Choose The Choice Plan

The Choice Plan, which was designed to desegregate Pinellas County Schools and encourage more integrated classrooms, began in 2003. The Choice Plan allowed students to attend the school of their choice, despite how far it is away from their home. The plan was a booming success in which 68% of students chose schools outside of regular assignment. Parents and students became accustomed to being able to choose their school for reasons of special or magnet programs or personal career interest.

Now, Pinellas County Officials are devising a way to scrap this Choice Plan in 2007. They are planning to divide the district into eight "community sensitive" attendance areas for all schools. Within each attendance area, every school would be surrounded by a zone. Students would be required to attend the school which they live closest to. Officials claim this new plan to save more time and money.

However, with this new plan many students would be deprived of an enjoyable education. This would especially effect high school students who chose a high school of specified benefits.  Students choose certain schools in preparation for college and, ultimately, choice of profession. With the transition of students from their old choice school to their new zoned school, the movement would cause an abundance of people to be unhappy.

Though seeming unsuccessful, the Choice Plan has in fact multi-culturalized different neighborhood areas of Pinellas County. Some students living in under-privelaged neighborhoods had the opportunity to attend well-founded schools. In conclusion, we encourage you to input your thoughts on continuing the Pinellas County Schools Choice Plan in this complaint to the school board.
