An Urban Garden is an agricultural use on a small plot within a community where an individual, or group, grows and harvests food and/or non-food crops for consumption, donation, or sale for profit. Gardens may be divided into separate plots for cultivation by one or more individuals, or may be farmed collectively by members of the group. Urban Gardens may include common areas maintained and used by group members. Depending on the site of such gardens, conditional use permits would be necessary to establish greenhouses, and produce stand structures, as well as off the street parking areas. Urban Gardens help meet needs for local food production, community health, community education, garden related job training, environmental enhancement, preservation of green space, and community enjoyment.

I came from a town that has several gardens for the public. I feel it is essential for the positive growth of the community. I want my daughter to grow up with garden access like I did.

This is our hertiage people in the Ozarks have had small gardens that fed their families and brought in extra cash. The $1,000 is too stiff

I believe that an urban garden in Springfield, MO would help bring the community closer together, and be beneficial to anyone who gets involved. I would love to have a local farm to go buy produce at, knowing that it's healthier and environmentally friendly.

I honestly do not believe that the importance of local movements such as this can be overstated. There is a fundamental change begging to be made in the way Americans approach how we live our lives, and Urban Gardens are a huge step in the right direction.

I am excited that there is an opportunity to show my children the value of living green as opposed to just talking about it. The best part - it's local and supports the community on various levels.

Not only is this great for your micro-economy (your family and neighborhood), it's truly a way of getting our community back - of working together and getting to know each other again and creating a sense of ownership and pride. You can help yourselves and teach/help others.

I support this initiative to allow urban gardens in Springfield because I believe it is important to encourage local food production. This will benefit our community in many ways--nutrition, environment, aesthetics, economic just to name a few.

It's already more than just an idea - Lots of people are growing community gardens within urban areas, even in mega-cities like NYC - It would be great to have several of our city-owned vacant lots converted into cooperatively farmed 'Victory Gardens' -

We need a local food source. Springfield holds the capability to feed its residents. We don't want to go hungry.
