power steering went out and it's the same as all the other complaints i've read here online. the light comes on and i turn off the car and it's fine again, at least for the moment. it seems to do it more often when it is hot. we are also trying to file a lawsuit due to almost wrecking the first time it happened and now knowing that so many other people have had the same problems out of the power steering and GM has yet to solve these problems.

My dady bought my chevy cobalt with 4 miles on it (the ones he put on it test driving it). We have had nothing but problem after problem with it. The key would not turn off (yeah we had to unplug the battery cables every night for 2 months until they could figure out what was wrong with it). After the 2 months on the ignition switch, the air conditioner fills my passenger floor board with 2 ft of water. Yeah that took Chevrolet 3 months to figure out and fix. Now my head light is defective and holds water. My ignitian problem stil continuse to this day and we have had the car since 05 and we are still upside down in it by 2 grand and getting someone to trade it in is the hardest thing to do. DO NOT BUY A COBALT... OR A EQUINOX..

I have a 2006 Colbalt LS coupe and last year my key got stuck in the ignition and they had to replace the gear shift which that is not covered in the extend warranty offered by GMAC. And that problem has happened to my friend's 05 sedan 4 times. And then the other day, the words Power Steering showed up on my dash and my power steering went completely out. So I had to have it towed to the dealership and they said the steering column needs to be replaced which that is also not covered with my extend warranty. I will never own a Chevy Colbalt ever again. And I will never get the stupid warranty if it isn't going to cover anything.

I have a 2005 Cobalt. Had to replace section in steering column due to key getting stuck. Also have had to replace brakes three times . These were under warranty at the time. Now my power steering is going out and no warranty left. My turning signals due not turn off by themselves, have to remember to turn them off after a turn is made.Speakers fade in and out on their on, as if there is a shortage.

Same problems here with my steering wheel! It has happened several times, light turns on and it locks! I have an 06 Cobalt and they want to charge me over 900.00 to fix it! I recently had my gas tank replaced the mechanic could not explain how it started leaking he specifically told me it was Not wear and tear. Since my warranty has expired I had to pay over 600! I have a 2005 cobalt and my power steering fails randomly about once a month. It is getting more frequent. It has happened about 8 times. My key also gets locked in the ignition which can take 30 minuites to get it out. I have written in a complaint to GM but they have not responded. It has been about 2 months. This car is dangerous and GM needs to fix the problem! It is a nightmare to those whos warranty is up.

I have a 2005 Chevy Cobalt and have had nothing but problems. To start off with I had to cut the carpet out of the passenger side of the car due to flooding from the AC. My daughter nearly strangled from the seat belt in the back seat. It refused to loosen so that I could get it our from around her throat so I ended up having to cut it with a knife. Last night the instrument panel that shows all the guages went out and only work when they want to the power steering light come on but we do not loose the power steering the check engine light goes on and off the anti theft light comes on and off. My aunt has a 2005 cobalt and her key has gotten stuck in the colum which she had to hit some kind of button underneath the steering wheel to get it out. These cars are very dangerous and they are poorly manufactured. I have had to quit my job because I live to far from it and cannot get to work because this car sucks.

I have an 07 cobalt LS standard transmission, bought new off the lot. just over 40.000 mils now and steering ceased while going in to curve, Thank God not very fast when it happened. Dealer checked, nothing showed on diagnostic and looking through it throughly. NOTHING, called GM, they promised to call me back every week to follow up and see if it does it again and told me if it did to take it back emediatly, HELLOOO, what if I can't take it back, Duhhh. Called Traffic Safety Admin, they took my complaint and said to watch for paper work to sign and send back for the investigation. and said this might cause a recall. "I certainly hope so" If this doesn't get nothing done I am next contacting a news reporter that does investigations on things like this. please contact me if I can be of any assistance to you with this petition, something has to be done about this car.

I own a 2006 Cobalt with many problems. The key kept getting stuck in the ignition and was repaired twice. I've had a clunk on right turns for a year and a half. The power steering gear rack, sway bar bolt, and both front lower control arms have been replaced. The clunk is still there. The air bag light kept going on and they replaced the seat belt retractor assembly. The radio went out. The blower motor was replaced. All the lights would go out when the brights were on and we used the right turn signal. Last week when I started the car, it began shaking and making so much noise I couldn,t drive it. It was towed to the dealer and needed an ignition module. I haven't even had the car for three years. I bought it brand new. What a piece of junk!
