Religious extremism is, and has been for centuries, the cause of much suffering. Today the religious agenda is being used by politicians of all colours to further their objectives or to block progress on world peace, population control, education, the elimination of child poverty and in general, tolerance, respect, and understanding.
Although these are, it is acknowledged, world-wide threats, the situation in the United States, due to that country's pre-eminent position in world affairs, can only be described as alarming.
The present contest for the post of President is a case in point. Both aspirants pander to religious extremists, professing to believe in immaterial beings, the resurrection of the dead and virgin birth - to name but a few. The world looks on apparently powerless to stop its fate and that of the United States being decided in future by individuals whose minds are clouded by such beliefs.
Just recently for example, both candidates were shown on television in the company of self declared religious fanatic. This public association with political leaders is used to promulgate his beliefs, endowing them with credibility and to give illusory substance to his opinions. That such an event could not happen in any other developed country in the world must give us pause.
This petition then, calls for support to combat specific pernicious activities or prohibitions practised today in the United States which are a threat to all our futures. Specific objectives are, initially:
- to keep open the access to abortion for all women
- to eliminate religious practices of all kinds from schools
- to eliminate reference to religious belief in Government, public services and the Armed Forces.
- to promote access to contraception in the United States and world-wide
- to outlaw the teaching of Creationism
- to ban the provision of text books to educational establishments other that those approved by a secular body at national level.

Now we have the Governor of Alaska, a confessed creationist, as a possible future President of the United States! Join me in attempting to stop this madness. Remember, in today's world there is nowhere to hide from these fanatics.

Religious extremism encourages intolerance,a black and white way of thinking, and not loving one's neighbor if they are different-and this is not spiritual and encourages poor solutions to world problems.

A President's job is to take care of & protect American People and run our Government. Religion has nothing to do with that job. Get rid of the religious zealots -- they are as dangerous to our freedoms and the religious zealots in the Middle East. I am a Christian who believes in the Separation of Church and State. Religion just gets denegrated when caught up in politics. The two definitely do not, never have, and will not mix. Just look at the Religion-run countries in the world. Those countries give no rights to women (think how Bush is taking women's rights apart piece by piece); and the people live with strife of all kinds. That is not what we want for America. Right now, we have an American version of the Taliban running our government.

The ironic part is that most "believers" are hypocritical parasites - like George W. Bush!

To me, a woman who has lived in the States, as well as many Asian countries, who is British by birth. Finds it absolutely astounding that a country that is 'supposed' to be so free and democratic uses its religious beliefs at so many levels. Should politics and religion be so closely knitted? Its almost farcicle - until we start to analyse the current political situations on a global level.

I don't think you should bring religion into the media religion is a private matter of one's own choosing not to be enforced on others or used as a working tool religion is took as a joke then not to do with real beliefs. People should be the focus NOT religion

Yes, the media should be the people's business and represent the people's interests, all of the people of all religions, so no one religion should be dominating channels or any media. So too should the art form-religions and their perspectives that distort rather than enrich be removed from legislation or abortion laws, schools, and any public activity.
Religious proselytism and their perspectives of monotheism, or multiple deities is offensive and shows how primitive our cultures are. More than that, religions are egoism and fosters fascism. Hitler to Jones Town and the Catholic Inquisition to the Crusades are embarrassments and we should have learned by now to see religions as art forms not that gods are real.

I was raised where we were supposse to have a freedom to choose in this country. It is a sad day now and a great loss losing it! It is a crying shame so many have given their live trying to save what we now throw away without a second thought.
