Washington County is home to over 445,000 people, coming from all walks of life. The County should uphold the Oregon tradition of environmental leadership, by becoming a Cool County.

Make Washington County a Cool County

Target:
Washington County Board of Commissioners
The US Cool Counties Initiative was launched in July, 2007, by King County, WA, Fairfax County, VA, and the Sierra Club.  All counties that pass a resolution supporting the Cool Counties Climate Stabilization Declaration will commit to reducing their emissions of global warming pollutants to 80% below current levels by the year 2050, most likely cutting emissions by 2% every year until that time.  County boards that pass the Declaration also call on the US federal government to take strong action against global warming, and increase fuel economy standards for vehicles.  The Cool Washington County Campaign seeks to make Washington County, Oregon, one of the first Cool Counties on the west coast.  The Washington County Board of Commissioners should pass the Cool Counties Climate Stabilization Declaration, committing the county government to working against global warming, and becoming a leader in environmental protection.  Signers of this petition urge the Board to do so.

We, the undersigned, urge Washington County to pass the Cool Counties Climate Stabilization Declaration, committing to work toward a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 80% below current levels by the year 2050.  The Cool Counties Initiative, launched in July, 2007, marks the beginning of a groundbreaking movement designed to get county governments more involved in the fight against global warming.  Member counties pledge to work with appropriate government entities to achieve the above reduction in emissions of the gases that cause global warming.  A cut to 80% below current levels by 2050 is the amount by which scientists say the entire country needs to reduce greenhouse emissions, in order to stave off the effects of human-induced climate change.  We believe it would be in keeping with Oregon's finest traditions for Washington County to become involved in this movement.  Please make Washington County a Cool County, and pledge to protect the environment that we all depend on.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter.  We look forward to hearing your response.

It is very important for Washington County to set an example by starting this Cool County Initiative. Change for the better is always good and can't be ignored. We should learn from our past to better not only ourselves but our community that we also live in.

Yes I am a Washington Resident.

I am a fifth generation Native Oregonian. My people arrived in Washington County, Oregon before Oregon was admitted as a state (1859). I have the distinction of being recognized by the Washington County (Oregon)Genealogy Society as being a direct descendant of Robert Oregon Stevenson and Harvey W. Scott, two early settlers in Washington County, Oregon. I am very proud of my heritage and it is important to me that my county is considered clean, green and amazing.

Absolutely! I was born in Portland, Oregon - but raised in Beaverton (which I lovingly call Beavergulch), Washington County, Oregon. PS: Trees are "farmed" in Oregon as a "crop" - please educate yourselves on best practice forestry management. There are specific species of trees that are farmed as "pulp" (paper) and others for lumber. I.e., Douglas Fir needs to come up in a stand - therefore, clear cutting is necessary - replanting is a law in Oregon, as is habitat restoration.

I urge you to pass the Cool Counties Climate Stabilization Declaration. Washington County can act as a leader in this area, helping to improve and maintain our quality of life, and attract clean and green energy jobs for a brighter future.

I grew up in Washington County, and although no longer a resident, still feel connected in many ways to the county. We all need to be active in the battle to fight global warming and climate change by cutting carbon emissions. We also need to show our young people (children especially) that we care about their future. Joining the cool counties campaign is a way of doing that.

No, but I have cousins living in Washington County.
