New Again Coalition- Change Clothing Care Regulations

Target:
Federal Trade Commission
Sponsored by:

Project Laundry List, the Permacouture Institute, and Make Do & Mend will work in partnership to build a coalition of other organizations and individual signatories to a series of sign-on letters aimed at accomplishing certain goals of these three organizations related to the care of clothing and protection of the environment.

Our first letter is a push for manufacturers and importers to provide consumers with a label that encourages optimal green behavior in the cleaning and care of an article of clothing. This could be as simple as "cold water, hang dry" or more complex with specific conscious care instructions. We know that many manufacturers currently print the minimum requirements for garment care, not realizing the environmental consequences of these vague instructions.

About Project Laundry List

Project Laundry List is making air-drying laundry acceptable and desirable as a simple and effective way to save energy.

About Permacouture Institute

Permacouture Institute encourages regenerative design for fashion and textiles.

About Make Do & Mend

Make-Do-And-Mend.org is a crafty, green, informative and design website, trying to tackle the problems arising out of the commercial direction of the fashion industry.

We welcome your participation in this effort and hope that you will help us to expand our coalition.

Re: Environmental Changes to the Care Labeling Rule

We, the undersigned, ask the Federal Trade Commission to open a proceeding to change the Care Labeling Rule so that the consequences of these rules with regards to the environment and energy consumption can be properly considered.

We believe that each item regulated by the rule should carry a label that informs the consumer of the optimal clothing care instructions for minimal impact on the environment.

I wholly support this coalition who are fighting for global ethical fashion rights, which in turn addresses human rights, financial corruption and climate issues through making transparent the traffic of the textile and fashion trades.
