Just one of many suffering animals we rescue daily in Corfu, Greece.

C.A.R.E. THIS PETITION WILL BE SUBMITTED TO THE GOVERNOR OF THE ISLAND OF CORFU AND THE AGRICULTURAL

Target:
Stop animal cruelty throughout Greece and obtain Goverment funding
This poor dog is just one of thousands we have rescued in Corfu, Greece.  CARE has no Government funding and in fact closed our shelter 3 years ago due to complaints from locals who accused us of sending rescue dogs abroad for experimental purposes as they are too ashamed to admit they do nothing to help yet are happy to see their streets clear during the tourist season.  We have re homed over 3000 animals, mostly in Germany and each an every one has found a loving home - see some of these stories on our website http://www.carecorfu.com/.  The tourist industry is Greeces  main source of income but tourists are becoming increasingly aware that there is a huge problem with animal welfare and CARE is on the road 7 days a week, 24 hours a day if necessary responding to endless calls from mostly tourists who have witnessed terrible cruelty or abuse and ask us for our help. What many tourists do not realise is that at the end of the season a mass cull using poison is administered to all strays who take days to die in utter agony.  We offer a neutering and spaying programme but many Greeks do not approve as they say this is cruel yet they are happy to have several litters every year and then think nothing of throwing the new born puppies or kittens into the sea or in the nearest dustbin.  Our charity is non profitable and only employs one person on their pay role so any money you send goes directly into saving these poor animals and finding them a new start in life - its the least they deserve so please help in any way you can to make a huge difference.  If you can't help finacially, please e mail anyone who has any contacts in the Greek Government or the press who could help to spread the word.  This petition will be submitted to the Governor of the Island of Corfu and the Agricultural Minister once we have reached our target of signatures.
Thank you

I also have a FB site http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/group.php?gid=38749219814 with over 15,800 signatures and thousands of comments from people that have visited Greece and have vowed never to return because of the horrible animal abuse. They state over and over that they spent their entire vacation taking care of the abused animals because unlike some/most of the Greek people, they could NOT walk away - could NOT ignore the abused animals. They took the animals to the vets, they bought food and medicine, they spent their money on caring for the animals and not on their vacation. They vowed never to return to a country that was so abusive to their beautiful animals. When will Greek start educating their people that animals are to be treasured, they are our gifts - they are used world-wide to save people, to find lost children, to lead the blind, to assist the disabled, the police use them to protect the citizens, they are used for so many wonderful life-saving situations and they are members of our family. Dogs will give their lives to protect us, they ask nothing but care and love in return. Wake up Greece - take care of your animals or lose your tourists forever!

I am an avid animal lover, particularly dogs. Two years ago I came to Corfu and met some wonderful people who were trying to help all the strays on the island. I am sadddend to see that the locals attitude has not changed and beg you to help these poor starving and sick animals. Helena Powell

I think it is DISGUSTING that you could even consider treating animals in such a way. it makes me cry thinking about it, but knowing I haven't got the means to do much about it. I know its more expensive to treat and care for the animals and neuter them etc, but its well worth the cost. These poor little animals are living creatures who feel pain from hunger poison, neglect and beating etc.. how on earth would you feel if it was you. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT NOOOOWW! your sick in the head.

I live in Corfu, Greece. Unfortunately, the poisoning of animals is not limited to stray dogs. On Sunday morning April 12, 2009 we found two of our dogs dead on our property in Agios Ioannis, Corfu. Next to them we found bread with poisoned meat inside. Ironically, both dogs (one was a puppy of a stray dog, the other one we found wandering the streets of Agios Ioannis looking for food next to rubbish containers) had been adopted by us (Dutch-Greek family) to give them a better life..... Probably, these dogs were killed because they were barking when someone approached. They had to be shut up forever in order not to disturb the peace of the tourists in the nearby rental villas. Last year at Easter we lost another dog. The people of Corfu, who are proud of their traditions and civilization, must change this tradition of murder, abuse, neglect and indifference!

Please educate the Greek people to look after their animals. The cruelty and neglect I witnessed in Corfu was unforgivable and prevents tourists from returning.

I lived in Greece 5 years (Athens) and can confirm the cruelty against street animals ... rescued many of them myself and they are all living with me now in Switzerland (great dogs!)- unfortunately animal help is all done there by foreigners and no help from goverment side .. some income from tourism should be spent there, other than just poisoning street dogs to clean up the beaches before the tourist season!!

You, as administrators of the island of Corfu, have the obligation as human beings to take care of your people AND of your animals. I don't think that people will choose Corfu as a vacation destination if they know the truth about the animal cruelty on your island.
